Iowa corn progress still ahead of normal

Iowa planting-Spirit Lake 5-13Despite some weather challenges this spring, the pace of corn planting and emergence in Iowa continues to run a few days ahead of normal.

As of Sunday, corn planting was 96 percent complete, six days ahead of the five-year average, while corn emergence, at 75 percent, was four days ahead of normal.  The first corn condition rating of the season puts the crop at 73 percent good to excellent and 23 percent fair.

Soybean planting stands at 74 percent complete and soybean emergence is 21 percent, equal to the five-year average.

The first cutting of alfalfa advanced to 19 percent complete and hay conditions improved slightly to 75 percent good to excellent.  Pasture condition also improved to 76 percent good to excellent.
