Midday cash livestock markets

Cattle country is off to a slow start on Friday, with just a few scattered bids of 119.00 in parts of Kansas, and 190.00 to 192.00 dressed in Nebraska, but that should change in the next several hours. Asking prices are around 126.00 to 127.00 in the South, and 198.00 to 200.00 in the North.

Boxed beef cutout values are lower in the morning report. Choice beef 203.66, down .76, select .59 lower at 194.91.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Mitchell, SD Livestock Auction totaled 3528 head on Thursday. Compared to last week, feeder steers sold with a firmer undertone in narrow comparison to the previous week’s light test. The best test for feeder heifers was in the 700 to 900 pound range at steady prices with a firm undertone, noted. Demand was moderate to good on an active market. Feeder steers medium and large 1 averaging 723 pounds brought 154.37 per hundredweight. 740 pound heifers traded at 140.28.

Midwest Exchange Regional Stockyards at Mexico, MO had 305 sheep in the run on Thursday. The demand was moderate to good on a moderate supply. Slaughter lambs, choice and a few prime 2-4 weighing 80 to 105 pounds brought 175.00 to 185.00 per hundredweight. 25 to 40 pound feeder lambs traded from 200.00 to 220.00 per hundredweight. There were 137 goats in the sale. Slaughter kids selection 1, a few weighing 45 to 60 pounds brought 292.50 to 305.00 per hundredweight.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota, Western and Eastern direct trade are not reported due to confidentiality. Nationally the hog market is down 1.12 at 69.87 weighted average on a carcass basis. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 59.00 to 65.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis are steady to 2.00 higher from 43.00 to 60.00 in a light test.

The pork carcass value is down 4.39 at 78.73 FOB plant. Bellies are down 23.81.

This week’s hog kill is estimated to be around 2.18 million head area, 3% more than last year. Actual slaughter is running above the implications of the March 1 Hogs & Pigs inventory.
