Indiana Senator takes on-farm experience back to Washington

Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly spent Thursday morning with Indiana farmer and Indiana Farm Bureau president Randy Kron learning more about the technology used in today’s agriculture.

Donnelly says the hands on learning experience helps him shape policy in Washington, DC.  “They (farmers) know so much more than those back in Washington as to the actual affect of policies on what happens on our farms,” he says.  “At the ag committee meetings coming up and with so many of the issues coming up – I wanted to make sure I brought back the wisdom of everybody back home to be part of that discussion.”

Vanderburgh County farmer Randy Kron says their intentions were to plant corn but Mother Nature had a different idea.

He tells Brownfield it was a good example for the Senator that often times conditions on the farm are beyond the farmer’s control.  “We haven’t turned a wheel in 10 days – so that’s a concern,” he says.  “We were talking about corn and soybeans and when we start to change over to more beans and less corn.  We want him to understand the economics along with the things that are outside of our control in agriculture.”

Donnelly says one of the greatest benefits of spending time on the farm is the ability to go back to Washington, DC and share the message of agriculture with other members of Congress.
