Typically a team that drafts 31st Overall has lost the Super Bowl the season before. Such was not the case in 2013 when the Dallas Cowboys drafted Wisconsin’s Travis Frederick.

Draft pundits chastised the Cowboys for taking Frederick at the time. Supposed experts claimed that he was worth no more than a third round selection and that the Cowboys were out of their minds for utilizing such a valuable resource on him.

You see, there was a reason why the Cowboys wanted to take Frederick in the first round… because they’re smart businessmen.

Thanks to the new (although it’s already kind of old) Collective Bargaining Agreement rookies who are drafted in the first round have a four-year contract with a potential fifth-year option. This is a topic that I touched on during this last week’s episode of the RJOShow if you want more clarification, but it’s relevant today for a very special reason.

The Dallas Cowboys Have Picked Up Travis Frederick’s 5th Year Option

Travis Frederick has defied everyone outside of the Dallas Cowboys Front Office since the moment that he strapped on his Star-studded helmet. He has become the center, no pun intended, for the Best Offensive Line in the NFL (which features a prominent supporting cast in Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, and La’el Collins). And now he’s a Dallas Cowboy through 2017.

Cowboys Headlines - Dallas Cowboys Pick Up C Travis Frederick's 5th Year Option 1

Fredbeard, as he is affectionately known to Cowboys Nation, has accomplished quite a lot in just three seasons in the NFL. He has never missed a game, while starting every one of them, and he has been to back-to-back Pro Bowls while receiving Second Team All-Pro Selections in back-to-back seasons as well.

Since the assembly of this elite unit we’ve all known that it was going to be very interesting to see how the Cowboys handled the finances of their elite Offensive Line. They already have Tyron Smith locked up long-term, this is the next step in that process. Next year they will likely pick up Zack Martin’s 5th Year Option as they work on a long-term deal for Frederick and then a long-term deal for Martin will follow.

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3! Congratulations to Travis Frederick for having his 5th Year Option picked up!
