Rains lingers in parts of the northern, eastern Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, rain lingers across northern and eastern sections of the region, maintaining a slow pace of fieldwork in the wake of last week’s rapid advance in corn planting. From 1995-2016, the years that at least 30% of the intended U.S. corn acreage had been planted by April 24 were 2010 (46%), 2012 (35%), 2004 (35%), 2005 (30%), and 2016 (30%). Meanwhile, dry weather has returned to the southwestern Corn Belt, following Wednesday’s heavy rain and locally severe thunderstorms.

On the Plains, cool weather prevails, except in Texas. Dry weather between storms favors a limited return to fieldwork on the central and southern Plains, while rain and snow showers linger across the northern Plains.

In the South, warm, dry weather across much of the region favors fieldwork and crop development. However, heavy rain is falling near the central Gulf Coast, while showers dot the southern Atlantic States.

In the West, a new storm system developing over the Great Basin and the Four Corners region is producing scattered rain and snow showers. Cool, dry, occasionally breezy weather covers the remainder of the West.
