Michigan fresh market vegetables increase in value
Michigan vegetable farmers made more money on fresh vegetables in 2015. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the farm level price increased 21 percent from the year before to almost $210 million. Production declined one percent to 8 million hundredweight.
U.S. production of a selected 24 fresh market vegetables and melons dropped two percent to 400 million hundredweight. The value increased 11 percent to nearly $12 billion. USDA says the three largest crops, accounting for 36 percent of production, included onions, head lettuce and watermelons.
U.S. processing production for eight selected vegetables increased one percent, while value declined three percent. Tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans totaled 93 percent of crops processed.
