Mardi Gras is coming!  It’s a little earlier then normal this year because Easter is so early.   Like many people I’ve started to plan my Mardi Gras with bright beads, Cajun food, and lots of drinks.

Let’s talk about Mardi Gras.   Why do people celebrate it?   When I asked a couple people most of them said it was a big party and time to eat and drink everything they could.  This is partially correct.

What is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras, which translates to “Fat Tuesday” in French, refers to the carnival and celebration  before Lent. It is a festive and colorful event observed in many countries, with the most notable celebrations in New Orleans in the United States, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and Venice in Italy.  Mardi Gras typically involves parades, masquerades, music, dancing, and the consumption of rich and fatty foods. The celebration is known for its vibrant and elaborate costumes, masks, and floats.

King Cake Cocktail combines all the delicious flavors of the classic King Cake for Mardi Gras

While I don’t often do much for Mardi Gras I usually make something to eat or drink to celebrate the occasion.   I do give up something for Lent every year so I normally make something that I’ll be giving up as well as something in the traditional green, gold, and purple colors of the day.

The last few years I’ve made Tri-Colored Mardi Gras Fudge, Mardi Gras Monkey Bread, and King Cake Cupcakes.   I’ve even tried my hand at making the traditional King Cake.   Since King Cake is such a big tradition I decided to turn it into a delicious cake and cinnamon flavored King Cake Cocktail!

What is King Cake?

A king cake is a traditional cake associated with the celebration of Mardi Gras and Carnival. The cake is named after the three wise men or “kings” who visited baby Jesus.  Typically king cake is a sweet, braided yeast dough ring, often decorated with colorful icing or sugar in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green, and gold. A small plastic baby figure is often hidden in the cake.   The person who finds the baby in their slice is considered to have good luck or is responsible for providing the next king cake.

Ingredients:

  • whipped cream vodka (make sure you use this flavor, don’t substitute it!)
  • orange liqueur (I tend to use Grand Marnier but you can use any orange liqueur)
  • Godiva chocolate liqueur (or anything that is similar)
  • half and half (don’t use regular milk, it won’t mix well)
  • cinnamon
  • green, gold, and purple sprinkles

To make the cocktail fill a large shaker with ice.   Add in the vodka, orange liqueur, chocolate liqueur, and half and half.  Shake well for 30 seconds.

Wet the lip of a martini glass with a wedge of lemon or a bit of honey and dip the rim of the glass into all three colors of sprinkles.

Strain the cocktail into the glass.  Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve immediately.

This cocktail tastes like cinnamon cake and it was so pretty with green, gold, and purple sugar on the rim.  It’s the perfect Mardi Gras cocktail to start the season of Lent.
