Vilsack will not designate cottonseed as oilseed

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the USDA does not have the legal authority to designate cottonseed as an oilseed, a significant blow to U.S. cotton farmers.

Vilsack told reporters during the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) meeting that Congress will need to step in to make cottonseed eligible for farm program benefits.

House Agriculture Committee Chairman Michael Conaway disagrees, saying the Secretary DOES have the authority.

The American Farm Bureau says cottonseed should be granted the designation and short of re-opening the Farm Bill, the Farm Bureau will be looking for ways to maneuver around the legal barriers.
