If you're looking for some creative ways to make Thanksgiving meaningful as a family, here are 10 creative and fun ways to count your blessings. #WomenLivingWell #thanksgiving #parentingtips #givingthanks

It’s almost time to celebrate Thanksgiving which means it’s time to count our blessings!

Psalm 9:1 says:

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

Here’s 10 Creative Ways to Count Your Blessings As a Family.

1. Make a Turkey.
We make a turkey body out of construction paper. Then give each person in the family a construction paper feather and have them write on it some things they are thankful for. Then stick all the feathers on for all to see and rejoice!

2. Make a Blessing Tree.
Draw a huge Blessing Tree.  Then create leaves and give one leaf to each person in the family.  Have them write one thing they are thankful for this year.  Then go around the table and as you share them, stick the leaves on the tree for all to see!

3. Create a Thanksgiving Family Journal
We have a “Thanksgiving Journal”. Each family member writes a paragraph in the journal of things we were thankful for every year.  I keep it in my bin with my Thanksgiving decorations.  Every year it is so fun to read about the kid’s favorite toys, friends, teachers and trips from previous years! I know that in 20 years, this journal will be priceless!

4. Make a collage of pictures.
Have the kids go around and take pictures of things they are thankful for. Then print the pictures and make a big collage out of the pictures.

5. Share why you are thankful for each person around the table.
Focus on each person.  Have everyone go around the table and say one thing they are thankful for in that one person.  Then focus on the next person and go around the table saying something encouraging about this person.  Continue all the way around the table blessing each other!

6. List 100 Blessings as a family.
Get out a piece of paper and see if you can list 100 blessings.  Brainstorm together and have fun thinking of 100 blessings!

7. Start a Gratitude Jar
Give each person multiple slips of paper.  Have them reflect over their year and write out good things that happened this past year.  Perhaps an accomplishment, new friend, funny moment, or a good gift. Then save the jar and open one a day and give thanks to God for those moments all through the Christmas season.

8.  Create a Thank You card to send to someone.
Consider who your family would like to say thank you to.  Then together, create a beautiful thank you card and let each person write something special in the card.

9.  Reflect on verses of thanksgiving from the Bible.
Here’s a place to start:  Psalm 9:1, Psalm 69:30, Psalm 1o0:4, Jeremiah 33:11, Philippians 4:6, Revelations 7:12

10. Have an open time of a prayer and Thanksgiving to God.Bow your heads together and allow each person to pray out loud and give thanks to God for something they are thankful for.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families!

Walk with the King,

Courtney

How is this different from other WLW journals?

1.). This journal is 7 days a week rather than just 5 days a week.

2.) This journal does not use the SOAK method.  It includes a verse for the day, a thought for the day,  a reflection question for the day and space to write your daily prayers.

3.) I will not be leading this as a Bible Study on-line.  But you can do it with friends and use the daily reflection question as a discussion question.

Jesus was born on a silent night.

He is: “Immanuel – God with us.” ~Matthew 1:23

This is the real meaning of Christmas.  Keep walking with the King of Kings!

    1. Yes! It’s so fun to begin traditions while they are young. Some years it is hard to carry through with all of the traditions we have created but I believe that the repetitive cycle year in and year out – builds security into a child’s soul.

      Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Natasha,

  1. Thank-you Courtney for these wonderful family ideas, I am a mother of 3 adult children and grandmother of 4 and I am definitely doing this to make our thanksgiving a memorable, and fun time. May you be Blessed and have a great Thanksgiving Day.

  2. Dear Courtney
I came across women living well/GMG by chance I cried because I found women who shared a desire to get closer to God in good times and bad. I have enjoyed and benefited from the bible study and the teaching. At the moment God is leading me into new territory and there are times when I am worn out But God has promised to never leave me, and when I go to Him I will find rest and refreshment. Thanksgiving is part of battle strategy, so having a month to concentrate on being Thankful is timely for me. I am in Bristol England and I have passed on the encouragement I have received. So I am thankful for a God who is Faithful and True. x Diane

    1. Dear Diane,

I just love how God can bring us so close together despite being oceans apart. I’m so glad you are here!!! Keep on going and stay strong!

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  3. A Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Courtney! This year we’ve taken time at dinner for each person to list five things they are grateful for on that particular day. Our six year old really enjoys it and our two year old too!

    1. JoLynn,

I love how intentional you are being with teaching your children to give thanks! That’s great!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your little ones!

  4. We cook at the homeless shelter in our area and have our Friday Family Feast on Friday! I am going to paint the Tree and give leaves to the homeless to put on the tree, I love this idea! May the Lord continual to bless your calling!
I think this will encourage them that they indeed have something to be thankful for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Last year, we did a thanksgiving tree, but we used cutouts of leaves with scripture that spoke of thanksgiving from Ann Voskamp’s website. There was a devotional that went with it.
On my husband’s side of the family (we get together with them every other year), we go around the table before prayer and say one thing we’re thankful for.
