Self assessment tool for conservation efforts

There is an online tool that helps Minnesota farmers do a self-evaluation of conservation efforts.

Jeremy Geske is a watershed education specialist involved with the Green Star Farms initiative. He works with farmers interested in improving conservation practices.

“Pretty much every farm I’ve been on…yeah they’re doing a great job, but they know they’ve got some things that could be improved.  It’s designed to be confidential.  Just a real non-threatening way of ramping up conservation a little bit.”

He tells Brownfield the Green Star program takes into account every aspect of conservation.

“From soil management to erosion control to waterways; even stuff around the farm site.  Are they protected from diesel or septic spills or are they recycling?  Just anything you can think of that would relate to conservation on the farm and in the household.”

The free online assessment asks 33 conservation-related questions and Geske says the website provides links with additional information.

  • Hello Mark,

Thanks for sharing this wonderful post. There are many advantages of erosion control. Some are long-term, other are short-term.

    Thanks.
