Cooler weather covers the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, cool, dry, breezy weather prevails in the wake of a cold front’s passage. Clouds linger in parts of the Great Lakes region. In recent weeks, Midwestern weather conditions have been nearly ideal for corn and soybean maturation and harvesting.

On the Plains, pockets of dryness remain a concern with respect to winter wheat emergence and establishment, especially from western and southern Nebraska southward into parts of Texas. Currently, mild, dry, breezy weather covers most of the nation’s mid-section.

In the South, widely scattered showers stretch from the Carolinas to the western Gulf Coast. From eastern Texas to central Mississippi, exceedingly dry conditions that have developed during the last 3 to 4 months have curtailed pasture growth and are hampering the emergence of fall-sown crops.

In the West, very warm, dry weather favors fieldwork—including summer crop harvesting and winter wheat planting—in advance of an approaching storm system.
