Cowboy Symposium poetry winners named

Members of PTK judging poetry contest

The Cowboy Symposium Poetry Contest winners from White Mountain Elementary School were announced Thursday. The Grand Prize Winner was Katie Arellanes for her poem “In the West.” The reserve winner was Cohen Gilliland.

Fourth-, fifth-graders competed this year with members of ENMU-Ruidoso’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society judging the contest.

The fourth-grade winners from Natalie Smith’s class were: First place to Annabelle Sanchez for her “Cowboy Poem,” second place to Alexa Martinez for  “Cowboys and Wagon Wheels” and third place to Alexia McLennan for “Up Before Dawn.”

The fifth-grade winners came from several classes. In Charie Flower’s class, Abby French won for “The Scary Tumbleweed,” Bobbie Sloan came in second with “The Puppy Like Tumbleweed” and Andrea Martinez for "Tumbleweeds and Wagon Wheels.” In James Cantu’s class, Roman Parra came in first for his untitled poem, Alora Shaver came in second and Bradly Belcher came in third with “The Lone Wagon.”

Cohen Gilliland came in first with “Wagon Wheels and Tumble weeds,” Melody Summers came in second with “Wagon Wheels and Tumbleweeds,” and Skyler Stegall came in third with “The Rusty Wagon Wheel.” These students are all in Rita Jarvis’ class.

In  Maxine Anchondo’s class, Gabriel Veleta’s “Tumble Weed” came in first, Gabriel Moreno came in second with “The Tumble Weeds,” and Andrea Marmolejo’s “Its fall” came in third.

Evelyn Bravo’s “Wagon Wheels” won, while Sonia Bravo Figueroa received second place for “Tumble Weed and Wagon Wheel” and  Agela Ruby Quirarte’s poem “La Carreta Y La Planta Rodadora” came in third. These students are in Ricardo Contreras’s class.

In Jessica Trujillo’s class, Cooper Pritchett won with “Tumbleweed Snowmen,” Lisbeth Ramirez placed second with “A Friendly Tumble Weed” and Savannah Mendez’s”Too young, but too Old” placed third.

Finally, Katie Arellanes won with “In The West” and  Maddison Rue  came in second with “A New Start.” Arellanes and Rue are in Marsha Short’s fifth-grade class.
