Mild to warm, dry period to continue

For the next couple of days, warm, dry weather will aid flood recovery efforts in the Southeast. However, showers will briefly return to the Carolinas during the weekend, with less than an inch of rain expected in most areas. The same cold front responsible for the Southeastern showers will also produce generally light, late-week rainfall from the Midwest into the Northeast. Meanwhile, a slow-moving storm emerging from the Southwest could result in additional rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches from the southern Rockies into the Rio Grande Valley. Mostly dry weather will cover the remainder of the U.S., except for periods of heavy precipitation (locally 2 to 6 inches or more) in the Pacific Northwest. By early next week, warmth will expand to cover most of the country.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for above-normal temperatures nationwide, with the greatest likelihood of warm weather in the western U.S. Meanwhile, near- to below-normal precipitation across much of the country will contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions in the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest, and northern New England.
