Microsoft has finally unveiled its flagship lineup in the form of Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL, and well they look exactly like the leaked images. This time around Microsoft just like any other smartphone manufacturers are sticking to a small and a large screen variant of the Lumia 950 XL device, and this is indeed a nice thing to do.
The Lumia 950 is fitted with a 5.2-inch display and the larger sibling 950 XL comes with a larger 5.7-inch display, both the displays offer a pixel density of up to 544ppi. The Organic OLED display comes with an improvised glance screen which lets user take a look at the important notifications right on their screen without waking up the device and the best part is the claim that this feature consumes Zero battery life. Adaptive antenna technology blends signal from two antennas, so no matter how you are holding the phone connectivity remains unperturbed.
Lumia has been sticking to the cardinal rule of providing a well balanced imaging experience and this time around it’s no different. Not only has Microsoft incorporated a 20-Megapixel primary sensor for the new Lumias, but have also put in an extra RGB natural flash bringing the total number of flash to three, while most of the other phones settle for two. The added flash will facilitate better artificial lighting and most importantly it will balance the tone and the warmth of the pictures more efficiently.
Lumia have been known for their low light capabilities, and now Microsoft has added a realtime red eye reduction feature which will cancel out the red eye without the need to post process the photographs. Plus Microsoft has pushed the envelope and opted for the fifth generation optical image stabilization and of course the signature hardware camera button, which is by the way, still the best way to capture a shot. The secondary camera comes in the form of a 5-Megapixel wide angled sensor.
Microsoft says that both the phones come with a 32GB internal storage and an microSD card that can squeeze in a whopping 200GB more, it will now also start authenticating users via the Windows Hello feature added to which is an IR camera which will help users to login into their phones by just glancing at it.
The Lumia 950 and the 950XL both come with some mind blowing hardware which includes a liquid cooling system that will ensure that your phone is not “too hot to handle”, considering the fact that the Lumia would be powered by the Snapdragon 810 SoC this cooling thingy might be very useful after all. Both the Lumias not only come with a different sized display but they are also powered by different SoC, the Lumia 950 will be powered by a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 while the 950XL will be powered by Snapdragon 810, however both the devices will be fitted with a 3GB of RAM. additionally, Microsoft has put in a USB Type-C connector which can charge the Lumia by 50 percent within 30 minutes. On the connectivity front the Lumia’s feature 4G LTE and also support the Microsoft Display Dock which will help users to connect the Lumia to other Windows devices.
Before we start judging the new flagships we should remind overself about Microsoft’s game plan with the Windows 10, threading in all Windows devices into one thus creating a strongly bound ecosystem, just like how Apple started doing years ago. The Continuum feature will turn the phone into a full fledged PC and also allow support for a Bluetooth mouse and a keyboard, additionally the phone can also be wirelessly connected to the monitor. Now this is what we call a real productive touch by Microsoft, this feature can very well be a single driving force for a niche of people to opt for a Lumia or any other Microsoft device.
