Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! Has everyone had a fantastic week? I hope so! Ours has been good. We’ve been plugging away at school. Josh and Megan are getting really good at planning their own weeks in their student planners and taking ownership of their schedules. Josh still complains about having to schedule his own lessons – he prefers for me to print out an assignment sheet – but the complaints are getting fewer and farther between. I think he likes having more control over his own schedule; he just doesn’t like having to sit and write it out.

Since most of the kids’ friends are back in school and swimming is over for the year, I’ve started to add in our electives. Our first addition was ASL Done Right. We are loving it! Even Josh hasn’t complained about practicing. Not that he’s a complainer, but I wasn’t sure he’d be as enthused about it as the girls. (Yes, my homeschool graduate is working her way through it, too.)

the orange demon

He can be so bad that I have to take pictures of him when he’s being sweet so that I don’t forget.

Wednesday was something a bit different – Josh’s first in-car driving lesson with the driving school we’re using (in hopes of getting a nice discount on his insurance). He said it was a little different driving with someone other than Brian, but he enjoyed it and got some good feedback. He’s got two more driving appointments, with the last one anticipated as interstate driving, which is scary, but necessary.

Yesterday I got to go have lunch with a dear friend – a much-needed treat. There’s nothing quite like an hour or two with a trusted friend to encourage you and brighten your day.

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to excite me. I ordered myself some goodies this week: new steak knives and some new markers (that I already love) for my Bible journal. Does anyone else get excited about stuff like that?

the good one

She’s the good one – usually.

If you haven’t seen it elsewhere, I wanted to be sure to point out an article from Mercy House founder, Kristen Welch. The School Girl Project highlights a common problem preventing girls in Kenya from attending school and a super-simple way you can help. You don’t even have to leave your house if you don’t want to. A few clicks on Amazon was all it took for me. Please check it out and help if you can.

By the way, have you heard of Amazon Smile? You can choose a charity and when you shop eligible products on Amazon, they’ll donate a portion of your purchase to your charity. Mercy House is one of the charities you can choose. Just sayin’.

I only had one post at About.com this week, but it’s a fun one! 5 Easy Ways to Incorporate Hands-On Learning Activities. Head over and pick up some tips!

And, finally, in the “wow that is so super creepy, but also kind of cool” department, Charlotte caught a lizard in her web yesterday! I only saw it after. Brian saw it fall in and watched her attack it and wrap it up. Eerily fascinating.

Now that you’re properly creeped out and/or fascinated, I hope you all have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend! (Someone please tell me I’m not the only one who can’t wrap my mind around the fact that it’s September already.)

  1. I LOVE your spider picture (not sure if that is slightly macabre) 🙂
Your kitty pictures made me smile. My gorgeous boy, Georgie, has just been diagnosed with cancer in his abdomen and is swelling up like a balloon. As soon as he is in any discomfort our vet will put him down (he seems happy and normal bar the huge swelling). It will break my heart – we have had him our entire marriage (18 years) and I can’t imagine a life without him in it. Of all our myriad of animals he is mummy’s boy and I am devastated. He spends all the time he can on my lap and i am making the most of every moment. Not at all sure how I am going to cope…. 🙁

    1. Oh, Claire. I’m so sorry. I cried like a baby when Gus the First disappeared and I try not to think of how old my rotten dog, Peanut, is getting. I won’t fare well when his time comes. (((Hugs)))

  2. Sorry if I posted this twice… my computer malfunctioned and shut down during my last attempt…. I was commenting to say how glad I was not to be the only mom that gets excited about markers. I bought myself a set as well as a color counts coloring book when I realized one day that I really missed coloring. It’s fun but my kids thought I was a little weird to get excited about new markers.

  3. I do use Amazon Smile; I was so excited when I realized I could do that. Very cool. Still can’t decide how I feel about the lizard in the spider web, though. Piper caught a little mole yesterday! I thought it was dead but it was still breathing and I think just in shock because I put it in a nice little Piper-free grassy area of the yard and it was gone shortly after. And probably has crazy stories to tell his mole friends. 🙂

    1. Yeah, I rescue various and sundry creatures from the outside cats and dogs – including lizards. It was way too late for this one by the time I saw it. I’m not sure I’d have fought Charlotte for him anyway, though. She’s super-creepy. I always say as long as I can see her we’re good. If she ever gets on me, it’s all over.

  4. My oldest is enjoying learning ASL this year. She really wants to be able to use it in some sort of ministry to the hearing impaired.

Your excitement over the markers made me smile. I do get excited about things like that. This week I just bought myself a new box of Prismacolor colored pencils, and I’ve been thrilled. 🙂
