A word of caution from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Entities with an EIN other than a personal social security number who are current and potential Federal Government grant and contract recipients must obtain a DUNS (D & B) number and register with the U.S. System for Award Management. (SAM). Obtaining a DUNS number and registering in SAM is absolutely free.

Recently grant recipients and contractors have been approached and in some cases, paid significant fees for assistance in registering. These are private, third party businesses which do not represent the federal government but have paid search engines to appear ahead of government websites.

One quick way to determine if it is a website belongs to a private company is all government websites end with “gov” or “mil”.
