Second generation biotech potato gets approval
Potato farmers may soon have access to a late blight resistance biotech variety. USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service gave the Russet Burbank potato, developed by the J.R. Simplot Co., “determination of nonregulated status” on Friday. The innate variety is a second generation potato that can be stored in colder temperatures to reduce food waste, has reduced bruising, and lower levels of a naturally produced chemical that may be carcinogenic when cooked at high temperatures. Approval for variety is still pending from the FDA and EPA. McDonald’s, one of the company’s oldest buyers, has rejected the first generation variety and Simplot is turning to the fresh market and grocery stores for market potential.
