USDA expands whole-farm revenue insurance

FarmersMarketoftheOzarks_ProduceThe USDA says whole-farm revenue insurance is now available for specialty crop farmers and ranchers with diversified operations.

Deputy Ag Secretary Krysta Harden says they met with producers and made some positive changes in the pilot program. She tells Brownfield those include coverage for replanting annual commodities, less paperwork and fewer fees, among other things.

Harden says, “It also removes a previous cap that limited participants to those who received 35-percent or less of their income from livestock production.”

The program started as a pilot in the 2014 Farm Bill but now extends to all growers who qualify. The coverage is for producers with diversified crops “including beginning, organic, and fruit and vegetable growers.” The policy covers farms or ranches with up to $8-and-a-Half million in insured revenue.
