Stinkbugs becoming an issue in the Midwest

stinkbugThere’s a new insect threatening soybean quality and yields in the Midwest.

Phil Krieg, an agronomy service representative for Syngenta in Southern Illinois, says an increasing number of stinkbugs are moving in.

“I would really stress that everyone keep an eye on those soybeans, start taking a look, what is that population we have out there and then put a control measure in place, plenty early before we lose yield and grain quality,” Krieg said.

He says it’s recommended that growers contact their local crop protection company representative or university specialist to determine the economic threshold for their area.

Krieg recommends scouting up until pods reach maturity because there is still plenty of time for them to do damage.
