Perth Mint Introduces 2016 1-Ounce Silver Kangaroo Bullion Coin

The Perth Mint has unveiled a new Australian Silver Kangaroo bullion coin, due for release in 2016. This marks the first time the kangaroo has appeared on one of the mint’s silver bullion coins, having previously only appeared on gold bullion pieces.

The 1 oz. Silver Kangaroo is the first Australian coin to be struck in silver of 99.99% purity. Its reverse features an image of a hopping kangaroo at its center, with textured rays of sunlight emanating outward in all directions. The words AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO curve along the edge of the coin, along with the coin’s “1 oz 9999 SILVER” composition, its 2016 year of issue, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark. The coin’s obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s familiar effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and its 1 DOLLAR (AUD) denomination.

Based on the continuing popularity of their bullion program, as well as the current high demand for silver coins around the world, the Perth Mint sees the Silver Kangaroo as a strong issue that will generate a lot of interest. Perth Mint Acting General Manger of Marketing, Neil Vance, said of the upcoming release, “We are confident that the Silver Kangaroo will help us double our market share in the United States, Europe, and globally, as it is issued with an unlimited mintage and is only available for purchase in large quantities.”

A press release notes that the 2016 Silver Kangaroo will be released with its counterpart, the Gold Kangaroo bullion coin, this September. For more information, visit the Web page for the Perth Mint’s bullion program. For buyers in the U.S., the coin can be purchased through GovMint here.

Yay super excited about a Kangaroo that isn’t HR. Will fit in my album with the other 1 oz silvers from around the world 🙂

So, I know the Perth mint has issued silver 1 oz Kangaroo coins since 1993, although I have never seen one., and I *believe* they were of limited quantity, only .999 fine, and all proofs – please correct me if I am wrong as I am not expert..

Is the 2016 1 oz Silver Australian Kangaroo a NEW issue that will be one of:
    – unlimited mint supply to meet demand
    – minted every year

Thus, competition to the U.S. Mint, Royal Canadian Mint?

You know, Australia’s version of the American Silver Eagle or Canadian Maple Leaf or Austrian Philharmonic?

All the articles out seem to imply it, but with the Royal Canadian Mint coming out with so many Wildlife series coins of limited mintage and number in the “set,” I just wanted to make sure.

If any body knows and can clarify, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Dannny, The Royal Australian Mint has issued the silver Kangaroo all these years in BU and Proof versions not the Perth Mint.
