More cheese made in June

Cheese production in the United States in June totaled 959 million pounds up 1.5 percent from June of 2014. Italian-type cheese production was up 1 percent at 415 million pounds and American-type cheese production was 3.6 percent higher than a year ago at 383 million pounds.

Wisconsin produced just under 251 million pounds of cheese in June up 5.4 percent from a year ago. American cheese production in the Badger State was up 6.4 percent at 73.3 million pounds with Cheddar up 5.9 percent at 48.9 million pounds. Italian cheese production was 6.4 percent higher at 127.5 million pounds.

California cheese production totaled over 200 million pounds in June up six-tenths-of-one-percent from June of 2014. American cheese production in the Golden State was 3 percent higher at 54.6 million pounds with Cheddar output 5.1 percent higher at 32.2 million pounds. Italian cheese production was up 1.7 percent from a year ago at 128.5 million pounds.

Butter production totaled 143 million pounds in June, 1.7 percent above a year ago.

Other dairy product production in June (compared to June, 2014):

  •             Nonfat dry milk; 164 million pounds (+10.6%)
  •             Skim milk powders; 34.7 million pounds (-34.6%)
  •             Dry whey: 80.7 million pounds (+1.7%)
  •             Lactose: 90.7 million pounds (-11.8%)
  •             Whey protein concentrate: 38.6 million pounds (-11.6)
  •             Regular ice cream: 70.5 million gallons (-4.6%)
  •             Lowfat ice cream: 47.3 million gallons (+10.9%)
  •             Sherbet: 3.79 million gallons (-9.4%)
  •             Frozen yogurt: 6.82 million gallons (+9%)

 

Year-to-date: total cheese production is just under 5.8 billion pounds up 2.1 percent from the first six months of 2014. Italian-type cheese production is 2 percent higher and American output is up 2.8 percent. Butter production is 1.4 percent below the January-through-June period of a year ago.
