A slight improvement to Indiana’s crops

After an overly saturated start to the growing season – some Indiana farmers are now finding soils to be a little on the dry side.  But, crop conditions have improved with the decreased rainfall.  According to the latest weekly Crop and Weather report, 47 percent of corn and 43 percent of soybeans are rated good to excellent.

Eighty-six percent of the corn crop is silking and 24 percent is in the dough stage.  Eighty-one percent of soybeans are flowering and 57 percent are setting pods.

In other crops around the state – 97 percent of the winter wheat crop is harvested, 81 percent of the alfalfa hay is on its 2nd cutting and harvest for the state’s mint, rye, cucumbers, sweet corn, cabbage, and melon are underway with tomato harvest  set to begin soon.

Ninety-one percent of the Topsoil and 95 percent of subsoil is adequate to surplus.
