Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you’ve had an amazing week! It’s been a great one here – nothing terribly exciting, just a good week.

Megan was on a local mission trip the first part of the week. I love our church! We are such a mission-minded (locally and globally) church that our middle school kids were feeling left out. There were plenty of missions opportunities for older teens and adults, but nothing for them.

So, last year, our youth pastor and some of the college kids took the middle school kids on their first mission trip to work in a nearby town with some agencies there. It was such a success that they went again this year. I love that our middle school kids were upset that there wasn’t an opportunity for them to serve others.

Josh spent some time recuperating from driver’s ed last week by hanging out with friends for a couple of days. There are two boys that he hangs out with a lot, so they just kind of move from house to house for a few days. We hosted on Sunday night and were treated to live music, since they all play an instrument.

Of course, just a couple of nights before, we were treated to live entertainment since Megan is taking voice lessons and her friend who spent the night is a talented drummer. Josh even got in on the action, playing guitar.

I finally made myself sit down and do school planning this week. I’m really loving my teacher planner from A Plan in Place. I’ll have a review next week, along with a chance for you to win one.

Homeschool Planners

I planned out our entire year! Okay, wait. Lest that sound too impressive, I really only had to plan out math. English, science, and history are covered in the kids’ homeschool curriculum. And I haven’t added in their electives yet. We won’t start those for a few more weeks, so I’ve got some time.

Math, though. Oh, math. We got behind last year because they use Teaching Textbooks and work on their own. Maybe there might have been an occasion or two where some math work didn’t get done and I didn’t catch it right away. {ahem}

They didn’t get terribly behind, but I’m determined to stay on top of where they should be in math this year. So, I wrote out the whole year, leaving some space here and there for catch-up days. It’s probably a good thing I wrote with an erasable pen.

I got an exciting text  yesterday. Brianna was selected as Student of the Month at her cosmetology school! She was recognized for attitude, attendance, and sanitation. Y’all would be super-impressed about that last part if you saw her room. {grin}

I am so proud of her! She is one of those wonderfully dependable people who is always on time and never misses work or school unless she is really sick.

Just a couple of things you need to know. First, I’ve got a couple of giveaways that are ending soon. The Why Homeschooling giveaway that I’m hosting ends today (Friday), so be sure to enter if you haven’t already.

I’m also giving away a two-book (digital copy) set of the Bible study that I’ve been using and loving. The giveaway is for the new books that will be released on August 1, First and Second Corinthians, so get entered for that one by Sunday night.

Finally, I just had one article at About.com this week, but it’s a good one for those who haven’t started school yet – 5 Tips for an Amazing Back-to-(Home)School.

I think that’s it for me this week. Y’all pray for me. We’ve dabbled in school for the last two weeks, but next week it’s back to a full schedule, minus electives, and it will be the first time the kids have been home doing school at the same time.

  1. Your cute cat pictures are killing me. And you know I don’t even like cats, so that’s high praise. 😉

    And math? Feeling your pain. It’s my homeschool nemesis. But you’ve [almost] inspired me to finish my own planning.

  2. The planning part is FUN, isn’t it? How are you liking the Teaching Textbooks? I’m on the fence, and I need to decide soon. Are you going to use them again this year?

    1. We love Teaching Textbooks. We’ve used them from 3rd grade (starting with Megan) all the way through high school with Brianna. Yes, we’ll continue using them.

  3. Cute lil’ kitty pictures! My two are attached to each other and only move to eat and poo. Since they’ve got old they seem to need to be close, maybe for warmth?
    I’m in the same place with my guys English as you are with their maths. It’s time for me to be a bit more diligent with checking it’s done properly. T has his first exam in January (physics) so I really need to get my backside into gear with regards to his writing!
    Please tell Brianna well done. And well done Mummy for bringing her up so well!!

    1. Thanks, Claire. I have a confession, though – I can’t take any credit for Brianna’s punctuality. I have a reputation for running late. That’s all her dad. I can take a little credit for the other elements of her dependability, but not that one. 🙂

      Good luck with writing! That can be another difficult area for me to stay on top of.
