Farm groups in Argentina to protest ahead of election

One of the world’s largest soybean producing countries is dealing with political unrest heading into a presidential election this fall.

Argentina trails only the U.S. and Brazil in soybean exports and three farm associations there are threatening to start protests after the August ninth primaries.

According to the president of the Argentine Rural Society, the reason for the protests, which are to include the suspension of grain and livestock trading, is because producers are getting about a third less than the street exchange rate for soybeans.

The farm groups are reportedly planning to meet with candidates starting next week and are holding off protests until after the primaries to avoid affecting the electoral process. Argentina’s first-round presidential elections will be October 25th.
