More mink in 2014

Mink pelt production in the United States increased 6 percent in 2014. The National Ag Statistics Service says a total of 3.76 million pelts were produced, the most since 1990*. The value of those pelts was $217 million up 9 percent from 2013. The average pelt brought $57.70 in 2014 up $1.40 from the previous year. Half of the pelts produced were black, 24 percent were Mahogany.

Wisconsin leads the nation with over 1.2 million pelts produced in 2014, Utah was second with 958,000 followed by Washington State with 855,000, Idaho with 345,590, Oregon with 309,350 and Minnesota with 244,520.

U.S. mink growers produced 1.794,900 Black pelts; 866,620 Mahogany; 265,300 Blue Iris; 132,750 White; 111,700 Pastel; 105,100 Sapphire; 101,480 Pearl; 93,230 Demi/Wild; 38,260 Violet; 21,670 Other and 13,260 Lavender.

The most pelts produced on record was 5.688 million in 1969 and 2,794 mink farms. Wisconsin was the leading state at that time as well with 1.7 million pelts, Minnesota was second with 906,000. Average prices over the last 40 years ranged from $20.40 in 1989 to $94.30 in 2011.

*Totals are unavailable for 2012 due to the budget sequester. 1981 numbers are also unavailable.
