Plant cover crops in washed out areas

Indiana state conservationist Jane Hardisty says it isn’t too early to think about preparing fields for the 2016 planting season.

She says cover crops can help repair some of the damage done to fields this year that were left unplanted or were washed out due to flooding.  “Get something growing out there over the winter,” she says.  “Break up that compaction layer and get ready for next spring.  So farmers can come in and plant they crop they want.”

She tells Brownfield to find the right cover crop program – farmers should contact their local NRCS office.  “Talk to our district conservationist,” she says.  “Tell them your circumstances.  They can tell you what kind of mixture of good cover crop is needed and if there are any programs available for cost share.”
