Using reoccurring patterns in relative proportions has been a staple of both Western and Eastern landscaping for centuries. So whether you’re looking for a classic Victorian garden or one with the Oriental Zen air, keep these tips in mind.

Stepping Stone Effect: Using stone or well-defined groups of plants, groups of similar patterns in a line or trail catches the eye. Whether it’s leading to something like a gazebo or just to the fence-line, this effect helps define your yard.

Proportions: Create areas with the right proportions like 1:2:4. A rectangular raised garden bin (x4) with a small viewing spot of gravel (x1) can be offset with two (x2) planters to the side for example.

Boundaries: Clearly marking areas with paths, raised edging or fencing, can help give form to your landscaping. Also consider functional aspects such as trap cropping for pest control.

Patterns: Plant colorful vegetation to form patterns. This can also be done with decorative stones and even your outdoor furniture!
