The Town and Village of Tupper Lake will host a public workshop on Thursday, May 24, 2012.  The workshop will run from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Goff-Nelson Memorial Library at 41 Lake Street.   All interested residents and business owners are welcome and encouraged to attend.

At the workshop, the main ideas from the Draft Tupper Lake Revitalization Strategy and Action Plan will be presented.  The draft document will be available for public review beginning Friday, May 18th at Town Hall, the Village offices, the library, and on the internet at http://tupper-lake.com.

Attendees at the workshop will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments/suggestions about the ideas presented.  Public feedback will be used by the Tupper Lake Revitalization Committee to make revisions to the draft document before submitting a final draft to the Town Board and Village Board over the summer.

If you are unable to attend the workshop, or if you have additional thoughts/suggestions about the Draft Tupper Lake Revitalization Strategy and Action Plan after the workshop, please send your comments to the Tupper Lake Revitalization Committee by Monday, June 11th.  Comments can be dropped-off or mailed to Mary Casagrain, Village Clerk at the Village of Tupper Lake, 53 Park Street, Tupper Lake, NY 12986; or they can be emailed to Melissa McManus at melissamcmanusllc@gmail.com.

The Revitalization Strategy and Action Plan builds upon over a decade of effort by the residents of Tupper Lake to enhance the environmental, social, and economic fabric of this special Adirondack community.  The vision and goals expressed through previous studies have been confirmed and refined as appropriate and specific actions for improving Tupper Lake’s waterfront and revitalizing Demars Boulevard (between the uptown and downtown sections of Tupper Lake) have been identified.  The focus of the report is to prioritize and ultimately implement projects that will improve long-term economic vitality and the quality of life in Tupper Lake.

The public workshop will be led by Melissa McManus and the Town/Village consultant for this effort – Behan Planning and Design of Saratoga Springs.  This project is funded by the Environmental Protection Fund Local Waterfront Revitalization Program administered by the NYS Department of State.

May 16th-F-35A Operational Basing Public Information Meeting-4pm-7pm, Tupper Lake Train Depot. Vermont Air National Guard (VANG), 158th Fighter Wing, Burlington, Vermont will present information on the possible training activities of the F-35 aircraft over the Adirondacks. The public informational meeting is being hosted by the Northern New York Military Air Space Committee. May 18th & 19th- Adirondack Scenic Railroad Volunteer Training Program-Tupper Lake Train Depot-Ever dreamed about working on the railroad? The Adirondack Scenic Railroad is looking for trainmen, conductors, engineers and maintenance-of-way workers.  Join us for our Adirondack Scenic Railroad volunteer training program on May 18th and 19th to start your journey! May 18th-FCBA Law Day Dinner-The Franklin County Bar Association will honor Ben Peets with this year’s Liberty Bell Award at its annual Law Day Dinner on Friday, May 18th, at the Tupper Lake Country Club. This year’s theme is No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom, with guest speaker Dr. Chris Brown, former Director of Democratic Initiatives for USAID/Russia. May 18th-First Stop! Tupper Lake-On Friday from 3pm-6pm Next Stop! TupperLake will welcome The Adirondack Scenic Railroad train as it makes it way back to the Tupper Lake Train Depot from it’s winter vacation in Utica. This special event continues to kick off the efforts to restore the rail line between Tuper Lake & Saranac Lake, which will pave the way for restored rail service between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid.
The highlight of this event will be a press conference which will highlight several very important announcements by Next Stop Tupper Lake, Garry Douglas from the North Country Chamber of Commerce and Kate Fish from the Adirondack North Country Association on the future of the railroad. Bill Branson, Chairman of the Adirondack Scenic RR will be on hand.
We’ve created an afternoon with activities to entertain the kids which include a train themed scavenger hunt, coloring contest, opportunity to watch the train arrive and then to explore the locomotive, blow the whistle and catch a bite to eat. This event is FREE of charge!

May 19th-Show your support for the Adirondack Club & Resort-The recent lawsuit filed against the Adirondack Club & Resort on March 22, 2012 has takenthe wind out of our sails. Where did that feeling we had on January 20, 2012 go? Please join us on May 19th as we demonstrate, and show the tenacity and strength of the people of Tupper Lake. Never one’s to quit, we are producing a video that will show the world our strength and desire for a better future.
On May 19th we will be offering free chair lift rides (ride up and walk down) from 9am-10:30am. At 11am we would like to get a picture of everyone for our video. We are asking people to wear their Ski Big Tupper Apparel. We will be handing out signs that say 10-1 for people to hold. Be a part of this important video by helping us show the faces of the people this recent lawsuit affects.  See everyone on May 19th!

Since 1981, Tupper Lake, NY has been THE place to be the second weekend of July.  The Annual Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Days parade brings thousands together along the 2 mile route to celebrate with outrageous floats, colorful costumes and plenty of candy!
The Woodsmen’s Association is pleased to announce their  Annual Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Days parade on Saturday, July 14, 2012.
The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce is issuing a challenge to local businesses to sign up to participate in the parade this year! We would like to see every business and organization participate in this historic parade. The 2012 Parade theme is:  “Live, Work, Play.”

Space is still available at the Tupper Lake Community Garden. The cost to lease a plot is $25 for the season or $12.50 for seniors and students.

The Community Garden began in 2008 as a space for children attending the town run day camp to learn about gardening and its importance. Since that time it has expanded, growing to 16 plots, (pun intended), and furnished with storage shed, compost bin and deer-proof fencing, thanks to a generous grant  received from the North Country Healthy Heart Network.

The community garden has received much attention with pictures from renowned photographer Nancie Battaglia appearing in North Country Public Radio’s book, “Stories, Food, Life”, and numerous articles appearing in Adirondack Life, Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Tupper Lake Free Press.

Become a Literacy volunteer tutor and support your community!

Literacy volunteers is a charitable organization whose mission is to enable people (primarily adults) to achieve their personal goals through literacy.  For more than 25 years LV have provided basic literacy, English-as-a-second language, G.E.D. preparation and family literacy programs.  The success of these programs is made possible by training volunteer tutors who provide one-on-one, student-centered instruction.  Literacy volunteers is currently looking for dedicated and qualified community members to participate in our tutor training.

Trained Tutors:

• Provide student-centered instruction for each learner.
• Discover new approaches and activities to implement.
• Have access to all literacy volunteer’s educational materials
• Receive additional trainings and professional development.

Training sessions will be held May 15, 22, 29 and June 5th at the Ivy Terrace Library in Tuper Lake from 5:30pm-8:30pm. Charles Perreault-Canadian Pro to speak on Friday, June 29th at the Wild Center. Daryl Mullholand – Associate Professor of Exercise and Sports Science will also be speaking!

Who is Charles Perreault?
-I come from a small village named Crabtree about 1 hour from Montreal, QC.
-I studied physical education and exercise science at Universite De Montreal.
-I currently live in Saint-Sauveut, in the mountains of the Laurantians where I swim, bike, run and x-country ski.
-I teach physical education at college level in L’assomption. I also train about 30 athletes from top level long distance athletes to regular weekend warrior triathletes.
-I am a former High Performance Director of Triathlon Quebec and Executive Director of the same federation.
-I have been racing in triathlon for 25 years now and have probably done around 300 triathlons (more or less, I stopped counting a long time ago…)

What has he been up to the last few years?
-I won a few triathlons here and there including a course record of the half ironman ESPRIT of Montreal (3h48), a few victories at the Tupper Lake Tinman Triathlon, the Quebec winter Pentathlon des Neiges.
-Member of the National Elite Long distance Canadian Team
-Work with coaches and athletes as a triathlon consultant.
-Long distance Canadian triathlon Champion and runner up (2010 & 2011)
