Even before officially opening in 2006, The Wild Center was a driving economic force in the region. Sourcing building materials within a 500 mile radius of Tupper Lake and lumbering, milling and air-drying all of the exterior siding within 25 miles contributed not only to the first Silver LEED certification of a museum in New York State, but it also began the substantial economic impact that the Center would have on the region.

The Wild Center sourced nearly half its goods and services from North Country vendors in 2011. The total economic impact of those purchases was $1.2 million, adding the equivalent of 15 new jobs to the region. The Wild Center is one of the largest local employers in the area with close to 80% of The Wild Center’s 38 employees living in Tupper Lake and surrounding towns. Their salaries had a $2.4 million impact in the North Country, meaning that money stayed local and was spent on groceries, clothing, mortgages, taxes and fuel among other things, resulting in 19 additional regional jobs. The study used data from 2011 and 2012 to compile the report.

More than 60,000 people visit The Wild Center each year with 85% coming from outside the North Country region. Those visitors add $10.5 million to the North Country’s economy, spending that generates 243 jobs. Visitors to The Wild Center reported that the Museum was the main reason for their visit to Tupper Lake that day. On average, visitors stay two days in the local area, and four days in the region, spending close to $900 during their travels.

“The Wild Center kindled a long awaited awakening for this region and has directly enhanced our bottom line,” said Terry and Robyn Doolen, owners of Shaheen’s Motel in Tupper Lake. “We also are appreciative of the environmental learning tools the Center provides to us personally and to the community at large – people want to feel part of the process and love to be included in the goals of improving our environment.”

“The Wild Center is an Adirondack showcase that educates and inspires and creates jobs and generates revenue,” said State Senator Betty Little. “It’s a model of how we can promote the natural wonder of the environment that surrounds us and gain an economic benefit important to the sustainability of our Adirondack communities.”

While more difficult to measure, there are qualitative impacts that The Wild Center has on the region. As a regional leader in science and technology applications, the Center partnered with NOAA to bring the first Science on a Sphere to New York State. Science education is at the core of what the Center does, educating children and adults about natural sciences, green building practices and renewable energy through traditional educational practices, as well as distance learning.

“We have a strong partnership with The Wild Center based upon our common interest in education,” commented Seth McGowan, Tupper Lake School Superintendent. “We refer to the Center as our science wing because that is where our students experience firsthand what they are learning about in the classroom.”

“We felt strongly that after seven years of operation, we needed to measure and quantify our impact with some formal data. It is humbling to see the broad impact that The Wild Center has on our community and region,” said Stephanie Ratcliffe, Executive Director of The Wild Center. “We come to work every day because this is what we love to do. The fact that the construction and now operation of The Wild Center creates not only a substantial economic benefit, but is also a significant member of the North Country community simply validates the work we do. We continually develop new ideas, like Wild Walk that will ensure we positively impact our community, both in the services we provide and economically. Innovative ideas will grow The Wild Center and our region.”

In 2013, the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce will bring race night to the annual Independence Day Celebration. In the grass, kids of all ages will be racing their sacks to the finish line in the sack races. Along side on the Fireman’s strip, teams will be competing against each other in their racing bed’s at a chance to take home the top prizes and perpetual bed-pan trophy! Along with the action you will enjoy live music throughout the night, delicious food from our food vendors and more.

The Tupper Lake Woodmen’s Days – July 13-14, 2013

The Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Association is pleased to announce that if the outpouring of support from the Community and Industry continues at this rate, they are confident they will be able to go forward with their full slate of events!

The Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Association was incorporated in 1983 to promote the Forest Products Industry, to bring industry people and others together, to promote public awareness and understanding of the industry, to celebrate the history of our forefathers and to produce the annual “Woodsmen’s Days Show”.

Tupper Lake was founded as a logging hub and mill town. The Municipal Park was the site of the “Big Mill” so it is appropriate our event is held there.

The Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Association is pleased to announce that the annual Woodsmen’s Days Parade will be held on Saturday, July 13^th. The 2013 Theme will be:

“A Blast from the Past!”

(Celebrating 30 Years of the TLWA).

TUPPER LAKE, NY – Registration is now open for the 2nd Annual Tupperpalooza Warrior Run. Scheduled for Saturday, August 3^rd at Big Tupper Ski Area, The Tupperpalooza Warrior Run is a challenging 3.5 mile race made up of a mix of intense obstacles, treacherous mountain terrain and lots of mud. Participants can compete individually or as a team of four.

With nearly 200 athletes participating in the very successful 2012 inaugural run, the 2013 Tupperpalooza Warrior Run is guaranteed not to disappoint. The race committee is already at work planning a longer and tougher course with new obstacles and most definitely more mud. There will also be a children’s course for children 13 and under.

“Obstacle races are really growing in popularity” states Tupper Lake Events Coordinator, Michelle Clement. “It’s exciting to be able to grow a race that is not only a great experience for the athletes, but is also an event that draws a strong visitor base to the Tupper Lake community.”

Also new this year, the race will feature ChronoTrack timing provided by FastFishes.net. ChronoTrack provides timing solutions for many of the largest races in the country. All Tupperpalooza Warrior Run participants will receive timing chips at registration. This will not only provide extremely accurate race results, but will also allow for less congestion on the race course as athletes start in race waves. “We can now keep track of just how tough our warriors really are” says Clement.

The Warrior Run is presented by the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and is the official kick off of “Tupperpalooza,” a week long festival in TupperLake celebrating the spirit of the Adirondack summer.

The journey to end cancer starts with a single step. The American Cancer Society invites you to take that step on June 15th-16th during the 3rd Annual Tupper Lake Relay for Life. When you walk to end cancer at a Relay event, it’s your opportunity to not only honor cancer survivors and remember loved ones lost, but also to raise awareness about what we can do to stay well from cancer and raise money to help fuel the world’s largest walk to end cancer.

About Relay For Life

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length

Although every Relay For Life is different, there are certain traditions at all Relays, no matter where they are held. These traditions help participants celebrate, remember, and fight back.

Celebrate – The Survivors Lap
Relay starts with a Survivors Lap an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are creating a world with more birthdays like those of each individual on the track.

Remember – The Luminaria Ceremony
After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence.

Fight Back – The Fight Back Ceremony
Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer.

No matter where you are, there’s a place for you at Relay and you can make a difference today by signing up online to start your own team or by simply making a donation.

Filming in Tupper Lake in October of 2009, CLONED: The Recreator Chronicles celebrates the natural beauty of the Adirondacks as a key element in the film.

The film centers around three characters, Tracy, Craig, and Derek (Stella Maeve, Alexander Nifong, and Jamal Mallory McCree), who embark on a camping trip in the woods. After a terrible storm forces them to seek shelter inside a nearby lake house, they inadvertently trigger a deadly experiment that puts their lives in terrible danger, and exposes them to the existence of their own personal clones. While featuring mostly unknown actors, Nyack local Stella Maeve, first came onto the scene in The Runaways, and many fans will recognize Star Trek’s John de Lancie.

The film, which centers on a campground and an isolated lake house, could have been shot anywhere. Yet director Gregory Orr, an acclaimed documentary filmmaker, was determined on his location idea. “I wanted to film in the Adirondacks, and not make a generic cabin-in-the-woods horror film. I knew that the area, especially in the fall, would offer a haunted majesty that is unique. I was advised against it by someone on the production who felt the park was too remote and difficult, but I stood firm, and that person left the production.  He was right that the weather slowed us down, but we had lots of cooperation from local residents and businesses that made up for any set backs and added to the final production.  I’d return in a second. In fact I plan to when we shoot the sequel.

Orr also shares the process of acclimating both the film and its actors to the real life set. “My co-producer Lynn Appelle negotiated one luxury that made a real difference to the acting. A week before production, Stella, Alex and Jamal joined me upstate in the Adirondack Mountains where we rehearsed in the actual locations, which was very helpful.” During this week the crew got to experience one of the region’s rare downsides, namely the ice-cold October water. Since the film features a few scenes of the characters swimming in the lake, the cast began prepping by jumping in each day, trying to acclimate to the temperature.

The breathtaking beauty, particularly found in the autumn season, truly highlighted the story of CLONED and Tupper Lake (or Brewster Island as it is referred to in the film) essentially becomes a member of the film’s cast. With the film’s imminent US launch, it is only a matter of time before Tupper Lake once again becomes home to nature’s deadliest creation: the clone.

CLONED: The Recreator Chronicles will be released nationwide on DVD and VOD on April 23^rd, 2013. 

A “Walk and Talk” through the site will begin at 5:00 pm at the Mill Street gateway to the park. Following the walk through the park, the group will gather at the Goff‐Nelson Memorial Library at 41 Lake Street to conclude the tour. A community meeting will then be held at the Library at 7:00 pm to introduce the project to the community and hear input from the public. All interested residents and business owners are welcome and encouraged to attend either or both sessions.

The Waterfront Park Beach Feasibility and Master Plan project is a priority project identified in the recently completed Revitalization Strategy and Action Plan. The Feasibility Study and Master Plan will complete the work begun in TupperLake’s Smart Growth planning effort in 2010. The project’s goal is to determine whether or not a beach is feasible on Raquette Pond and to develop a final plan for future park improvements. Construction will begin this summer on a new playground and Mill Street gateway improvements, and this project will finalize the plan for future improvements in the park.

The public workshop will be led by the design team: terrain, studioprospect and AEDA, and Melissa McManus, the community’s revitalization project coordinator. The Village and Town of Tupper Lake and the consultant team invite all interested parties to join on April 25th so we can collect your ideas for improvements, suggested uses and creative new program ideas. The design team will also be scheduling meetings with key user groups during their visit to TupperLake.
