Relay for Life Returns to Tupper Lake This Weekend, June 15-16

The journey to end cancer starts with a single step. In Tupper Lake they will be taking that step at 2pm this Saturday, June 15th when they kick of the 3rd Tupper Lake Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a 12-hour event where teams of friends and colleagues set up camp and take turns walking around a track to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to the disease and fight back by raising funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. When not walking, participants enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities, food and local entertainment.

The 2013 Tupper Lake Farmers’ Market Returns to the Wild Center Thursday, June 13th

The Adirondack Farmers’ Market Cooperative returns to the Wild Center for the 2013 season beginning on Thursday, June 13^th from 11 am to 3 pm. Local farmers and crafters will offer veggies and fruit, meat, baked goods, honey, jewelry, clothing and more each Thursday through September 19^th. The market is held in the Wild Center’s summer pavilion and is free and open to the public, no admission required.  FlavorFest, a celebration of the tastes of the Adirondacks, will take place on August 15^th. 20-30 hours a week. Must be flexible. Including some weekend hours.
Duties and Responsibilities:

• Meet and greet visitors, Chamber members, prospective members, and other request in a friendly, informative manner.
• Give accurate and clear directions to individuals visiting Tupper Lake and the surrounding region.
• Answer telephone and respond to e-mail inquiries in a timely manner.
• Keep daily visitor counts, including walk-ins and phone calls.
• Assist in upkeep of website and other chamber materials.
• Handle and distribute mail on daily basis.
• Coordinate volunteers in the Chamber office.
• Assist Chamber board and events coordinator with projects as necessary.
  Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent and computer skills a must.
• Highly organized, attention to detail, independent worker, with a upbeat, and positive attitude
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Professional customer service and telephone skills.
• Extensive knowledge of Tupper Lake and the Adirondacks.
• Ability to create and maintain professional relationship a variety of different people including, but not limited to The Tupper Lake
• Chamber of Commerce board and the events coordinator.

The 4th Annual Tupper Lake Lion’s Carnival Returns to Tupper Lake July 24-28, 2013

In the last week of July the Tupper Lake Municipal Park fills with the lights and laughter of families from around the north country as the Tupper Lake Lions Club host the world famous traveling carnival “Amusements of America“.

The Amusements of America midway includes a variety of the most popular carnival foods, tastefully presented to please every palate. They also feature games of skill and chance designed to suit players of all ages and interests. There are even special games for children that guarantee a prize with every play ensuring that everyone goes home with a smile on their face!

In addition to live music, there will also be children’s activities including a Inflatable Obstacle Course, Joust Arena, Enclosed Bounce House and Face Painting.  P2′s Irish Pub will be their with their famous beer tent and plenty of food vendors will also be on hand selling hamburgers, hotdogs, Pizza, Chicken, Kettle Corn, Ice Cream, Fried Bread Dough, Soda and Water.

Music will continue through 10pm when it will finish with a spectacular firework display.

In 2013 the Mt. Arab Masonic Lodge Flea Market will celebrate it’s 40th Anniversary as one of the premier events held in the Village of Tupper Lake. A family event started by the Order of Eastern Star and continued in the same tradition by Mt. Arab Lodge # 847 F&AM. The event has something for everyone. This three-day event draws people from the entire North Country. Thousands of shoppers and collectors make it to our friendly shores to witness first hand this unique blend of barter, trade and true salesmanship.

“Tupper Lake Through My Eyes” was a photo contest sponsored by the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and designed to capture the story of Tupper Lake through photographs. A top prize of $100 was awarded for the categories of: Live, Work and Play.

The winning photographs are:

LIVE – Nicholas Moeller – “Enjoying a Day at the Park”

WORK – Tracey Thomas – “Making Maple in TL”

PLAY – Jennifer Barrows-Garvey – “Lions’ Carnival”

Over 70 entries were submitted in the first annual contest. “The photos were all amazing” said events coordinator, Michelle Clement. “I know it made for a very difficult decision for the Chamber’s panel of judges.”

A slideshow has been made up of the contest submissions and was presented at the Tupper Lake Chamber Gala. It is now available online on the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce website.

The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce plans to host the photo contest again in the future, so keep your cameras ready.

Even before officially opening in 2006, The Wild Center was a driving economic force in the region. Sourcing building materials within a 500 mile radius of Tupper Lake and lumbering, milling and air-drying all of the exterior siding within 25 miles contributed not only to the first Silver LEED certification of a museum in New York State, but it also began the substantial economic impact that the Center would have on the region.

The Wild Center sourced nearly half its goods and services from North Country vendors in 2011. The total economic impact of those purchases was $1.2 million, adding the equivalent of 15 new jobs to the region. The Wild Center is one of the largest local employers in the area with close to 80% of The Wild Center’s 38 employees living in Tupper Lake and surrounding towns. Their salaries had a $2.4 million impact in the North Country, meaning that money stayed local and was spent on groceries, clothing, mortgages, taxes and fuel among other things, resulting in 19 additional regional jobs. The study used data from 2011 and 2012 to compile the report.

More than 60,000 people visit The Wild Center each year with 85% coming from outside the North Country region. Those visitors add $10.5 million to the North Country’s economy, spending that generates 243 jobs. Visitors to The Wild Center reported that the Museum was the main reason for their visit to Tupper Lake that day. On average, visitors stay two days in the local area, and four days in the region, spending close to $900 during their travels.

“The Wild Center kindled a long awaited awakening for this region and has directly enhanced our bottom line,” said Terry and Robyn Doolen, owners of Shaheen’s Motel in Tupper Lake. “We also are appreciative of the environmental learning tools the Center provides to us personally and to the community at large – people want to feel part of the process and love to be included in the goals of improving our environment.”

“The Wild Center is an Adirondack showcase that educates and inspires and creates jobs and generates revenue,” said State Senator Betty Little. “It’s a model of how we can promote the natural wonder of the environment that surrounds us and gain an economic benefit important to the sustainability of our Adirondack communities.”

While more difficult to measure, there are qualitative impacts that The Wild Center has on the region. As a regional leader in science and technology applications, the Center partnered with NOAA to bring the first Science on a Sphere to New York State. Science education is at the core of what the Center does, educating children and adults about natural sciences, green building practices and renewable energy through traditional educational practices, as well as distance learning.

“We have a strong partnership with The Wild Center based upon our common interest in education,” commented Seth McGowan, Tupper Lake School Superintendent. “We refer to the Center as our science wing because that is where our students experience firsthand what they are learning about in the classroom.”

“We felt strongly that after seven years of operation, we needed to measure and quantify our impact with some formal data. It is humbling to see the broad impact that The Wild Center has on our community and region,” said Stephanie Ratcliffe, Executive Director of The Wild Center. “We come to work every day because this is what we love to do. The fact that the construction and now operation of The Wild Center creates not only a substantial economic benefit, but is also a significant member of the North Country community simply validates the work we do. We continually develop new ideas, like Wild Walk that will ensure we positively impact our community, both in the services we provide and economically. Innovative ideas will grow The Wild Center and our region.”

“The Wild Center has been an amazing success story,” said Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber. “In economic terms, it has quickly become a major anchor in the heart of the Adirondacks. More than that, however, it has possessed an entrepreneurial spirit from the very beginning. From the revitalization of Tupper Lake to helping to foster a sustainable economy in the Adirondacks, The Wild Center has become a key player and partner.”
