I can hardly believe it has been so long, yet here we are already halfway through May and with only 5 weeks to go in the school year.

Speaking of school, this book has been especially timely for me as my son’s classroom teacher is one of the most crazy-making people I have ever met. Although I haven’t been totally successful in implementing the advice from this book, I will say that it has helped me get a better handle on myself as I navigated through the situation.

People Can’t Drive You Crazy If You Don’t Give Them the Keys by Mike Bechtle is a Revell title, published in October 2012. If the title alone doesn’t draw you in, here’s another gem I have shared with several people since reading this book:

Someone said that if you took all the crazy people in your life and laid them end to end . . . it would be best to just leave them there.

Bechtle’s approach to dealing with crazy-making people boils down to a few simple steps. First, try to influence change in the situation; next, focus on how you can adjust your own attitude by accepting the reality of the situation; and finally, decide if the situation is so unhealthy that you need to walk away from it. The book has 23 chapters, broken down into 5 parts:

Stuck in a Crazy World

Changing Someone Else

Changing Yourself

Changing Your Environment

Putting It into Practice

Of course, all of these things are easier said than done, which is why this is a book worth reading all the way through. With a blend of humor and truth, Bechtle helps us look at people more realistically and compassionately, as well as challenging us to look at our own part in each relationship. He also discusses what makes a healthy relationship and how to evaluate them.

Ultimately, People Can’t Drive You Crazy is a book about how to experience freedom in your life, even when you have to interact with and relate to other human beings who are just as flawed as you are. Ironically, freedom comes not from trying to control everyone around us, but from realizing that we actually can’t control them and that we must instead focus on how we respond to them. I think he sets up the dilemma best in this section from chapter 4:

If we’re going to avoid becoming victim of other people’s craziness, it’s critical to operate from a dual perspective: hope and realism. Without hope, maintaining the relationship seems futile. Without realism, we set ourselves up for the probability of disappointment. Without balancing the two views, we lose our ability to make choices that are healthy.

Now I just need a book about what to do when I am the person making other people crazy!

Thank you to Revell for providing a review copy of this book. No other consideration was provided for this review, and all opinions are my own.

So, I haven’t really been blogging much lately, for a variety of reasons. I had taken a break from reviewing at 5 Minutes for Books over the holidays and found that, even once the new year started, I didn’t feel free to continue with that endeavor. But I do have a few books that had been sent to me from one publisher or another, and I would like to share my thoughts on them as I have the time.

One of these titles was The Reunion. Written by Dan Walsh and published by Revell, it is the story of Aaron Miller, a Vietnam vet living in obscurity as a trailer park handyman in Florida. Aaron has long been estranged from his family, having fallen victim to addiction and homelessness after his return from the war. God got a hold of his life, however, so all is not lost. He spends his time ministering to those God puts in his path and living out the gentle faith that has grown out of his pain and suffering.

Aaron’s biggest regret is losing touch with his two children, Steve and Karen. All he has left is an old picture of them, but he’s sure that, even if he knew where they were, they wouldn’t want to hear from him again. Of course, we know that God always desires reconciliation and forgiveness, and this book gives us a beautiful picture of how that can happen. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I won’t go further with my description of the story. But I will say that we do get to meet Steve and Karen, along with a number of other fascinating characters, in the course of the book.

Beyond the story itself, The Reunion is a well-crafted book with a satisfying mix of emotional depth, mild adventure, a touch of mystery and even a bit of romance! The author’s ability to switch between the various characters’ voices is superb; I had no trouble keeping track of who was the focus and feeling immersed in their lives.

Reading, as I do, so many novels written by women, I am appreciative of the men who are able to bring their perspectives to the world of fiction in a way that resonates with me. Although Walsh definitely has his own voice, his writing put me somewhat in mind of Robert Whitlow and Ray Blackston. I whole-heartedly recommend this book and am myself looking forward to reading some of his previous novels as well.

I’m posting this a day early since tomorrow is Christmas Day (and my birthday). I hope all of you who celebrate the birth of the Savior will be blessed with a wonderful holiday.

Just fiction this month, and primarily for escape value, but here’s what I’ve finished since my last nightstand post:

Delusion In Death (In Death #35) by J.D. Robb – 4 stars, Eve and Dallas never disappoint, and I loved the twist on Eve’s interactions with Summerset in this one

Home from the Sea (Elemental Masters #8) by Mercedes Lackey – 4 stars, enjoyed this one a lot

Redoubt (Valdemar: Collegium Chronicles #4) by Mercedes Lackey – 4 stars, nice addition to the Valdemaran storyline

A Reluctant Queen: The Love Story of Esther by Joan Wolf – 4 stars, interesting fictionalization with a different take on some of the details than I have seen before, very good

Downfall (Intervention #2) by Terri Blackstock – 3 stars, fairly enjoyable Christian suspense, albeit a bit far-fetched at times

The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club by Wanda E. Brunstetter – 3 stars, very nice contemporary story with a diverse cast of characters

The Soldier’s Wife by Joanna Trollope – 3 stars, definitely liked it better than the last one I read by her, much closer to what I remember reading in the past

On my nightstand right now, besides a few random reads from the library, is House Rules by Jodi Picoult. I have heard mixed reviews about both the quality of the writing and the content itself, so might have passed on it myself. However, a friend and I are starting a book club centered on titles that have central characters or themes with autism/Aspergers, and she picked this book as our first selection. It should make for an interesting discussion, at least!

Wow, where did the fall go? Between getting to know a new team at my son’s school and having a class of six new trainees at work, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind. As you read this, my mom has arrived for a week-long visit, so the holidays will be quite full for us this year as well!

The end of fall also means it is time to update you on my progress with the Fall Into Reading challenge hosted by Katrina over at Callapidder Days.

Beautiful One, edited by Shae Cooke – STILL SITTING ON BOOKSHELF

***Yeah, I know this is pathetic. I have a very bad track record with non-fiction. I honestly think I will enjoy all of these books, but when I reach for a book at the end of the day, it almost always ends up being fiction. Oh well!

Fiction from my TBR list (dependent on what I can find at the library):
Downfall by Terri Blackstock – READ
River’s Song by Melody Carlson- READ
Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen – READ
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – JUST GOT FROM LIBRARY HOLD AND PLAN TO READ BY END OF YEAR
The Red House by Mark Haddon – DNF
Loving by Karen Kingsbury – READ
Insurgent by Veronica Roth – READ
Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos – READ
The Song Remains the Same by Allison Winn Scotch – READ
The Story of Beautiful Girl by Rachel Simon – STILL NEED TO GET FROM LIBRARY
The Other Family by Joanna Trollope – READ
The Choice by Robert Whitlow – READ

So, 14 read out of 24 – at least it’s more than half, right? I did read more books than this over the course of the fall, but I managed to stay pretty focused on the list most of the time.

How about you? What have you been reading this fall? And what do you plan to curl up with over the winter?

Can you believe we are only a month away from the end of 2012? So much has changed in my life this year, and yet it seems to have gone so fast. I hope that doesn’t just mean that I’m getting old!

I am taking a bit of a break from 5 Minutes for Books, so I only have one review published there in the last month: What the Zhang Boys Know: A Novel in Stories, which is an intriguing collection by Clifford Garstang. A bit gritty in the middle, but good overall.

I have also spent some time catching up on the titles I had received from Future Horizons, which could all be very good additions to a special needs toolbox. Here are the links to my reviews:

This is Gabriel Making Sense of School by Hartley Steiner is a fun and informative children’s book about sensory processing disorder.

In-Sync Activity Cards by Joye Newman and Carol Kranowitz is a great new set of activity cards with customizable sensory activities.

A QUEST for Social Skills by JoEllen Cumpata and Susan Fell is a ready-to-use curriculum for social skills instruction aimed at the middle school level (although I think it could be used quite successfully with upper elementary and even with high schoolers as well).

I have been doing a lot of reading lately, many of which are from my Fall Into Reading list and/or my TBR list. The titles below are linked to Goodreads, and I have listed how many stars I would give each one in lieu of a review:

The Truth About Children and Divorce: Dealing with the Emotions So You and Your Children Can Thrive by Robert Emery – 5 stars (highly recommended to read even before you separate; helped me put a lot of things in perspective)

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green – 5 stars (a YA must read!!)

The Narrow Path by Gail Sattler – 5 stars (picked up on a whim and absolutely loved it!)

When in Doubt, Add Butter by Beth Harbison – 4 stars

Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen – 4 stars (young adult)

The Choice by Robert Whitlow – 4 stars

This Scarlet Cord by Joan Wolf – 4 stars (fictionalization of the Biblical character Rahab; quite different from Pearl in the Sand by Tessa Afshar but still quite well-done)

Love Finds You in Martha’s Vineyard by Melody Carlson – 3 stars (okay but not as good as her other books or even as the other Love Finds You stories I have read so far)

Hym and Hur by Phillip Frey – 3 stars (enjoyable short fantasy story)

Loving (Bailey Flanigan #4) by Karen Kingsbury – 3 stars

Angels at the Table: A Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy Christmas Story by Debbie Macomber – 3 stars (cute, fun holiday story where the popular trio of angels gets an apprentice named Will)

The Last Boyfriend (Inn Boonsboro #2) by Nora Roberts – 3 stars (classic Roberts trilogy with 3 girls and 3 guys along with a mysterious ghost – what’s not to like?)

Insurgent (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth – 3 stars (young adult, not as good as the first book, had a bit too many twists and turns to find the center)

The Song Remains the Same by Allison Winn Scotch – 3 stars

I did not finish, and in fact barely even started, The Red Door by Mark Haddon. As much as I loved The Curious Incident, I could not get past even the first chapter of this book. I felt like a pinball in a really bad arcade game, what will all the quick shifts and sentence fragments. I got a bit farther into Some Kind of Fairy Tale by Graham Joyce, but stopped after I found myself skimming through entire chapters in search of something to move the story along a bit faster.

I have a lot of books still on my pile to read, but I’m not really sure which I’m going to read next. My priorities right now are to spend some time in Job preparing for my small group and to keep up with my Divorce Care homework so I can get the most out of the last few sessions as possible.

I’m curious – what was your favorite read this past month?

by JoEllen Cumpata and Susan Fell
Future Horizons, 2010

About the Book

Why start a social skills program?
The question is not why, but why not?

With inclusive education becoming the norm in schools nationwide, teachers often struggle to address students’ non-academic needs—but teachers need ready-to-use lessons that won’t interfere with their curriculum.

QUEST (Questioning, Understanding, and Exploring Social Skills and Pragmatic Language Together) is a social skills program created to help middle school students with ASD who struggle with pragmatic language and social skills.

Developed by a school social worker and speech language pathologist, the program uses an intensive, proactive approach to teaching social skills, combining written instruction with games, activities, and student interaction.

Six helpful units—School Survival Basics, Understanding and Managing Emotion, Communication Skills, Making Friends and Interacting with Peers, Personal Safety, Vocational Readiness—can be implemented either chronologically or on their own. Evidence-based research supports the methods used and students have a great time learning-by-doing, through role-play and real-world experience. Parents are kept in the loop with email updates and evaluations. Everyone wins with this program!

Best of all, the book includes a CD of printable worksheets, letters, forms, and more!

QUEST covers: Greetings, Paying Attention, Daily Hygiene, Asking for Help, Understanding Feelings, Getting Angry/Calming Down, Managing Stress, Starting a Conversation, Making and Keeping Friends, Gossip, Bullying, and Teasing, Resisting Peer Pressure, Dating, Internet and E-mail Safety, and many more!

My Thoughts:
I am extremely impressed with this book. The lessons seem perfectly suited to the upper elementary and older students, which is where my son is now. With his moving into fourth grade this year and to a school with a more established social skills program, he has actually begun receiving group instruction on a regular basis, through a combination of push-ins during group work in science and social studies to lunch bunches and other small group activities. I can see the lessons in this book tying in very easily with what the SLP is doing, as well as being age-appropriate for the kids.

The manual is divided into several topical sections:

The school survival section has many of the things we are trying to instill in my son right now, from paying attention and asking for help to organizing his workspace and using an assignment book. Plus there’s even a lesson on daily hygiene, which is quickly becoming more important at our house!

The sections on understanding emotions, communication skills, and making friends are all topics that he has been working on for years, but these lessons seem to provide a fresh approach to use within a structured classroom setting that also emphasized practical application of the skills.

The personal safety and vocational readiness skills seem most appropriate for middle school and high school, students, although some of the information is more and more needed by younger students as kids may still encounter bullying and gossip, as well as be socializing online at an earlier age than the previous generation.

The book also includes a CD with PDF files of all the necessary printables for the lessons, making it as easy as possible to prepare and implement the program. I am excited about being to share this with my son’s SLP and hope that she will find it to be as useful as I think it will be!

by Joye Newman, MA, and Carol Kranowitz, MA
Sensory World, 2012

About the Set
These two experienced authors have over seventy combined years of teaching experience and have learned the best ways to help children learn and grow using their motor development skills. Now parents can tap that experience and genius, using these handy cards to help their kids grow, learn, and develop to the best of their abilities!

Divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced activities, each card tells you why and how the activity works, what you need for it, and ways to make it more challenging. It also tells you what to look for, to make sure your child is getting the most out of the activity.

My Thoughts:
I was very excited to get this set for review, especially since I have been so pleased with an earlier set from the same publisher, called Move-About Activity Cards (linked to my review). I have found them to be very useful with my son, and the school team really likes using them during his sensory breaks.

This set is much more detailed and seems like it would have a lot of different applications, from sensory and movement needs, to development of motor planning and imitation, as well as direction-following skills.

The cards have great illustrations and are color-coded by skill level, plus each one includes ideas for how to make it a bit harder, which makes it very easy to customize for individual abilities and interests. They also include clear instructions regarding what materials you need and what you have to do to set up the activity, which is extremely helpful when planning which ones are workable given your resources at that time.

For my own child, I could see these cards being useful for his sensory breaks or even to work on turn-taking (i.e. allowing someone else to be in charge) in a peer group without the competitive stressors involved in playing a game. Although he is 10 and starting the preteen phase of his development, I still believe he would be drawn to the novelty of the cards and the imaginative activities.

written by Hartley Steiner
illustrated by Brandon Fall
Sensory World, 2012

About the Book:
This is Gabriel Making Sense of School provides a look into the challenges children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) face in the classroom. This easy to read and beautifully illustrated picture book gives teachers, parents and students a better understanding of all seven senses, how they are each affected at school and what kinds of accommodations are necessary to help children with SPD become learning sensations!

My Thoughts:
This is a perfect book for elementary students to share with their classmates to help them understand about the ways their senses may work differently and why they might need different objects or strategies to cope with being in school every day. Each of the eight senses is briefly explained in kid-friendly language, followed by examples of why this could be a problem for a child with sensory processing disorder and what types of things could help make it better.

The book is short enough to be read aloud to a class in one sitting and easy enough to read for most second or third graders. I would highly recommend it to elementary school teachers and therapists, or even as a great book for a parent to come in and read to a class.

Discount Opportunity: If you order This Is Gabriel Making Sense of School directly from Future Horizons, you can use the code INTERRUPTED to receive 15% off and free shipping in the continental US.

Well, another month is almost done, and it’s time to look back at what I’ve read over the last few weeks and see what is coming up next. Between my love of books and my love of putting things in order, this is probably my favorite post of the month.

I posted three reviews at 5MFB/5MFM recently, all three of which were Christian fiction. First was Be Still My Soul by newcomer Joanne Bischof, which is a historical romance set in Appalachia, followed by You Don’t Know Me by Susan May Warren, which is another installment in her Deep Haven series. The final one was Life with Lily, a charming middle grade novel about a young girl growing up Amish, written by Suzanne Woods Fisher and Mary Ann Kinsinger. Suzanne was even gracious enough to write an On Reading column for us about what the Amish read in their homes.

I read quite a few other books this month, five of which I posted reviews for (click on the titles to check out my reviews). The first is nonfiction, the second is young adult/vampire, and the rest are Christian fiction:
