Self proclaimed as “the world’s finest purveyor of indie pop” Labrador Records rarely take a step wrong in their releases. Sambassadeur, one of their most loved acts (along with Suburban Kids With Biblical Names and The Mary Onettes) are back with their first single since 2007’s ‘Final Say’, which just so happens to be one of the greatest pop songs of the 21st Century (my words not theirs. If you don’t believe me, download the mp3 at the bottom of this post!).

‘Days’ does not disappoint one iota. Admittedly, there’s no real progression sound -wise from their last album Migration – the band opting to use the “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” approach. Which is no bad thing, because if Sambassadeur know one thing it’s how to write a bloody great big pop hook. Download ‘Days’ and the aforementioned ‘Final Say’ below. Vetiver announce new single ‘More Of This’, download remix inside!

The much loved Vetiver return to return this month with new single “More Of This”. The new single will be released on limited edition 12” vinyl on Monday 30th November and will be backed Andy Cabic’s (the brain behind Vetiver) very own remix of “More of This” – a jam that takes the original, strips it to the bone and then soaks it in some lazy ass African and Hawaiian rhythms. Ends up sounding like a cut from the latest Phoenix record – which is obviously a very good thing indeed. Download the remix below…

Vetiver will play Jazz Café, London on Thursday 10th December with Bees and Fruit Bats.

Four Tet announce new album for 2010

Four Tet has announced plans to release his heavily anticipated new album.

Entitled There Is Love In You, it’ll see the light of day on January 25th 2010. It’s Kieran Hebden’s first full length album in over four years and is his fifth LP to date.

Dag för Dag announce long awaited debut album ‘Boo’

American-Swedish brother-sister duo Dag för Dag follow up their Shooting From The Shadows EP with the release of their debut album Boo (due March 1st), preceded by single ‘Animal’ which is released December 7th.

The album was recorded in two seperate sessions in the States and Sweden. Five songs were produced by Secretly Canadian recording artist Richard Swift, with the remaining seven songs produced by the band alongside Johannes Berglund. Download ‘Animal’ below – it’s a sweet track, sounds like a rabid Arcade Fire.

First Aid Kit announce debut album details

Swedish teenagers Klara and Johanna Söderberg (19), AKA First Aid Kit, have confirmed details of their debut album, The Big Black and The Blue (that’s the cover art up there), which will be released by Wichita Recordings on 25th January 2010.

Spoon have announced plans to release their seventh album, Transference, on January 26 in North America via Merge and January 25 in Europe via Anti-.

The record features 11 songs produced by the band, including recent single “Got Nuffin”.

My Sad Captains

A dependable friend in these troubled and faddy times, Rough Trade Shops’ RoTa afternoons have been running like clockwork for 10 years now, every Saturday 4pm – 8pm and ALWAYS FREE ENTRY.

The first of (hopefully) many TLOBF curated RoTa events will take place this Saturday afternoon (November 7th). Hopefully, we’ve put together a line up for them to be proud of:

Opening the afternoon is the quirky acoustic noodlings of A GUN RACK? or Mark Gamble from Crouch End as he’s known to his nearest and dearest. Self deprecating folk pop at its best. Do not miss.

A favorite on the London live circuit, TRISTRAM will be playing RoTa straight off the back of supporting Peggy Sue and, with his debut EP Someone Told me a Poem coming out early next year it seems we have much to look forward too!

Here’s how Tristram sums up his music: “I find life mildly and yet constantly overwhelming. I would like to write songs about tragic and ill-fated love affairs or about notorious outlaws, and sing them from the tops of windswept cliffs, but instead I find myself standing on chairs at house parties and singing songs about my bike. Which may be a contemporary equivalent. These songs are intended as lullabies, for dark and uncertain times.”

Next up sees a very special set from THE TAILORS. Returning on November 30th with their second album Come Dig Me Up – this is your chance to see one of the finest Alt. Country bands this country has produced in years. The band will be playing their set at RoTa, then hopping across town to play a headline set at The Betsy Trotwood.

Headlining will be Stolen Recordings’ MY SAD CAPTAINS. This London based foursome come Steve Lamacq, John Kennedy and Marc Riley approved. Their debut album Here & Elsewhere is a work of hushed wonder. A band not to be missed.

In conjunction with the release of Foxbase Beta (Richard X’s fantastic re-working of Saint Etienne’s legendary 1992 debut Foxbase Alpha), Heavenly Records have also released a limited edition 12″ entitled the Foxbase Beta EP which features an extended mix of ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’. The main event on the EP though is the remix of ‘Spring’ by Gothenburg based production duo and friends of TLOBF: Air France.

Never to shy away from their love for Etienne, with the sound and influence of the seminal London trio strewn across AF’s recordings and infamous DJ sets, Joel and Henrik were asked to remix ‘Spring’ after Saint Etienne personally invited them to DJ for them at their Bloomsbury Ballroom shows back in May. What they came up with can only be described as a balearic masterpiece, which is why we’re thrilled to be able to offer the track exclusively on TLOBF. The only catch – you can only grab it for the next 48 hours… so act fast before you miss out! The mp3 has now been removed from our server… Told you to act fast! You can still stream the song in full below, though.

I got in touch with Joel and Henrik earlier today to ask them what the original song meant to them. Their response: “This is the answer to our prayers. ‘Spring’ is the song we fucked to when we were eleven and took rohypnol raw”.

Air France are currently holed up in their Gothenburg studio recording the follow up to last years triumphant No Way Down EP.

[Download] Fionn Regan – Protection Racket

We reported earlier in the month on the imminent release of The Shadow Of An Empire, the new long-player from Irish wunderkind Fionn Regan. Today, we’re happy to be able to offer the first taster from the album – released via Heavenly Records early 2010.

‘Protection Racket’ is released as a single on December 7th, far removed from the stark folk ballads of 2006 debut album The End Of History the song acts as a perfect introduction to the scratchy Dylan-isms and punk bile spread generously across the new record.

Fionn will be previewing material from the album in November, including a sold out show at Heavenly Records’ own bar The Social.

Beach House confirm new album for January

Long time TLOBF favourites Beach House have confirmed release plans for their third album.

Entitled Teen Dream, it will see the light of day via Bella Union on 25th January.

Unfortunately we couldn’t make it to the listening party last night, so can’t tell you what it’s like… epic TLOBF fail…

However, Bella Union themselves are calling it their “career-best”, so it’s definitely worth looking forward to.

Alessi’s Ark Launches Christmas Cracker show at Luminaire

Alessi’s Ark has announced details of rather special Christmas show in London.

Alessi’s Christmas Cracker will take place at the Luminaire on the 10th December 2009. It will feature performances from Alessi herself alongside the Treetop Flyers and Jake Bellows. Tickets are £8 in advance and £10 on the door. Everyone attending should bring a present for a bit of Secret Santa swapsies!

Taylor Mitchell RIP

Oh! Canada is saddened to report the tragic death of Toronto singer/songwriter Taylor Mitchell yesterday. Mitchell was in the middle of an East Coast tour when she was attacked by coyotes while walking in Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

Taylor’s debut album For Your Consideration saw her joined by a backing band including Justin Rutledge, and has gained considerable acclaim. She was recently nominated for the “Young Performer of the Year” award at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

TLOBF and Oh! Canada would like to extend our condolences to Taylor’s friends and family.

Tortoise to play closing night of London’s Jazz Festival

Tortoise return to London for a special one-off date at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the London Jazz Festival 2009. The show on 22nd November features material from their new album Beacons of Ancestorship.

Supporting and collaborating on the night are seminal electronic pioneers Cluster, the duo of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius. They return to London following the release of Qua, their first studio album in over a decade, earlier this year.

Taking influence from Tortoise, Trouble Tune is a specially curated afternoon of free live music and visuals exploring the territories between jazz and experimental music. From 3pm on the day, The Clore Ballroom at the Royal Festival Hall will be transformed into a meeting ground for live collaboration between musicians, DJs and visual artists.

This special afternoon will feature a 60-minute DJ set by ‘Appleblim’ (Laurie Osborne), one of the most respected names in UK dubstep; a special collaboration between dubstep multi-instrumentalist Bass Clef (Ralph Cumbers) and a collective of live musicians led by Shabaka Hutchings and Jason Yarde; live dubstep artist Geiom (Kamal Joory); Matt Yee King performing with a piece of computer software which uses live-coding to generate music; plus live visuals by the Tilt Collective.

Ja Ja Ja! TLOBF.COM chosen as Media Partners for new Nordic Club night…

Since The Line Of Best Fit first launched as a tiny blogspot site back in 2006, we’ve always been great supporters of up and coming Nordic music. Not a week goes by without us harping on about a new emerging talent from the Scandinavian regions. Which is why we’re absolutely thrilled to announce that we’ve been picked as an official partner in the brand new London Club Night “Ja Ja Ja”. A monthly event held at The Lexington which will showcase some of the finest talent Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland has to offer. The Line Of Best Fit will be the nights official online partner, whilst Clash Magazine has been chosen as print partner.

The launch night (curated by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens) will take place on Thursday November 19th at The Lexington, Kings Cross and feature sets from TV Off (Finland), I Was A King (Norway), Kira Kira (Iceland) and Francis (Sweden). Here’s the back story surrounding the club night, told by the creators themselves.

The night aims to provide a strong independent platform where new ‘export ready’ artists across multiple genres are able to showcase their music to key British music industry professionals, media, tastemakers and punters alike.

The Nordic region has a long tradition of punching way above its weight on the international music scene. While the Nordic scene has certainly made its mark on the international commercial world (think acts like Abba, A-ha, Aqua, The Rasmus, Bjork and Sigur Ros) the Nordic countries have fostered a wealth of innovative music talent to great international recognition and acclaim.

In recent years the Nordic scene has come into its own as act after act have broken through from all the separate countries: The Hives, Jens Lekman, The Cardigans, Jose Gonzales, The Knife and Fever Ray from Sweden; Röyksopp, Kings of Convenience and Datarock from Norway; Jori Hulkkonen, Jimi Tenor and Pan Sonic from Finland; Mew, The Ravonettes and Trentemøller from Denmark; and Björk, Sigur rós, múm and Emiliana Torrini from Iceland.

JA JA JA aims to draw attention to this hotbed of talent on a monthly basis. The high concentration of industry professionals and international media in London makes it an ideal location.

The central London venue will be The Lexington, with a launch party spread across both floors on November 19th featuring live performances from Kira Kira, Francis, I Was A King and TV Off. The bands for this show were selected from a shortlist by Huw Stephens of BBC Radio 1 Introducing, and more information on each act will follow soon.

Each night will feature specially invited British curators who will program the final line-up. Artist submissions from the various Nordic countries will be reviewed by the respective export offices, who will produce a shortlist based on ‘export readiness’. The guest curator will then select his favourite 3 artists for the night.

JA JA JA is an initiative supported by the Nordic Export Offices (NOMEX) represented by; Export Music Sweden, Music Export Denmark, Music Export Finland, Icelandic Music Export and Music Export Norway.

Rough Trade sign Warpaint!

Rough Trade have announced the signing of LA quartet Warpaint.

Sounding not unlike a more minimal Bat For Lashes, their ethereal music flirts between psychedelia and folk with a touch of madness just bubbling underneath.

At the core of the band are founding members Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman and Jenny Lee Lindberg who formed the band in 2007.

A 5 track EP Exquisite Corpse will be available in the USA this October and UK & Europe in November.

Rough Trade will be releasing a full length album next year.

I was only talking about These New Puritans and their debut the other day (one of my favourites of 2008), and someone promised me they were working on a new album… They weren’t lying!

The band have announced details of their second album, Hidden, which will see the light of day on the 18th January 2010. The album was produced by These New Puritans frontman Jack Barnett alongside Graham Sutton, and mixed by Dave Cooley.

The album will be preceded by seven-minute comeback single ‘We Want War’ on January 11th.

Midlake confirm UK shows for January, cover art and Feb for new album!

One of Bella Union’s most successful and celebrated acts, Midlake, make their long-awaited return in February 2010 with The Courage of Others. That’s the cover art at the top… sinister!

The album will be released on the 1st Feb, and will feature the following tracks:

The band will be playing a number of intimate warm-up shows in the lead up to the album’s release, including a New to Q show at the Tabernacle in London. A bigger UK tour will then follow in mid-February, info to follow soon. Can’t wait for the Cambridge show…
