For Valentine’s Day, instead of maybe going out and spending a lot of time and money at a fancy restaurant, I suggest using your couponing skills and buying a few groceries and making dinner for your loved one, which is more from the heart! And whatever you make, you can present it the way you’d like, so you can cut your chicken into a heart, or spell out “I Love You” in peas, whatever floats your boat!

With the free offers for making cards on various sites, I already have one for my husband. Cost – zero.

Several years ago, my hubby and I started going to the card store together on Valentine’s Day to pick out a card for each other. As usual, it was hard to choose just one so we literally stood there reading cards and handing ALL of the ones we liked to each other right there in the store. After reading each of them, we carefully put them back in the right spots on the racks knowing the other had read all the things we wanted to say. So much easier than finding the PERFECT card to buy. We usually grab our favorite candy to buy as we head out of the store. Not only do we save money by not actually buying the cards, we also aren’t wasting trees or bringing more stuff into our house. We can spend a long time reading and passing cards to each other but it’s so much fun to have the time together “telling” each other why and how we love the other.

We made Valentines cards from scrap paper and I used an old potato that would have just gone into the trash to make a heart shaped and “x” shaped stamp. We dipped the potato in paint and my three year old had a great time. I didn’t have to spend a dime and we have fun Valentines cards for grandparents and friends. We also made sugar cookies from scratch and decorated them with the sprinkles we had left over from Christmas (who said Valentine cookies can’t have green sprinkles). And my husband and I are having a pasta dinner at home that I purchased all the ingredients for for pennies because of coupons. We’ll also be saving gas by having a candlelight dinner at home.

Oddly enough…I save for Valentine’s Day by hitting the Christmas clearance sales. I pick up red plates, cups, gift bags, etc., at a fraction of their regular cost, and I use those for Valentine’s Day . (Red is red, right?)

Buy the cheap Valentines hearts candy a week before Valentine’s Day and pick out the ones with sayings you like. Tuck them in hidden areas to surprise your family or friends. For example: on their pillow, in their coat pockets, on the driver’s seat of the car, in their lunchbox, on top of their toothbrush in the drawer, etc. etc. It makes it a fun game that everyone will enjoy.

We switched out game plan this year. Instead of spending a lot to make one day fabulous, we used what we already had to celebrate Love Week (the week leading up to Valentines Day). Red streamers to “wrap” their doorway at night, making hot cocoa dipping spoons together (melt chocolate chips, pour into plastic spoons , decorate with sprinkles and freeze to harden. Putting branches from a tree in a vase on the table to hang love notes from. Nothing extravagant, but the kids have loved it!

For those living in the southern…warmer states i suggest a park picnic lunch with your loved ones. I utilize the Valentine candy on sale. I take a piece of plastic wrap, 20 inches cut lengthwise for two pieces. Alternating the pieces of candy, lay them out leaving an inch between and from both edges of plastic. Roll “pigs in a blanket” style. Use pieces of yarn, or ribbons from a previous gift cut long enough to tie bows between each of the candies. You can color coordinate, or make up a candy necklace theme. Overlap the ends and tie off. Kids and adults alike love this creative gift for Valentine’s Day!

We have posted these details a number of times, but we wanted to keep posting this to share how these gift certificates work.

We wanted to share with you how these certificates work using one of our new favorites. A couple of weeks ago we shared that our entire family of seven experienced the worst bout of sickness we’ve had in years! In fact, we can’t express how thankful we were for your encouragement and the “get better fast” tips you shared with us.  It really was one of the worst sicknesses we’ve had in over four years.  And, you know when you are really sick how it is just the little things that really brighten your day and make you feel leaps and bounds better.  Well, let us share with you a little story how our day was brightened in the midst of our sickness and misery.

It was a cold, dreary and quite miserable day (we’re not making it up – it was sleeting outside and truly cold).  All about our home were coughs, sneezes, fevers and downright gloom.  Then, much to the surprise of our sniffling heads we hear a knock on the front door.  “What is it momma?”  It was nothing else but the delivery man bringing a most providential and VERY welcomed sight – a package with the words White Cloud Facial Tissue surrounding it.  And although we each had our own box of Kleenex in our hands, the boxes were set down to find out just what was inside.

We opened our package of tissues, and the faces of four little kids’ faces lit up with sheer joy! We have never seen these kids get so excited about tissues.  Some of it could be that their tissues were becoming their closest friends.  It could also be that they had these beautiful bright packages that you see in the images in this post.  But either way, their sick little faces said it all! This was their new tissues! They each quickly picked their favorite designs, danced around a bit, tucked their boxes under their arms like a teddy bear and went back to their beds.

It was a moment that shocked us! They were really that excited about their tissues.  But with that said, the real test of what we thought of these tissues had yet to come – the nose test.  Mind you our noses were primed and ready to test.  They were red, sensitive, and aching for comfort. This was the perfect time to test out tissues.  And not only for the kids but for the hubby.

If anyone of you women out there are married, have young sons, or even adult sons you will know this.  They may be men – strong and reliable on a regular basis.  But when they are sick, they whine, pout, and are much more sensitive, testy and irritating.  So the wrong tissues can just mess the whole thing up! With that said, I let Alex test them out first (he grabbed the Supreme with Lotion box knowing his nose required extra comfort).  I waited, holding my breath, and his response was “Huh, that actually feels pretty good” as he grabbed his box and went back to bed.

There I stood.  Everyone in the family had their box (except the baby).  Everyone was happy – even the sick hubby.  I was on “White Cloud” Nine that my family had a bit of happiness on their days of misery.

Truth be told, there are many things we love about these tissues.
