Save Money On Groceries!

Save Money on Groceries--Price Match--The Peaceful Mom

Price Match

I mentioned in my last Grocery Saving Tip that I shop multiple stores to purchase the loss leaders, or super sale items, but sometimes I have a limited amount of time and need to shop at one store. That’s when the Walmart Ad Match Guarantee comes in handy.

Simply take the sales flier from any local store into Walmart and they will match any local competitor’s advertised price for the identical item in the ad (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc.) including:

  • Buy one, get one free ads with a specified price (ex: Buy 1 at $2.49, Get one Free)
  • Competitors’ ads that feature a specific item for a specified price
  • Preferred shopping card prices for specific items that are in a printed ad
  • Prices on fresh produce and meat items when the price is offered in the same unit type (lb. for lb.; each for each)

Why It Works

Just like shopping at multiple stores, using the Walmart Ad Match Policy allows you to take advantage of the best sale prices (loss leaders) at various stores, only you save time and gas money because you aren’t driving to several different locations.

There are times,however, when the using the Walmart Ad Match Policy is not the best way to get the lowest price. For example, the local produce stand where I like to shop has phenomenal prices on produce, but no printed ad. Another issue is that discount stores like Save-A-Lot have lower prices than Walmart on lots of staple items, but these items are not listed in the weekly sales flier, so I have to stop by the store to get those items at the lower prices.

Unfortunately, there is no one perfect strategy to always pay the lowest price for your groceries. You will need to track the prices in your area and determine where you can find the lowest price on the items you buy most often, then plan your shopping accordingly. If you do not want to take the time to use multiple strategies, using the Walmart Ad Match Policy is one of the best overall way to save money.

Authentic Mexican Enchiladas--The Peaceful Mom

Authentic Gluten Free Chicken Enchiladas is a post from Contributor Kendra.

Chicken enchiladas are delicious and easy to make. I adapted this recipe to make it gluten free and served it to my fiancé who is Mexican. He absolutely loved them, said they are like his grandmother’s and couldn’t even tell they were gluten free!

Authentic Chicken Enchiladas

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

Yield: 6 servings

Serving Size: 2 enchiladas

Authentic Chicken Enchiladas

Ingredients

  • 1 can of Chipotles in Adobo (you can find this in the Hispanic food section)
  • olive oil
  • 3 large garlic cloves-minced
  • 1/2 cup gluten free flour (I used King Arthur Multi-purpose GF flour)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 32 oz. container of gluten free chicken broth
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 5 cups shredded cooked chicken
  • 12 corn tortillas
  • 1 cup grated cheese
  • red chile pepper flakes (optional)
  • Crema Mexicana for topping (you can find this near the sour cream)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. For the enchilada sauce: Remove 4 chiles from the can of Chipotles in Adobo
  3. Mince the chiles on a cutting board and measure 4 tablespoons of the minced chiles in sauce into a dish and set aside.
  4. Heat a few tablespoons of olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat and add the minced garlic, cook 1 minute till fragrant.
  5. Whisk the minced Chipotles in Adobo, flour, and cumin into the saucepan with the garlic, simmer 1 minute.
  6. Add the chicken broth while whisking, and bring to a boil.
  7. Reduce the pan to a simmer and cook the sauce for 10 minutes, whisking occasionally until the sauce thickens.
  8. Add a few dashes of salt and pepper and remove from heat.
  9. Take 1 cup of the sauce and add it to your shredded cooked chicken and stir to combine.
  10. Pour 1/2 cup of the sauce into the bottom of a large rectangle glass baking dish.
  11. Place your tortillas in the preheating oven for a few minutes until they are hot and flexible (or wrap the tortillas in damp paper towels and heat them in the microwave.)
  12. Fill each tortilla with about 4-6 tablespoons of the chicken mixture, roll it up, and place it in the dish with the seam side down.
  13. Pour all of the remaining sauce on top, and cover with cheese.
  14. Sprinkle the red pepper flakes on the cheese.
  15. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until cheese is melted and sauce is bubbling.
  16. Broil for an additional 2 minutes if desired to brown the cheese.
  17. Allow the enchilladas to cool for about 8 minutes before serving.
  18. Top with Crema Mexicana or sour cream and enjoy!

Notes

Much of this can be done ahead of time, just stop at step 7 and refrigerate the ingredients, or assemble everything and cook right before dinner time! You can also freeze this dish, but make sure to eat it within 3 months.

My Plan For This Week--Get Out Of Bed--The Peaceful Mom

 Just Keepin’ It Real Folks.

Get Organized: Make A Weekly Plan

Each Sunday night I make a plan for the following week, because:

(a) I’ve learned the hard way that if I don’t plan it, it doesn’t get done;

(b) I value my sanity.

That being said, I almost cried when I wrote our schedule into my calendar this week. With my husband and two of my teenagers with jobs outside our home, my weekly plan is now more like a jigsaw puzzle.

So why after writing a post about being Unbusy, am I seemingly being a hypocrite and participating in the busiest summer we have had yet?

I Am Not An ATM

My children like most offspring want stuff. They are less materialistic than some, but they do like new video games and going to the mall on occasion.

We are those crazy parents who think our teenagers should have to work for the “extras”. We provide shelter, food and basic clothing, but contrary to a popular t-shirt, my husband is not an ATM.

We want our teens to be prepared for real life, to understand the word “work” and to comprehend that it means 20-30 hours of hard labor to produce the money for that game system.

 

Jobs Are A Blessing

We know several people who are either out of work themselves, or are trying to find jobs for their teens. We do not take for granted the fact that we have three employed people in our home.

And frankly, it can be a good thing to have your 18 year old son out of the house for a few hours most days of the week (just sayin’).

 

Debt Equals Death

Do I want to spend so much time in the car that I develop “driving elbow”?

For the love of all things decent and deep-fried, NO!

We could make life much “easier” by marching ourselves down to the local used car dealership and signing up for a “no money down, $300/month” car payment–only we won’t.

The hassle of spending so much time in the car is far outweighed by the burden of owing money to someone else, so we will do things the old fashioned way and (gasp!), save money to buy another car.

 

The good news is that life is seasonal. In a few months the summer job will dwindle into a few off-season hours, and life will slow down again. A few months after that we will probably be able to purchase another car, and within a few years those teenagers will be adults and out on their own. There will be plenty of time for sleeping then.

So this week, I will lower my expectations. I will exercise when I can, try to squeeze in a date with my husband and stay peaceful while I drive, drive, drive.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! I hope you have a wonderful day and feel loved and cherished. :)

In other news, have you ever looked up and realized,”Hey, something is wrong here!”? That was me about Wednesday of this past week.

All of the activity since the end of April (trip to Guatemala, business conference, my son’s birthday and graduation, and an out of town wedding) finally caught up with me, so I took some drastic measures.You can read all about  it and how to deal with burnout here.

Because I took a break from the blog for a few days, I did not post my Weekly Grocery Saving Tip. You can read past tips here and we will be back on track for this upcoming week. Thanks for your patience!

 PRODUCE MARKET–Spent $33.74

(items pictured above plus 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts for $7.84)

Money Saving Tip: Check local produce stands and ethnic markets. They often have much lower prices on certain items than chain stores. I picked up a 15 lb bag of potatoes for $3.99 or just $.27 cents a pound, pint grape tomatoes for $1.49 and watermelon for $3.49.

 

Dollar General 2013-06-14

DOLLAR GENERAL --Spent $11.35.  

Money Saving Tip: Check alternate stores for lower prices on staple items.

Early in the week we were in Dollar General to purchase a non-food item and I noticed the grocery section. I was just too tired to handle Walmart that day, so I picked up a few items we needed. The cheese was a little more expensive, but the other items were cheaper than Walmart prices (eggs were $.30 cents cheaper a dozen!). I may add Dollar General to my weekly or biweekly grocery route.

Winn Dixie Meat 2013-06-14

WINN DIXIE–Spent $39.85.

Money Saving Tip: Buy meat at it’s lowest price and freeze it for later. We will use about half this meat this week and the rest will go in the freezer for later. Instead of paying full price for meat when we decide we want it, I save by purchasing the meat at the lowest price for our area, and “shop” my freezer later in the month.

 

Walmart 2013-06-14

WALMART–Spent $42.77.

I did finally make it to Walmart by the end of the week to purchase some items we were out of. There are a few items that are slightly cheaper at Save A Lot, but I wanted to make one stop, so I chose Walmart.

 

Weekly Total: $135.55

June Monthly Total: $302.96   

($125/week budget for six people–$10.55 over for the week, but I was able to buy meat that we will use for a couple of weeks, so hopefully I can keep the budget in line the rest of the month.)
