Ceiling fans can be used to cool down and maintain the temperature of your apartment.

When that summer heat moves into the area, you can be assured that many residents at the The Meadows are definitely considering ways to stay cool by using their ceiling fans. Yet, while this is laudable, it is important to consider setting ceiling fans for summer in the proper way in order to maximize efficiency while they are in use. A slight adjustment will help to improve your energy usage and keep the apartment cooler in the process.

In order to determine which way to set your ceiling fan blades, simply stand beneath the fan after turning it on.  You should feel a cooling effect after setting the blades to turn counterclockwise. As your fan blades turn, the spinning motion will actually create a slight wind-chill effect on your skin from the air circulation.

Since the fan is cooling the apartment, you can make an adjustment with your thermostat which over the hot seasonal months will save you money.

Before you set your fan in motion, check to see that it is set to rotate its blades in a counterclockwise motion.

Space: Make a “gardening area” on your balcony, if you are really going to commit to the prospect. Give yourself plenty of room to spread out and then this area be your green haven.

Use: It’s also important to use what you plant and to plant what you will use. Herbs, small plants, or even bigger things like tomato vines can have success with the right amount of work and luck.

Tools: Keep all your tools at the ready. Make sure you have bigger pots to put your fast growing plants in and do your best to keep all your plants alive for a full growing season.

The amazing thing about fishing in Memphis is that there are tons of lakes, rivers, streams, and reservoirs to choose from. With your fishing license and equipment, you can go just about anywhere and get some great catches for a day.

Here are our three favorite places to fish in the area.

• Bayou Gayoso has the best fishing times from 7:15-9:15am and 11:48am-1:48pm.

• Round Pond near Eagle Lake has public access with the same good fishing times as Bayou Gayoso.

• Memphis Union Mission Lake off of Circle road has the best fishing times from 7:15-9:15am and 11:47am-1:47pm.

Catches include crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, lake trout, white bass, blue catfish, flathead catfish, and many more fresh water fish native to the Southeast. The best bait will vary depending on what you’re trying to catch. We recommend Bass Pro on Macon Road for all your bait and tackle needs.

• Adoption process. The Humane Society of Memphis’s adoption process includes filling out an application form and undergoing a screening process, to ensure the kitty or dog you want matches your lifestyle. For example, renters must show that their complex allows pets.

• Pets available. View the pets ready for adoption on the Humane Society’s website and learn a little about the lovable animals the shelter has to offer. All pets are spayed/neutered, have up-to-date shots and heart worm treatment, and have been micro-chipped.

Fill your ears with sweet melodic sounds at The Sunset Symphony.

Memphis is an exciting musical town, with a rich history in Rock n’ Roll that residents of The Meadows appreciate and treasure.  So when music festivals in Memphis arrive, there is always a tremendous amount of interest generated.  One particular music festival which promises to be top shelf is the Sunset Symphony on May 25. This is truly a show that the whole family will enjoy!

With the Symphony Orchestra performing in the city’s downtown on the lovely banks of the Mississippi River, you can just soak in the beauty of the glorious sunset and musical performance.

This is truly the fitting tribute and grand finale to what continues to be a wonderful celebration of Memphis during the May International Festival.  You should get your tickets early from Ticketmaster.  Any child under six is allowed in free.

After the concert, stay around for the exciting fireworks show to follow!  So, bring the entire family to a wonderful musical event everyone will love.
