However, during this latest economic downturn, these normal “stresses” have become a source of constant anxiety, frustration, and hopelessness for many. It doesn’t take long for those emotions to pile up and sink the happiest of us into a deep depression.

Depression is widespread in the United States, and its symptoms can interfere with every aspect of its sufferers’ day-to-day lives. Countless sufferers do not seek the treatment they need due to limited access to health care or other financial constraints. No one should suffer the pain of depression, or any other mental health disorder or illness, alone. Below you will find many free or inexpensive resources available for those seeking treatment for depression or other mental health disorders. Even if you personally don’t need these, chances are high that someone close to you does.

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) – Many employers offer EAPs as a benefit to part-time and full-time employees. While specific benefits vary with employer, most generally include a free counseling session and applicable referrals for a wide range of additional resources, including financial advisors, child care specialists, and the like. Confidentiality laws also vary from state to state, but the identity of EAP users typically remains confidential to employers. Contact your employer’s Human Resources Department to find out whether you have an EAP available to you.

U.S. Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) – This federal agency’s web site has a wealth of information that sufferers can review in their own home. Most importantly, the site offers an online treatment locator and phone numbers for 24/7 assistance. SAMHSA’s web site also has a number of publications available for free or nominal cost that discuss various disorders, their symptoms, and treatment options.

National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) – The mental health division of the National Institute of Health’s web site features general fact sheets on a number of psychological conditions and disorders. It also features links to a database of free and low-cost mental health care providers as well as information about current clinical trials for those interested in participating.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – This organization’s web site provides a wealth of resources for members of the general public, including support group look-ups and lawyer referrals. It also contains specific pages tailored to the needs of mental health consumers, veterans, students, and children/adolescents. Visitors can also look up their state or local NAMI chapter and contact them directly for more location-specific resources.

Campus Counseling Services – Are you a student? If so, chances are high that you have free counseling available to you on campus. While browsing my alma mater’s Counseling & Psychological Services web site, I found that they offer crisis intervention, assessment, part-time psychiatry, short-term psychotherapy, and various workshops, all for free. Contact your college or university’s Student Affairs or Health Center for more information about what types of free services you may qualify for as a student.

Military Resources – If you are in the military or a military dependent, you have ample mental health and free financial resources available to you. More information about available resources can be found at these links: Air Force Suicide Prevention, Army Behavioral Health, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, Navy & Marine Corps Public Health Center.

Aisle Layouts Increase Customer Spending
Store layouts are often the same across the country: produce near the entrance; dairy, eggs, bakery, seafood, and meat products along the sides; and packaged, canned, and processed food in the center aisles. Why do stores do this? The answer comes down to higher profits. Shoppers simply buy more when they have to go through the middle aisles to get to the fresh goods they need. Once stores get customers in a center aisle, they are much more likely to visit other middle aisles and be influenced to buy items that are not on their list or on sale.

What You Can Do
To counter this, shop around the edges of the store. First fill your cart with fresh produce, dairy and protein products, and bread. This will leave less room in the cart for expensive impulse buys. The important lesson is to stick to your list, only buy the packaged items you will use that are on sale, and stay mainly in the outer aisles. When you are finished with the perimeter and your list, make a beeline to checkout, thus avoiding the temptation to “just shop around.”

Here are the steps to get your Free Restaurant.com gift card:

You will then receive a text message with an app to download.
Click it and download it.
Once you have done your first “Walk-in” to a partner store, your Restaurant.com gift card will be dropped into your Shopkick account. The easiest partner stores to find are Best Buy, Old Navy, Target and Crate & Barrel. That being said, all stores that are participating can be found very easily on your phone.

What’s a “Walk-in”? You will receive kicks just for walking in a partner store. Just open the Shopkick app at the entrance of a partner store (like Best Buy or Target) and walk inside. A green bubble will pop up and let you know you’ve collected the kicks.

What are “Kicks”? Kicks are the loyalty points you get from using Shopkick. Once you collect enough, you can trade them for gift cards, Facebook points and lots of other rewards. Travel Insurance: Does it Make Sense for You?

It seems wherever you turn these days someone is trying to sell you insurance. When you buy a car, you need auto insurance. Buying a boat? Don’t forget the boat insurance. Traveling is no different. It’s a rare travel agent or reservations agent that doesn’t at least mention travel insurance. But, do you really need it? What kind should you buy? Are there ways to save money? Below is a primer on what you need to know about travel insurance to make sure you get the most for your dollar:

Types of Travel Insurance?

The term “travel insurance” covers a myriad of products. There’s insurance to protect you if you have to cancel your trip (for certain, covered reasons), insurance for your family if you are in an airplane accident, and insurance to cover medical expenses when you’re out of the country.

Trip Cancellation Insurance. Trip cancellation insurance is offered by most cruise and tour companies as well as independent suppliers like TravelGuard and AIG. Most policies allow you to cancel only for specified reasons, such as a health emergency or a death in the family. Some policies also include work-related issues and loss of employment.

Travel Accident Insurance. Flight insurance, or travel accident insurance, pays your heirs a set amount should you be killed in a plane accident. This is rarely a good investment as the odds of your dying in a single airline crash are infinitesimal. It’s most often wiser to beef up your regular life insurance policy that will cover you no matter how you die.

Travel Medical Insurance. Many people don’t realize that most American health insurance policies don’t cover you if you should fall ill or have an accident outside of the United States. That includes Medicare and Medicaid. Medical travel insurance covers an individual or family for a set period of time in a finite set of countries. Most medical travel insurance policies do not cover pre-existing conditions (that is, illnesses resulting from a condition with which you’ve already been diagnosed, like heart disease or diabetes.) Some policies also exclude winter or extreme sports.
Car rental insurance. Car rental collision damage waivers and liability insurance are sold by car rental agencies and cover you should you be in an accident with their rental car. Many regular car insurance policies (for your own vehicle) and some credit card companies already provide you with this insurance. Car rental insurance is a good idea if you don’t have a car at home or if you are renting a car substantially more expensive than the vehicle you own.

Ways to Save on Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can be expensive, but there are ways to hold down the cost. Here are just a few to consider:

1. Don’t duplicate coverage. Don’t pay twice for coverage. For instance, if your credit card company offers car rental insurance, decline the coverage from the car rental agency. Similarly, if the trip cancellation insurance that you purchase from the tour operator or cruise company includes medical and/or life insurance, don’t purchase separate policies for those items.

2. Don’t automatically buy insurance from your travel supplier. Often, the coverage offered by your cruise company, travel agency or tour operator is the least expensive option, but not always. Be sure to compare the cost of this insurance with an independent supplier, such as TravelGuard or AIG.

3. Don’t buy trip cancellation insurance if your package is totally (or mostly) refundable. It sounds obvious, but make sure that you won’t automatically get your money back if you have to cancel your trip before you buy trip cancellation insurance. Not all vacations are nonrefundable.

Is Travel Insurance Really Necessary?

Whether you decide to purchase travel insurance is, like any insurance purchase, an individual decision. Everyone’s family and circumstances are different. To some, it may offer peace of mind; to others, it’s a waste of money. Whatever you decide, make sure to educate yourself about the cost and benefits of any policy you consider as well as the penalties involved with canceling your trip at the last minute, should that be necessary.

Innovative Ways Coffee Grounds Can Save You Money

Every morning use to be the same routine. I’d make a pot of coffee, drink it, and clean out the coffee machine. I’d flip open the lid of the trash can, and throw away the coffee filter full of rich coffee grounds. One day my husband suggested that I throw it in my compost pile! So I did and saw what a difference it made to my plants. I got to thinking, if coffee grounds can do wonders for my plants, what else could they do wonders on? It turns that there are tons of uses for coffee grounds I had never known about!

Kill fridge odor - If your fridge is full of foul odors, place a bowl of fresh, unused coffee grounds inside and leave it for a day or two. The coffee will absorb the odors and leave your fridge smelling fresh. You can save around $4 a month!
Reduce cellulite - Pricey cellulite creams have one major ingredient in common: caffeine, which enhances fat metabolism, reducing the appearance of these fatty pockets under the skin. To make your own coffee cellulite treatment at home, mix warm used coffee grounds with coconut oil and rub it onto your skin in circular motions for a few minutes before rinsing. Average cellulite creams from your local drugstore can run as much as $20.00 a jar.
Reduce fireplace mess - Wait until the embers are cool, sprinkle damp coffee grounds all over the ashes, let them sit for about 15 minutes, and scoop out the mess into a metal ash can. The coffee grounds cling to the ashes, so they don’t spew as much dust. The monetary savings here vary, but you will be saving yourself time.
Repel ants - Sprinkle dry, used coffee grounds in problem areas where you notice ants. To tackle huge ant mounds, pour an entire pot of brewed coffee right on the mound. The cost of ant traps can be around $8.00 a package, plus they are toxic and harmful to pets.

This method not only saves you money but is safer on your hair.
Make your own natural dye - The natural pigments in coffee make it a great natural dye for fabric, paper, Easter eggs and even your hair. Just allow a strong brew to cool, then saturate whatever it is you are trying to dye with the mixture. Dyes can run anywhere from $4.00-$10.00 depending on brand.
Fertilize plants - Acid-loving plants will thank you for sprinkling your used coffee grounds around their roots. Azaleas, blueberry shrubs and rhododendrons are just a few of the plants that flourish when treated with coffee, thanks to all those nutrients. You can also dilute the leftover coffee in your mug and pour it right into your potted plants. Fertilizer at your local home store can cost as much as $5.00 per pound.
Keep cats out of your garden - Sprinkle used coffee grounds on the soil, and cats will want nothing to do with it. Products that promise the same performance can cost as much as $10.00 at home supply stores!
Scrub surfaces - Mildly abrasive, coffee grounds are great for scrubbing surfaces like cooking ranges and refrigerators. Use them alone or mix them with a little dish soap. Even store brand kitchen scrub can cost as much as $3.00 a bottle.
Repel fleas - Rub used, damp coffee grounds through your pet’s fur after bathing to repel fleas. Everyone with pets knows how expensive flea repellants can be. Even a simple flea collar can cost upwards of $5.00.
Secret recipe ingredient - Just a little hint of coffee can put a unique flavor into foods like chili and chocolate cake. Use a little bit as a marinade for steaks, and not only will it make them tender, it’ll also provide a hint of deep, smoky flavor.
Repair furniture scratches - Scratches on wood furniture disappear almost instantly by simply rubbing in a little bit of instant coffee dampened into a paste with hot water. Repeat if necessary until the scratch matches the surrounding wood. Products like this can cost as much as $10.00!
