Walt Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Productions have provided us with these ‘fun facts’ from their upcoming release, The Lone Ranger (July 3, 2013), starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger, a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American warrior Tonto (Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

The Lone Ranger releases in 2013, exactly 80 years after the character first made its way onto the airwaves courtesy of WXYZ radio in Detroit, Michigan, on January 30, 1933. And coincidentally, Detroit is the city in which producer Jerry Bruckheimer was born and raised!

Two background players attired in period costume for the Wild West Exhibition sequence were Ann Simon and her 10-year-old daughter Jenna Jewell Simon, respectively the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of James Jewell, who directed the very first broadcast of ‘The Lone Ranger’ radio series on January 30, 1933, and many thereafter.

The creation of The Lone Ranger’s mask required much trial and error from Joel Harlow’s makeup department, with ten different designs and seven fittings with actor Armie Hammer. The final version was vacuum-formed over Hammer’s face, and was made of very soft goatskin leather.

The film’s visual consultant Mark ‘Crash’ McCreery was so hands-on that he hand-carved the Native American petroglyphs that adorn the wooden frame around Old Tonto’s diorama in the Wild West Exhibition tent, and personally painted symbols on the walls of a 200-foot-long train tunnel that he designed, which was built in Creede, Colorado.

To bring his and Gore Verbinski’s physical world of The Lone Ranger to life, visual consultant Mark ‘Crash’ McCreery’s art department staff was composed of six art directors, eleven set designers, two illustrators, a scenic artist, multiple storyboard artists, two graphic designers, two model makers, a research coordinator, an art department production assistant and 274 members of the construction team.

Representatives from both the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire were out in full force this morning as LEGO virtually transformed New York City’s Times Square into Yavin IV to unveil the world’s largest LEGO sculpture. Consisting of 5,335,200 LEGO bricks and weighing in at a svelte 45,980 pounds, the full-scale LEGO X-wing Starfighter arrived with much fanfare. Built in the LEGO model shop in Kladno, Czech Republic, the 1:1 replica of LEGO kit 9493 took 32 builders 17,336 hours to construct. Its true 1:1 scale means it measures 11 feet in height, 43 feet in length and has an impressive wingspan of 44 feet. In addition, the cockpit can fit an actual ‘pilot’ (serving as a photo-op during the three day event).

The X-wing is stationed in Times Square through Saturday, where it serves as an ambassador for the new animated series, ‘The Yoda Chronicles,’ debuting May 29 on Cartoon Network at 8:00 pm ET (a special follows at 9 pm, covering the big reveal).

‘Just as kids love to test and hone their LEGO building skills and imaginative storytelling, our LEGO Master Builders are always testing their creative skills to top their last larger-than-life sized creations,’ said Michael McNally, Brand Relations Director for LEGO Systems. ‘The size and structural complexity of a freestanding model 42 times the size of one our retail sets was a challenge they could not resist.’ The sculpture had to be engineered to withstand transportation, assembly/dis-assembly, resting above the New York City subway system and even earthquakes as it will be on display at Legoland California from June 15, 2013 through the end of the year.

While visitors can board the X-wing for a photo-op, other activities include: photo-ops with life-size LEGO Star Wars figures including Yoda, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2; participate in free building classes with a LEGO master builder; make and take home a mini-X-wing; and check out a display of ‘The Yoda Chronicles’ LEGO sets. Visitors can also claim a goodie-bag which contains a commemorative double-sided poster, mini-magazine/comic book which includes articles and 2013 Star Wars mini-fig checklist and more. Additionally, a special commemorative edition of the 9493 X-wing Starfighter LEGO set is available exclusively at the Toys ‘R’ Us in Times Square for $74.99 which includes a limited edition Yoda ‘NY I (heart)’ mini-fig through Saturday or while supplies last.

The event is open to the public from 10:00 am through 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.

For one night only, two of the world’s most celebrated songwriters and composers will take to the stage for ‘Richard M. Sherman and Alan Menken: The Disney Songbook.’ The concert will take place at the D23 Expo 2013 at the Anaheim Convention Center in the D23 Expo Arena on Saturday, August 10.

Together Sherman and Menken have won a combined 10 Academy Awards for their work with Disney, and have composed music and songs for more than three dozen Disney feature films, over two dozen Disney Park attractions and half a dozen Disney musicals on Broadway.

‘I can’t express how excited I am that my esteemed friend Alan Menken and I will be sharing the same bill for the very first time,’ said Sherman. ‘Alan is an incredible talent, and I know we’re both thrilled to be performing for Disney’s most ardent fans — they’re the best and I can’t wait to be a part of what promises to be a very special night for all of us.’

‘Richard Sherman and I share so many things; our cherished association with The Walt Disney Company, the blessing of having the opportunity to share our musical talents with “children of all ages” and a genuine mutual admiration — but one thing we’ve never gotten to share is a concert stage,’ said Menken. ‘This summer at the D23 Expo 2013, we will do just that. ABC Family has added another original series to its roster of original programming that will premiere this summer. “Spell-Mageddon” is an hour game show where contestants take on hilarious distractions while spelling increasingly challenging words.

“Spell-Mageddon,” which takes a traditional spelling bee to a whole new level, is created and Executive-Produced by Adam Reed, Adam Freeman and Leslie Greif of Thinkfactory Media. Additional Executive Producers are Jeff Krask and Michael Canter. It will join ABC Family’s Wednesday night comedy line-up on Wednesday July 24th at 9pm following “Melissa and Joey” and “Baby Daddy.”

Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the (r)Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

After formally shutting down its Insidears website earlier this year, Walt Disney World has been quietly testing a new open community/ratings website, we have learned. The website, which can be found quiet easily at http://disneyworld.com/reviews (or http://reviews.disneyworld.disney.go.com) uses the Bazaarvoice platform to allow anyone with a Disney.com account to connect and share their own personal reviews of Walt Disney World attractions, dining and lodging as well as ask and respond to questions in the community.

In its current incarnation, when you first enter a review, question or response, you will be prompted to choose a community screenname as well as fill out a brief form which helps provide additional information to other readers: family size, number of children, last vacation date and length, etc. You can also choose to identify yourself as a Disney Vacation Club member, an Annual Passholder and even a Disney Cast Member (an additional badge is provided for members of the Disney Parks Moms Panel). With exception to the screenname, this information can be modified with each post to help keep things current.
