A few years ago, when money was tight and making handcrafted Christmas gifts seemed like the way to go, I started making hand-painted, door-hanging snowmen for my family and friends. They were well-received and friends of friends started placing orders. That snowballed into Barn Owl Primitives {BOP}, and a little shop on Etsy was born.  Since snowmen eventually melt, I needed to add some things to my shop that would last all year. I started with You are My Sunshine and Family Rules typography word art signs.

Things were slow at first, but after months of marketing my shop on facebook and building relationships with fellow shop owners and bloggers, I started to see some steady sales.

But by far the orders that I am most proud of are from people you’ve never heard of. The daughter who purchased a sign for her dad’s 70th birthday with all the sayings he’s been repeating to her for the last 46 years. The mother who allowed me to see and paint the special and private poem that she repeats to her autistic son each night before he goes to sleep. The grandmother who ordered my Strength of My Love sign for her granddaughter, who spent almost a year in the NICU before finally coming home. My friend who lost her 12-year-old son to an unthinkable accident during a flood. These are just a few of the accomplishments that I am the most proud of and the ones that make what I do so rewarding and worthwhile.

I’m Sumo, from Sumo’s Sweet Stuff, and I’m so excited to be visiting you today!

Hosting a party? Here is a fun treat you can use for any kind of graduation party-  Graduation Pops

Chocolate Caramel Cake

1 Chocolate Cake mix (German Chocolate or Devil’s Food works great)
1 – 14 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
1 – 12 ounce jar of caramel ice cream topping
1 – 8 ounce container of frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 chocolate candy bar to make chocolate curls

Bake cake in a 9″ X 13″ pan according to package directions. Remove cake from oven and immediately poke holes in the cake with a skewer or large meat fork. Pour sweetened condensed milk over the cake. Allow milk to soak in a bit, then pour caramel ice cream topping over the cake. Cool cake completely. Frost cake with whip topping and decorate with chocolate curls.

Grab yourself some Miracle-Gro potting soil,  acrylic paint, paint brushes, Sharpie marker,  Thompson Water Sealer, acrylic sealer, a flower pot and grass seed (or a plant).

Give the entire pot a couple of coats of Thompson WaterSealer inside and out. This will keep the paint from bubbling away from the pot. You must seal the pot or the paint won’t stick.

Let the painting begin! Bella decided to do a self portrait for her pot!

A Sharpie marker is an easy way to add details like eyelashes.

Once the paint is completely dry give it a coat of  acrylic sealer to protect the painting.

Now it is time to plant! Place a  small rock in the bottom of the pot to keep the potting soil from  falling through the hole in the bottom.

Fill the pot completely with soil if planting grass seed. If using a  plant fill the pot with the potting soil, add the plant then fill in around the plant with more potting soil. Water and set pot in the sun.

Be sure to keep watering the  grass and soon the flower pot person will have hair! A little washi tape or ribbon can give your person a bow for their ‘hair’.
