The Road to Ellis is Paved with Good Inventions

Over on Bendis Board, Warren Ellis is all in a tizzy because he can't decide what Marvel project he wants to write next. He considers himself:

the mad scientist in the basement, bringing old properties back to life. The job isn't to create new things (and I do that elsewhere, I don't have to prove my bona fides at creating new books), but to make the old properties live again. And I'm hitting the point where I can't find anything to get up on its feet.

What do you say gang, any hot tips for Warren? What long-buried character do you want to see given the modern go around?

Adam X? Guardians of the Galaxy? Warlock?

1. Canadian television in the early 90's was crazy. This from the Fans episode of a show called Prisoners of Gravity circa 1992. I grew up in Upstate NY near the Canadian border so I can attest to the awesome variety and weirdness of the TV that slipped across the border. Oh Canada anyone?

2. Garth Ennis has an awesome accent

Comic Book Club w/ Josh Bernstein and Jeff "Jahfurry" Newelt Pics

We hadn't seen the guys since San Diego Comic Con, so we caught up and talked about their current Royal Flush Magazine project as well as Jeff's Heeb Magazine project. During the Stack the conversation about X-Men drifted to a talk about humping in comics (be sure to check it out on the podcast, yikes!). Something about Scott Summers and the White Queen I think.

Comic Book Club w/ Tom Breevort and Wyatt Cenac Pics

It finally happened. Tom Breevort finally made it to Comic Book Club (after two reschedulings no less!) with him was Wyatt Cenac of The Daily Show. Tom talked about the editorial process, particularly Fantastic Four #559, which he currently works on (which we reviewed on the show last week). Wyatt talked about the unusual circumstances he finds himself in now that he's doing The Daily Show, and the twists and turns his life has taken the last year leading up to getting the job. An interesting discussion about Hellen Killer (see, you read the title and go "WTF") Wyatt let us know about his idea for Billy "Dee" Killiams. Better rush that to print or Wyatt will beat you.

In case you missed this week's awesome edition of Comic Book Club Live we've just posted pictures of the melee. This week's show featured Arvid Nelson (Rex Mundi), Jesse Falcon (Marvel Toys), and James Asmus (X-Men: Manifest Destiny). These three guests brought a lot of energy to the room. Jesse talked about Marvel's upcoming toy releases including some awesome Spider-Man and Iron Man 3 quarter figures. James Asmus openly admitted that Alex, Justin, and Pete were responsible for his job writing for Marvel. Arvid talked about his experiences trying to survive in the difficult world of indy comics. Joss Whedon has hit it big on the internet. He won multiple Eisner Awards (Best New Series: Buffy Season 8 and Best Digital Comic: Sugarshock!) at this year's San Diego Comic Con, set the internet ablaze with his Dr. Horrible Web-Series, and Now he's at it again with Serenity: The Other Half. I can only he assumes of the "other half" of the only stuff we have to check out online, leaving room for all our friends at Zuda (The Timothy Brothers and Neil Kleid) and Act-I-Vate (Joe Infurnari, Kevin Colden, and Molly Crabapple & John Leavitt) of course.

Firefly is a great example of a series that has been kept alive by the fans. What do you think about this? I'm not the Joss Whedon mega-fan that Alex is, but I do know a great universe of characters when I see it. When I read the story about how the cast stayed at a Browncoats convention even after it had been cancelled it just proved to me that the creative team behind the series cared about their fans. Joss Whedon has done the same thing with Buffy. The network pulls the rug out from under him, and he ressurects the universe online then proceeds to win an Eisner for his efforts.

Obviously there are a lot of other creative people involved and Joss Whedon is just the man at front of the line, but what do you think? What other series tv/film/comic book do you think deserve the same treatment as Buffy and Firefly?

Spoiler. I love that Marvel has that first page recap. For comics that come out monthly it is a great reminder of what is happening in the world of this comic. Plus they decided to give us a map. Which gives us a better idea of what Sakaar looks like. Also it gives us more information about what is happening. That way they don’t have to waste valuable panels, when we could be watching Skaar kill dragons. OK even I have to admit I was a little upset when Skaar killed the last dragon. I am very excited about this comic; there is so much they can do with the son of Hulk. What would you do? I think eventually Skaar and The Hulk are going to have to face off. What are your thoughts on Skaar?

Spoiler. Well-done Mr. Butcher. Thus comic does a fantastic good of creating it’s own world and setting up a cool detective type story. The only criticism I have is that they showed the gorilla too much before he opened the cage. One panel was enough. But this comic did a great job of coming all the way back around to the beginning. The art is really good. So if you like a little who done it story, with some mysticism thrown in. You will like this comic. Thoughts on this arc or comic?

And while we're talking Neil Gaiman: Over at his blog he posted this little bit about why he got a special thanks in the Watchmen collected edition:

I remember Alan ringing me up when he was writing Watchmen #3, and said, "Neil, you're an educated bloke. Where does the quote `Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?' come from? I think someone said it when they were dying, but I don't know when."

I went out, and found it for him, rang him back, and said, "No. It's
Genesis. God threatening to nuke Sodom and Gomorrah." He said, "Thanks", then
went off.He rang me back a few months later and said, "Neil, I haven't any
quotes for the titles of #7 and #8. This is what happens in them, go find me a
quote." So I went off and got him "Brother to dragons, and companion to owls..."
from Job for #7, and the poem for #8, Eleanor Farjeon's "Hallowe'en". "On
Hallowe'en the old ghosts come."Also, while I was researching the Old Testament
stuff, I was working my way through a huge Biblical concordance, getting various
details. It fell open to a page on obscure history, and the name Rameses jumped
out at me. I discovered this quote that said, roughly, "I've killed all these
places, and left the widows weeping there. Everything is at peace, and
everything is great in the world." So I rang up Alan, and said, "What do you
think of this?" He said "Great! I'll stick it in #12" So you've got Ozymandias
quoting Rameses in Watchmen. (ED: #12, Pg. 20)

Wonder Woman DVD Trailer

Check it out, Amazons: Yahoo! Movies has posted the trailer for the upcoming Wonder Woman Direct to DVD movie from Warner Bros. Have a look at it and then stay tuned to Pulp Secret for an interview with Bruce Timm and director Lauren Montgomery(Superman Doomsday)!

In Wonder Woman, the fourth animated DVD movie from Warner Bros. and DC Comics, Keri Russell (Felicity) voices Princess Diana, the Amazonian superhero.

The movie tells Diana's origin story, and reportedly is based on the 1987 George Perez-helmed comic revamp that pitted Wonder Woman against god of war Ares.

"This story is funny and action-packed and adult in a nice way," said Russell. "Then they said Nathan Fillion was playing opposite me, and that made it that much better."

"Playing second fiddle to Keri is a wonderful fiddle to play," said Fillion, who co-starred with Russell in the 2007 indie film Waitress. "I've done it before, I'll do it again--quite happily."

Fillion (Serenity), who previously voiced the fan favorite Vigilante in two episodes of Justice League Unlimited, here plays Air Force pilot Steve Trevor, who crash lands on the Amazon island. "What I like about Steve Trevor is that he's a very real guy. He's very honest and he's very natural. He doesn't apologize for much. And he's about as normal as a guy can be while hanging out with Wonder Woman."

Russell and Fillion are supported by Virginia Madsen (Justice League) as Diana's mother, Queen Hippolyta; Rosario Dawson (Sin City) as Amazon rival Artemis, who briefly wore the WW mantle in the 90s comic series; and Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2) as Ares. Composer Christopher Drake (Batman: Gotham Knight) will be providing at least some of the score.

Spoiler. This is a cool comic. Rick Remender writes a fun book here. Who knew Theodore Roosevelt was such a bad ass? This is a look into the past and the fact that Theo ran with the dark riders. (It could be true?) I really like the idea of this. Mix some history, with some aliens; some giant snakes, and of course one bad motha… shut yo mouth. I am just talking about Theodore Roosevelt. These one shots have been all over the place, but this comic is kind of like a lighter Hellboy. Especially the way it is drawn. I highly recommend picking this comic up. What do you think?

Spoiler. OK I think at this point, we should all understand that there is nothing worse than a cocky motivational speaker. I am looking at you Little Miss Sunshine. Yes, in this comic and that movie. A motivation speaker bites off more than he can chew. Well maybe not Little Miss Sunshine as much as this comic, but why would you mess with Two-Face? Seriously this comic is great! I really like the idea of dissecting the idea that the line between being a good guy and a bad guy was a thin line for Two-Face. They touched upon that in The Batman Movie. This comic does a better job. So did you read it? What do you think of this run of Joker Asylum one shots?

New Watchmen Posters

Warner Brothers has just posted some new movie posters for Watchmen. They were even nice enough to post high res versions. I'll say they were really promoting this movie hardcore at Comic Con last week. Everyone at the DC Booth (the employees) were wearing Watchmen T-shirts (which everyone wanted), and they even had the Owl Ship which will be featured in an upcoming Popular Mechanics article.

Has anyone read the article recently about how the visual style of Zach Snyder's Watchmen will differ from that of his former colleague Frank Miller's The Spirit? It talks about the difference between the comic book graphical representation of life in Frank Miller's films (Sin City, 300, The Spirit) versus the true-to-life graphical representation of Alan Moore's Watchmen. Because Watchmen has been made with incredible attention to Alan Moore's canon, Snyder avoided using the camera techniques that Frank Miller uses to simulate comic book reality on the big screen. I think this isn't necessarily a good thing or a bad thing. I do think that Snyder and Miller are both trying to represent their material in the best possible way.

What do you think? Do you like the comic book appearance of Frank Miller's films, or do you prefer more realistic environments in movies?

Spoiler. Wow, big moves. Things are really heating up in this book. Snipers, mystery, and dudes named Big Ben. Man this is a great book! How do you not love this book? Man I lost it when Dakota was shot. It is an interesting situation; I think what makes me like comics so much, well one of the many reasons. Is the moral fiber that the superheroes have and live by. As well as some of the moral fiber that the other characters have. I mean if my life was threatened while I was doing my day job. I don’t know if I would continue to do the right thing. But they do. It is something to admire and look up to, even if it is in a comic book.

How long does it take to get over a serious case of sensory overload? All I can do right now is sit and stare at my coffee cup. Some highlights from the con, personal and comic book related:

- Meeting James Robinson and talking to him about Starman. Stay tuned for the interview.

-Listening to Grant Morrison talk about how were all one organism. Some day we'll look back on this time as right before Grant became the diety of a new religion called Scottish Mumbling Buddhism.

- Jeph Loeb's assault of compliments for The Stack.

- Hearing that JMS will be bringing back the Archie/Impact heroes back in Brave and the Bold. Must buy.

- Drunkenly telling Jim Lee that he was 'The King of San Diego' at an after party.

-Learning that Gabriel Rodriguez, artist of Lock and Key, is god damn charming at our Comic Book Club panel.

- Toasting the Newsarama Eisner win with champagne. Then beer. Then Jack Daniels.

- Seeing the last ever Comedians of Comedy show and then going to the after party.

- And most importantly, meeting and greeting Stack fans young and old. Thanks so much guys!

What a crazy trip it has been. So lets talk Con. Who went, and what was your favorite thing that you saw? I saw footage of the Web Series Grant Morrison is working on, it looks crazy good. I saw tons of cool stuff in artist alley. The bonus footage of Punisher War Zone put to heavy Metal music was a ton-o-fun. I wasn’t blown away by the trailer as much as the bonus footage. I think Comic Con does a good job rewarding the fans. Yes it is expensive with bad food, but there is so much to do and see. You get to meet and talk to the people who create what you enjoy. Thanks Comic Con.

Jeph Loeb Gives Pete the hug he richly deserves

We just got back from the biggest gathering of sequential artist and fans on the planet. All I can say is that it was so unbelievable my brain exploded...every day. Not only did we spend every moment of the days talking with all the greatest comic creators in the world, we also partied with them every night. All I can say is The Hyatt sure does know how to throw down for comic book after-parties. There was the time Alex cried because he couldn't get to Joss Whedon before he left one of our many after-parties, the time Justin bogarted Matt Brady's Eisner Award (congratulaitions to our partner in crime!), and the time Pete actually got a few of his birthday wishes (I'll let him tell you which ones).

There are so many stories it will take forever for all of us to tell them. Be sure to check back on the blog regularly for the crazier ones. In the meantime enjoy the pictures on our flickr account!

Neil Gaiman to Write Batman Story

Author Neil Gaiman just released that he is currently writing a two-part Batman story called "What Ever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" which artist Andy Kubert (1602), will be drawing. Gaiman was very cryptic but did let out that the two issues would both be over-sized. Part one is set for a January 2009 release. What do you all think of this? Obviously Neil Gaiman swings for the fences every time and is something of a genre storytelling home-run king. I can't say enough good things about him, and I can't believe I didn't see him in San Diego this year. I guess we'll all just have to wait to hear more till he's finished writing the story.

As our buddies (Now Eisner-Winning Buddies!) at Newsarama pointed out, the title is a reference to Alan Moore's Superman issue titled "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" In which Moore closed the book on the Silver Age Superman and got the character ready for a re-boot by then-upcoming Superman writer John Byrne. Does this mean Superman is in a state of metamorphosis. Obviously the answer is yes, but

Good day! Well it's day two of the San Diego Comic-Con and we have been busy as hell talking to anyone and everyone on the con floor. This is the Stack's second year at the Con, and though everyone is murmuring about Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton grabbing some of the spotlight, it's still a fantastic show. The floor layout this year keeps all of the movie and tv hype-machines away from the comic booths, so it's not nearly as clogged as it was last year. The booths this year, large and small, are set up for maximum fan/creator interaction, from the sleeker Marvel and DC booths, to IDW, Image, Devil's Due, Oni, we've met so many people.

Some things you can look forward to: a long, really funny chat with Jeph Loeb about all of his comic book work, catching up with our man Tim Seeley, a look into Peter David's work, exclusive announcements from Jeff Parker and C.B. Cebulski, a sit-down with Brian Lee O'Malley and a dream come true for me, talking to Starman and current Superman writer James Robinson!

Until then though I'll be sipping Dos Equis and talking the talk on the con floor!

Wow It is a crazy good time here. First off, we saw Tropic Thunder. It is a silly, kind of racist, funny ass good time! But I wanted to give a teaser of what you nice people can look forward to seeing. We had a really fun interview with Jeph Leob. We did a panel with Greatest American Hero! I saw footage of Punisher War Zone put to heavy Metal music!! It is gonna be dark, and it is gonna kick so much ass!!!! Don't read Justin's blog he smells. He needs a shower. No you can read it, but he does smell.

Spoiler. Hey Moon Knights doesn’t suck. Moon Knight has turned me off lately. Yes he is fighting giant werewolves, but at least he is not talking to that dead guy in this comic. I wasn’t really into the Moon Knight being crazy or the talking to a dead guy no one else sees. This comic is a back to basis Moon Knight. I am excited for the Moon Knight to be a better comic. Look, there's been a lot of coverage already of this morning's announcement in the NY Times about Robert Kirkman's appointment as a partner at Image Comics. However, they seem to be missing the most important point... I was quoted in the article as if I'm some sort of expert:

The founders, including Erik Larsen, Jim Lee and Jim Valentino, were likened to rock stars by Alexander Zalben, a regular reviewer of comics on PulpSecret.com as well as the host of the onstage New York talk show “Comic Book Club.” “You weren’t reading Spawn, you were reading Todd McFarlane’s Spawn and Rob Liefeld’s Youngblood,” Mr. Zalben said in an e-mail message.

Today the company is still “the Marvel-DC alternative, with books like Invincible, but they’re more about offering high-quality comics by up-and-coming creators that offer an alternative to the mainstream,” Mr. Zalben wrote.

Spoiler. Wow, this is a great comic. Creepy, weird, and yet a really good time. The art is amazing, really pulls you into this world. So in this issue you get a clearer picture of what is happening, and it ain’t pretty. What I liked about this issue is that John couldn’t really save the day, but he could make it a little better. It is a lot different than most books out there. John isn’t perfect but he tries. I can get behind that. You should definitely pick up this issue. Also you should give second thoughts to joining a band. (Makes sense if you read the comic.) So Constantine fans out there? How about the movie? Personally I liked it. I didn’t mind Keanu Reeves in the Constantine movie, which is weird for me.

Spoiler. OK So I was wrong about Tiny Titans. This is a fun silly comic. Plus they put a lot of work into it. As well as they kind of keep continuity. In this comic Blue Beetle joins the Titans. I really feel like they are reading Teen Titans and they pull stuff from the comic to use in theirs. I really enjoy that about it. So in this comic, Blue Beetle is speaking to his back pack in it's alien language. They make the crazy symbols to represent the language. Then on the last page of the comic they give you a key. So you can go back and translate the alien language. How cool is that? Plus it is funny. It is worth the time to translate it. So how about you? Tiny Titan fans? Side note, the people behind this comic are really cool and crazy.

Spoiler. Hell yeah Femme Noir! First off the art is tight. So great, really sets the tone for this noir type of world. Could 3 ladies be the vigilantes known as Blonde justice? It has a Will Eisner’s Spirit feel to it. Old timey detective action. So far they have set up an action packed world of mystery and adventure. I am in. Have you checked out this comic? Thoughts? Why wouldn’t you want to check out this comic? I would be disappointed after this issue, if we found out it was just one of those ladies. It is a much better idea of having it be 3 separate ladies.

We had a great time at this week's Comic Book Club at The PIT (People's Improv Theater). Guest Brendan McGinley talked with us about his new comic Dose 2 (Indelible Comics) hot off the printers and the unfortunate tale of his trip to pick it up. Brendan also spoke about his work at Zuda Comics on Hannibal Goes to Rome. My personal favorite was his impression of an angsty teenage outcast X-Men character (complete with sound effects and simulated powers). And now he has combined the two, with a large helping of Neil Patrick Harris and a dash of gold cumin, to create Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along blog. The webseries features Mr. Harris as a struggling super-villian with a penchant for singing about his problems. It's pretty weird, but pretty funny. Nathan Fillion kills me.

Invincible Lives!

Our old pal Invincible is going to be popping up on iTunes, cell phones and even MTV2 as a digitally animated comic. Similar in style to the animated trailers that Marvel did for World War Hulk and DC did for the Young Liars, Invincible will feature the actual comic panels from the book brought to life with pop-up word balloons, music and panels flying every which way.

For Invincible, Gain Enterprises is employing a process called Bomb-xx, which they have previously used to create animated promotional comics for “Turistas,” “28 Weeks Later” and “Saw II.”

From the NY Times:

Episodes 1 through 12 of the digital endeavor cover the first four issues of the comic series. “It takes a second to get used to watching the stuff move because they animated the actual comics,” Mr. Kirkman said. Still, “it’s thrilling to have actual actors saying lines that I wrote years and years ago.” There are spots he said he regrets not having edited but over all, he is happy about the wider exposure the character will receive.

The first 36 issues would be completed by mid-September. The first six installments will be previewed at the San Diego Comic-Con next week and will be more widely available beginning Aug. 22.

Spoiler. Man why aren’t you reading this comic? It is good times people. Cassie survived a slasher (bad guy monster type) and now she and her big partner Vlad hunt down slashers and make them pay. So in this issue we get to see the puppet master behind all the evil wooden creatures. What I like so much about this comic is of course the making bad guys pay, but also the humor. A lot of fun with the cheesy news anchor guy, plus the talking dog is very funny. Oh not sure what I am talking about, read the book. So who is a Hack / Slash fan? Plus yes it was Bull#$&! Alex and Justin did the Hack/ Slash show and best fight without me!!

Spoiler. Buy this DVD you won’t be disappointed. I really loved all 6 different Batman stories! Batman is a little Manga’ed out. But it is still the same Batman you know and love. Plus Kevin Conroy is Batman! The action is sick, there were a couple moments, when I have to rewind. I said out loud, That was amazing I have to see it again. Plus they have a preview for the new animated Wonder Woman movie! That looks great as well. Plus, plus you get a copy of the graphic novel Batman year one! Which is my favorite Batman story of all time. Thank you Frank Miller. I was worried, when I heard 6 different Batman stories. But you are really exploring the state of Gotham, from 6 different points of view. As well as different sides to Batman. You might think the first one is a little too different from the Batman you know and love, but trust me. It just keeps getting better and better. I think it will really set the tone for the live action movie, very well. What did you think?

Personally when a really good movie comes out that I'm anticipating I try to immerse myself in the subject matter of the movie. It really helps give me a renewed sense of creativity and helps to form a more meaningful connection with the (impending) movie. In the case with Hellboy 2, I've gotten to speak with director Guillermo del Toro, Hellboy himself Ron Perlman, and the villain of Hellboy 2 (Prince Nuada) Luke Goss. Oh, and a little guy named Abe Sapien (Doug Jones). After speaking with them and re-reading as much of Mike Mignola's original Hellboy material as possible I was fully prepared for the awesomeness that is The Golden Army.

Raise your hand if you were not aware that Jim Henson's Muppets were actually just puppets with hands up their asses (I'm raising my hand). The suspension of disbelief is incredible when creature work and acting come together so well. Peanut butter and chocolate anyone? For anyone looking to immerse themselves in the Hellboy Narrative before seeing the movie (or before seeing it again, like me) be sure to check out our Hellboy Spectacular Episode of The Stack from this week, as well as our interview with Guillermo del Toro and the cast of Hellboy 2. Spoiler. OK So yes I was in Maine and I am blogging a little too much about it. But here is a crazy story. (OK maybe crazy is wrong term you decide) I have provided the link below to back up my story. OK so I was in Maine and I see this soda Capt’n Eli then I am in a comic book store and there is the comic staring right at me. Well Dave the magical comic book store guy pointed it out to me. Why is Dave magical, well I am in one store in Maine one day then I drove 2 hours and find another comic book store and I walk in and Dave (the same guy, not evil twin) Is standing behind the counter of a completely different comic book shop. It turns out that the stores our owned by the same guy, but it was a little crazy. Anywho, Capt’n Eli was a real guy. Fought in WWII, helped people and was a hero in Maine. So much so that they named a soda after him and then made a comic. Check it out, pretty cool. You can also download the comic. http://www.captneli.com/gnseries/storybehind.html The comic is fun. It is like Jonny Quest and is digital stills with word balloons. It is a light funny not a making fun of comics funny or itself funny. Talking: The Astounding Wolf-Man #7 and Brit #7

Spoiler. Wow, both these comics were really good! Things are getting really intense in the Wolf-man world. His wife and kid are about to leave him. Then his so called boss or teacher Gary, kills Wolf-Man’s wife and then to save her bites her. Then Wolf-Man walks in and Gary is like no it is not what you think. He disappears into vampire mist and Wolf-Man’s daughter walks in. No it is not what you think. Yeah crazy! Wolf-man has been a little light, but this issue set things right. Or at least puts the book back on track. I can’t wait for the next issue. Holly twists and turns. What do you think will happen? Do you like Wolf-Man? Brit had a cool appearance by Invincible. Brit is back or at least he thinks so, but his wife just got use to him being dead. You get some back-story on Brit and Invincibles Dad. Pretty cool. Plus a weird alien spider that takes over supers bodies. Bad banana hammock. Good comic. What do you think of Brit? I have been not really in love with it, but this issue makes me fall for it all over again. Oh summer love. What did you think Brit fan? Or no fan?

Spoiler. So I was on vacation in Maine and I stumbled upon a cool comic book store and the guy who worked their Dave recommended this comic. He said it was by a local guy so I gave it a shot. Turns out he was a fan of Pulp Secret and a nice guy. Plus he had good taste in comics. Like the cover, this is a well-drawn kind of tripped out comic. This issue is about little Mary Monster. She is a normal girl who gets yelled at because when she plays she gets her nice dresses all dirty. Oh and she has the head of a monkey gypsy demon. (The best I could describe it) Oh and she talks to fish and beetles. Plus she has a tail. But no one really points that out. Oh course this is issue #11, so I have missed some things. The point is this is a really fun well-drawn comic and in this issue Mary finds the socks of destiny. I have to read issue #12. Well if you don’t live in Maine, you can try and get a hold of Michael Connor to find a way to get his comics. I would say it is worth it. He is the man behind this great comic.

Spoiler. So I just saw the movie. I can't really blame Will Smith for this movie not being as great as I would have liked. There were some great moments, but over all the movie tries to do too many things. I liked drunk Hancock too much. That was fun and original. A superhero who is tired of being pitcure perfect. The problem is we don't get to see all the great drunk moments, we got one and a half. The rest is youtube clips. Nice Youtube plug$. Anyway instead of dealing with Will and his problem there is Charlizeand her deal. Oh by the way she is super as well. And then they have to fight for some reason. Oh and She can control the weather? That was a weird side thing that never gets fully explained. But then when these 2 team up they lose their powers? Well not all the time, just at certain times, when it sucks for them. Yes, I laughed at some stuff and enjoyed some scenes, but overall I was a little disappointed. I liked the preview, but I was hoping the movie would be more about Will struggling as a hero, which I think would have been a better movie. So rent it. I

Spoiler. OK now is the time to jump into Fear Agent. This is a new story arc and so far it rocks. Things are a little crazy in Heath’s world. His ship has crashed coming out of a Black Hole. Then he is fighting giant bugs, and then blacks out. Only to wake up and find himself being washed in a big tub by a hot lady. Don’t trust hot ladies! Well, OK maybe not all the time anyway. Why aren’t you reading Fear Agent? Rick Remender is one crazy dude and it comes out in his writing. He has made Fear Agent a solid comic. It has become a staple in my pull list.

Robot Chart Porn

io9 recently published a great cartesian plot of most of history's famous (or infamous) robots. The chart is based on factors including alignment (Good-Evil) and physiology (Human Form-Box Form). Some of the robots include the original Terminator (Schwartezegger Form), Eve (from Wall-E), the Daleks (from Dr. Who), and the Master Control Program (from Tron). The chart is meant to show the evolution of the depiction of robots in popular culture. Back in the days of the silent film (Metropolis) and for a long time after, robots were simply good or evil and that was that. They didn't have lovable personalities, or even the chaotic good alignment of our favorite claw-man Wolverine. Just looking at the chart it's easy to see how far the robot has come in cinema and television.

What are the your favorite qualities of robots today? Do you prefer the sensual human-form robots like Number 6, or are you a robot-purist and prefer metallic Centurions?

Spoiler. OK yes this is black and white comic and I am a sucker for that, but still this is a fun comic. Lets go back in time and have some karate action. It is a story of a man coming to grips with his past. Yes, I think it is weird that when a bad ass hooks up with a lady and doesn’t tell her about his past. Then bad guy assaults lady. Come on, oh we didn’t see that coming. But still this comic is a ton-o-old school fun. I mean a hobo fought a dude, that is a good time. How about you? ’76 am I the only guy enjoying this comic?

Spoiler. So you had to really like the art in this book. I did. I was a little surprised by the ending though. It seemed almost predictable. I mean when a high-powered bad guy has someone snooping around he has him or her eliminated. I have thought this was a fun 8 comics, I was just a little disappointed in the ending. I understand the idea of keeping Grendel untouched so he can do another comic, which I hope happens, but I think they could have done a better ending. How about you? What did you think about this series?

Our Pulp Secret Flickr Account has been updated with the most recent episode of Comic Book Club. This week's episode featured Heather Fink of Street Meat @ Cake Shop and Matt Donnelly of VH1 and the webcomic Police Procedures. Both guests were great comedians AND major comic book nerds. This weeks episode paid particular attention to Y The Last Man, which recently ended it's series run. Matt talked about how he picked up comic books again by reading this series at the suggestion of our very own Alex, Justin, and Pete last year. He read and never looked back. Don't worry no spoilers for those that haven't read the final issue. Heather also talked about several of her favorite comic book series including 90s Starman (Justin was overjoyed as this is his favorite run too). Be sure to download the podcast to get all the goods. Especially the extreme adult stories Heather finished the night with. Sorry no spoilers there either, get the podcast and hope the story wasn't omitted for extremely hilarious obscenity!

Remembering George Carlin

The face of comedy was never the same after the 1972 release of Class Clown by one George Carlin. Prior to releasing his "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" Class Clown album Carlin had been noted for his frequent guest spots and stints as host of The Tonight Show. At the time Clown was released Carlin had started to appear in his trademark pony-tail, clean-cut appearance. This look was aptly parodied by Krusty The Klown in the 9th Season Simpson's Episode "The Last Temptation of Krusty" (S9E15).

Carlin went on to do countless HBO specials for the next 30 years. HBO just announced that HB02 would be running all of his specials over the next few days.
