Update April 16, 2012:  As I implied in the article, I did indeed give the Sorting Hat another go.  I deleted my old account and created a new one to comply with the Pottermore Terms of Service.  The result of my sorting this time around was not the same.  If you are curious to find out scroll down to the bottom of the article.

NOTE: This article contains SPOILERS regarding the Sorting Hat quiz.  Expressed below are my personal opinions on the nature of the quiz.  Do not take this as an attack on houses – all exhibit qualities I like believe it or not!

The particular house I was sorted into are the loyal, hardworking, and tenacious Hufflepuffs. The acceptance message gleefully states how honorable the standing of the house is and how it goes out of its way not to boast about it. Why should I not be content with a house that J.K. Rowling herself once was sorted into? [1]  What is there not to love about sporting the colors that have been heralded by heroes like Cedric Diggory or Nymphadora Tonks? Isn’t it a nice statement about my character that I am viewed as a valued friend – ever true to the end?

Well I’ll tell you the problem – this does not reflect my heart.  Sure I believe in maintaining honor among friends and to treat your fellow human being with compassion but this does not define me.  From the early beginnings of the Harry Potter series I saw my tastes, quirks, interests, etc. align with the Ravenclaws.  To possess knowledge about human nature itself, to question why things are the way they are, to constantly test my mettle in the skills I enjoy – that is who I view myself as.  Perhaps this is a vain point-of-view and self-serving because after-all I may not truly live up to the pursuits I just listed above…but it is my honest feeling about who I am as a person.

Was I able to show these inner qualities I believed I possess?  Yes and no.  Below I will outline how my Sorting Hat quiz went.  I will not provide all the possible answers but I will attempt to summarize the questions and answers I received in the next section.

1. What kind of potion would you invent?
2. What is your favorite instrument?
3. Would you rather be…?
4. What do you want to learn at Hogwarts?
5. Most tempting road?
6. Forest or river?
7. Left or right?

The answers offered by each of my 7 questions (out of 150 total) were one part of the quiz that really satisfied me. While there was a question that more or less asked: “Are you clever, brave, ambitious, or kind?” (Hint: Question #1) – most offered a wide variety of options in which I could single out my personal preferences.

Take for example Question #3 “Which would you rather be…?” There were two options at hand that I believe collided with each other – the selection I made which was “trusted” and another available answer which was “praised.” While I am in no way implying that all Ravenclaws have massive egos (don’t we all), opportunities to show one’s wit and be admired for it does indeed sound like a desire that fits the house. This particular option could bode well with Slytherins too who often possess high aspirations and would like to receive credit for them. Though my gut told me this could potentially steer me into the claws of the raven mascot, I dug within and chose “trusted.”

Alright, I’m already showing my true Hufflepuff colors right? Wrong. Allow me to share a few more of my answers before I argue a possible defense for a ticket into Ravenclaw…

A second set of answers caused another clash of known house traits. Question #4 offers a myriad of Hogwarts subjects in which you select one as your favorite. There is an option however to joyfully state that you would like to “learn them all.” Once again I stuck to my guns and went based on the subject I am drawn to – which is “Transfiguration.” A Ravenclaw limiting their subjects of study does not exactly sound kosher does it? Whose to say that Ravenclaws naturally want to be an encyclopedia on anything and everything? This was a tough question to ponder but if we want to go based on the classic tenet of the house – they are the ones who believe in limitless knowledge: “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.” [2]

Looks like my chances for Ravenclaw are completely dashed right? Again, I think not. Lets throw in one more question to the mix to make things even more interesting…

Each of us have beaten paths that call to us.  Pottermore does not neglect this attraction in Question #5 – in which it offers what appear to be easy going roads versus ones that are for the more daring of heart.  Naturally I avoided roads like the “dark lantern-lit alley” as it did not appeal to me and I do not possess the nerve to trek it.  There were two options however that resonated with me…those being “a wide, sunny, and grassy lane” and “an avenue of ancient buildings.”  My brain did a tug of war arguing the merits of both.  The argument in favor of the grassy lane is one of the basis for my criticisms of the quiz so I will not reveal that yet.  After hemming and hawing over the microphone as I narrated my sorting during our Pottermore audiocast – I settled for the charming sunny lane.

Enough beating around the bush – the time has come that I explain why the answers outlined above do not necessarily brand me a pleasant Puff.

When Harry told his worried son that the Sorting Hat takes your choice into account – it was sealed in the minds of the Potter fandom that the hat will at least hear out your plea[3] As you can see in the lengthy section above (my apologies, I guess it wasn’t so much a summary after-all) – none of the queries provide a chance for you to put forth your personal choice. Now I bet you’re yelling: “Persian Poetess, that is NOT true – there is such a thing as Hat Stalls silly!”

Hat Stalls are when the Sorting Hat recognizes that a student may potentially fit in two houses and grants the student the decision of which he or she would prefer (the exception being Neville Longbottom).  While Hat Stalls were rare in the books themselves, they should not be on the quiz. Even someone showing the tiniest smidgen of another house should be given the chance to voice their choice. These hidden qualities may not exclaim themselves through this quiz but there are ways that they could – with or without Hat Stalls.

Jumping back to my answers for a second – lets take a look at Question #5′s answer again. Lets say the Sorting Hat offered a subset of answers that back my reasoning as to why I thought a sunny lane is more enchanting than a street lined with ruins. If it did – perhaps I would argue: “Old monuments can be studied all around us but how often in this day and age filled with war, toil, and suffering do we get to observe something like a bright and peaceful path?” Maybe I would even say: “As important as it is to study the past we should not necessarily dwell on what was once great – at times we must use our present knowledge to capitalize on something that already is great or potentially can be great!”

There’s no telling if those are Ravenclaw answers but at least it would allow me to elaborate my preferences rather than assume what I meant by them.  They could still restrict it to the multiple choice style format – all that I am arguing that is needed is the chance to put a deeper set of variables at play – ones that at least decode why your tastes lean a certain way.

Pottermore’s Sorting Hat quiz is indeed sophisticated in its approach but slightly broken. If J.K. and her team could devise a way for both our head and heart to be heard – I would call this the essential Sorting Hat quiz. I am still very pleased with the effort presented in this beta version and I seek to be a proud Hufflepuff. When October comes perhaps I may try my hand again but regardless of house placement – it is our actions that define who we are most of all. Rowling’s own works have best proven that to us…

Update April 16, 2012:
Well folks it looks like I truly am a hybrid at heart. As I stated above, I started afresh and closed my shiny beta account with a sigh. Within the span of 20 minutes or less I took yet another seat under the brim of the ominous Sorting Hat. This time instead of showing the bright yellow bumblebee colors of the Hufflepuffs — my screen was splashed with Ravenclaw blue.

I plan to write another article regarding the Pottermore Sorting Hat addressing not the questions themselves but the amazing debate that has spanned the past several months in our hopping comments section. Astute readers have brought up some compelling points both in favor of and against the Hat. I will comb through some of the best and examine the strong rationale behind them.

The days of the magical quill challenge seem like a century away.  Harry Potter fans like myself have finally been provided the opportunity to explore the universe of the books deeper than ever before thanks to a golden ticket – I mean welcome email.  I have to admit that I have postponed this review by a week due to being so submerged in Pottermore.  Does this mean that J.K. Rowling has delivered and given the ultimate encyclopedia of the Potter books?  Has she provided the kind of immersion we only experience in our wildest dreams and intricate imaginations?  The answer to this question is not an easy one I am afraid…so allow me to describe what awaits you once you are past the entrance gates of Pottermore.

For a beta product – Pottermore has an impressive amount of polish to it.  The linear path from Privet Drive and to Harry’s battle with Professor Quirrell is presented on an easy to follow map known as the “Gateway.”  Of course further progress through the series will be opened within the years to come and each of the 7 books will be open to exploration.  Atop each screen or scene there is also a banner that allows you to quickly jump to the following:

• An owl perched above that notifies you when you receive friend requests or Wizard Duel challenges.
• A mysterious locked button which cannot be accessed even after completing the story.  Many believe this will be a link to the Pottermore e-book store which will be opened in October.
• The Diagon Alley mall selling any school supply or magical ingredient you may need.  You also obtain your avatar here by choosing between a cat, owl, or toad.
• A page dedicated to your Gringotts vault that stores all your galleons.
• The Great Hall which displays the current number of Hogwarts students along with house membership statistics and leaders.
• The Common Room which contains links to a description of your house common room and comments from your other house members.
• Spells you can practice and use in Wizard Duels – I’ll go into details about spell casting later in the review.
• Your trunk that stores any items you find along your journey such as story items or Chocolate Frog Cards.
• A friends list that allows you to send gifts or issue Wizard Duel challenges.
• A tab that contains all your favorited places, people, chapters, etc.

Each chapter is made up of three to four scenes in which you progress through that contain tidbits from the stories or entries sharing J.K. Rowling’s personal thoughts.  The scenes can best be described as living paintings.  Each tableau has three layers which one can zoom in and out of to get a better look at the details.  I must say that the art direction of these is immaculate and much more authentic than the Harry Potter movies themselves.  J.K. Rowling’s loving hand can definitely be seen here.

The detail begins to fall short past the gorgeous paintings.  Don’t get me wrong, there’s a longwinded entry from the kooky wandmaker Ollivander about wand wood magical properties – apparently I had to win the allegiance of my Acacia wood phoenix feather core wand because of its peculiar temperament.  There are also a couple character bios that provide intriguing insight from Rowling about characters’ past flames, Hogwarts house memberships, and career history.  I definitely recommend taking a peek at the Minerva McGonagall and Professor Quirrell entries.  You will soon speed through these enticing entries and uncover mostly story summaries.

The minigames offered up by the beta are also a little on the shallow side.  Spell casting is a matter of hitting keyboard keys in a certain sequence with the correct timing and once done simply cast the spell offscreen with no animations of the spell at all.  At the moment there are certain spells (I will not disclose which) that are currently the only viable ones to use in Wizard Duel and casting any others prove simply fruitless.  Potion brewing is quite a hit and miss affair too.  I appreciate that they decided against instant gratification and made patience a crucial factor – 1 hour to brew a potion pushes it to the max.  Instructions have a fair amount of difficulty – not too hard and not too easy – but I did not appreciate the lag between selecting certain ingredients.

Alright lets back off the beta quirks and focus on what is really working.  The sorting hat is a cool feature of the beta and while I do find it flawed (Update: read our new article Pottermore Sorting Hat Questions Analyzed) – the quiz is unlike any other I have ever seen.  I was sorted in Hufflepuff and it took me quite awhile to look back and possibly infer which answers lead to which house.  Do not assume that trying to press the back button once you get your result will allow you to retake the quiz either.  As Rowling states in the video that rolls before the test “its decision is final” and there is no going back (unless signing up for a new account in October I assume).

Two other well executed features of the beta are the ability to replay previously explored scenes and keeping track of friends.  I am glad that Pottermore decided against a one-shot deal and allows you to return to any chapter of your choosing regardless of where you currently are in the story.  This will promote the longevity of the project and encourage re-reads as the team adds more behind-the-scenes content to older chapters.  The friends list is done nicely too and you can assign nicknames to your Pottermates easily.  User-to-user communication is sorely missed but at least nearly every entry has a comments section in which you can bandy about opinions with other users on the content in front of you.

For now Pottermore comes close to the ultimate experience we are craving but does not exactly hit the mark just yet.  Remember as of this moment its still in beta and more content is surely on the way…

Its OFFICIAL everyone – several reports are indicating that the long wait for individuals who got into the Pottermore Beta on Day 1 of the magical quill clues challenge is finally over and accounts are getting activated. Tweets are flooding timelines, owls are being released, and email inboxes are filling up with Pottermore welcome emails. This is joyous news after what seems like centuries of attempting to pinpoint dates on which they will arrive. The wait was not an easy one especially when on Wednesday August 10 a pre-welcome email was sent with the tantalizing subject of “Congratulations” revealing that activation emails will be sent within the middle of August.

Will the servers of J.K. Rowling’s beloved Pottermore be able to hold up as the first rush of beta accounts log in? I don’t mean to jinx it but you have to admit – this would be a rotten time to see the sinister “overwhelming demand” message. The silver lining regarding this is that it will be a good field test for the Pottermore team to work out the kinks and make sure no one’s virtual experience with the Harry Potter books gets painfully interrupted. Even the Pottermore Insider itself points out a Beta feedback button we can use to share our thoughts. Now I bet you’re saying: “Stop beating around the bush and tell us about the inner workings of Pottermore already!”

Allow me to caution fellow beta testers about what exactly they share regarding Pottermore. We at Dragonblogger.com will be sure to fill you in on any of the experience we can along the lines of the website’s Terms and Conditions. A bullet point use to be found in the T&C that stated:

You may not make, use or distribute screenshots of any Game without our express permission to do so.

This sentence has since been removed but of course Pottermore’s copyrights remain intact so tread carefully.  For fellow bloggers, you can refer to the Pottermore Press Room to access pictures that are considered acceptable to share.  If things play out for the better – then you will definitely see as many screenshots as we can muster.

Pictures or video aside, there is no indication that talking about Pottermore and exploring its features is forbidden . We will surely be thorough and describe the 18,000 word (and growing) experience in detail. Bear in mind that while some of the online features of Pottermore are open – the shop in fact has not. The Pottermore team has shared that when the shop opens in October:

…readers can exclusively purchase and download the digital audio books and, for the first time, the eBooks, with the complete series available in a range of popular language editions – and more languages to be added later.

The shop is not the only thing that will be postponed.  According to those who attended the LeakyCon2011 convention, Pottermore will contain content largely from The Sorcerer’s Stone – and will not release anything from The Chamber of Secrets until eary 2012.

It amazes me how fast and furious the journey towards entry to the Pottermore Beta has been. Lets take a moment to turn back the dial and see what we have learned along the way as well as what is to come.

As the vlog indicated, the web is teeming with information about Pottermore, and can quench some of the thirst for answers. There is no denying that nothing beats firsthand experience but I already feel like I have been given tantalizing tastes of Pottermore. What has been more satisfying than uncovering interesting features of the site has been connecting with fans like you. Whether by tweet, tumble, stumble, share, like, comment – phew ok I think I’ll give up listing options – your voice has reached our ears and there is no sweeter note.

Dragonblogger pride and fan admiration aside – the question of the moment is what is to come for Pottermore Beta participants? At present the only glimmer of hope has been the confirmation emails that have been sent from the powers that be at Pottermore. According the emails, “mid-August to late September” is when accounts will be activated and ready to experience the magic.

With small chunks of individuals being let in at a time, will interacting with friends during the beta be possible I wonder. Several interviews have stated that chatting among minors is not going to be performed the same way as those over the age of 13. Much of the interactivity will be limited in order to maintain child safety. Those who are of age however will be given access to some form of chat room based on house or user-to-user communication through owls.

What are most of you future Pottermore users looking forward to?  Is interacting with friends one of your main desires or are you more into having a personal experience with the Potter universe?

The hours are ticking by for fans of the Harry Potter books to receive their welcome email to the Pottermore Beta. As we previously discussed – forecasting of when that may be is spreading like wildfire. To get a taste of Pottermore does not necessarily require your welcome owl to arrive yet. In fact, there have been some great details released thanks to social media and YouTube. Two clips in particular are dazzling J.K. Rowling devotees and show a snippet of the wand selection process as well as the much anticipated sorting hat process…

The video above reveals for a brief moment two factors in regards to wand selection:

Once again, I am tickled how unexpected the formulas are for tailoring your Pottermore experience. It is becoming increasingly obvious that this will be far from the quintessential online personality quizzes we have become so accustom to. Don’t believe me? Then take a look at the next clip that shows a journalist getting grilled by the sorting hat itself.

This clip imparts some unusual questions regarding your Potter persona for example:

• How do you wish to be remembered when you die?
• Are you partial to the river or the forest?
• Heads or tails?

I wonder if it is possible to game the system and nail down potential houses because of this. Though it seems simple enough to attach a house to particular questions, I feel the folks at Pottermore have something trickier up their sleeve. As amazing as all this customization is, will it lead to something tangible?

Imagine if you could purchase house robes engraved with your name or a wand whittled to the exact specifications of your own. If that is too tricky, then perhaps a very finely made certificate on vellum that rolls out like a scroll or other Potter paraphernalia you could show off. It is uncertain if the Pottermore shop will ever become that custom for the user but you cannot deny how genius that would be if it was.

Many fans are hungering for the e-books understandably and cannot wait to load those up on the e-reader of their choice. Worried that your e-reader is not on the list? Fear not, according to the Pottermore Insider post You ask, we answer, any book under the sun will be at your digital finger tips:

What formats will the ebooks be available in? Will I be able to read them on my iPad/Sony Reader/Kindle…?
The Pottermore Shop is due to open in October. Our aim is to offer the ebooks in an as many formats as possible. We’ll provide more information closer to the time.
