This is a syzygium that I purchased from a commercial plant nursery this year. I have done some initial branch selection and toyed with the idea of two or three different fronts. It has very attractive mature bark for such a small specimen as well as a section of deadwood along the main trunk. The scar which was probably created due to injury while in the nursery has begun healing and it is starting to look appealing. It is probably going to be styled in the informal upright style.

I chose this tree because of its beautiful foliage. It is a lovely colour and texture. I originally thought about a literati style for this tree. It is still young (probably about 8-10years old according to the nursery), so I may decide for a shorter tree that works with the trunk.

I was visiting a local nursery that carries a small selection of native trees for Colorado and I spotted a tree I had not seen before. The tree was pretty tall but looked interesting from a distance. I picked up the tree to check the roots and trunk and was pleasantly surprised to see nabari and a gnarly twisted trunk with some deadwood on it. The leaves appeared to be relatively small. My initial thoughts at the nursery was to reduce the height of the tree by at least half to a set of branches that might make a nice apex. The tree has one lower branch that extends about 24″ and I thought it might make for a nice simi-cascade or even a cascade tree. One of my concerns is that this tree is a Buckthorn and my prior experience with them is that they are brittle and break easily. I do like the fact that it does not have any thorns. I expect the tree will end up being a semi-cascade with a small-medium apex. Hopefully the front of the tree will be able to show off the deadwood on the tree. This tree is native to only 6 counties in the United States. I am hoping this tree turns into will turn into a prized native Bonsai.

This is a Creeping Juniper purchased from a local nursery. It has lovely foliage and an interesting trunkline. My initial plan for the tree was to do a cascade, but after closer inspection of the trunk, I decided to take a chance and remove 60 percent of the foliage, and take up a new leader for an informal upright. Lets see how it progresses.

This is a pre-announcement of our greatest bonsai event to be held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the first bonsai biennial ever done….

We are organizing a colossal bonsai event called “International Bonsai Art & Culture Biennale” ( Theme : When Art and Culture Meet Through Bonsai ) in Yogyakarta, an old historical/ cultural city in Central Java of Indonesia, renowned as the centre of classical Javanese fine art and culture .

The exhibition venue will be in an old historical Dutch fortress, the “Vrederburg Fortress Museum” and the “International Culture Night” will be hosted by our Yogya Sultan in the “Keraton Palace“. All are within walking distance to the city center, Pasar Turi traditional market, Malioboro night market etc. After the opening ceremony, all guests will join the “andong” horse-carriage and “becak” city parade to enjoy the unique bonsai display along the city boulevard.

There will be  “Sultan Trophy” for the best bonsai… uncounted art & cultural activities during the event e.g. demo of batik drawing, silver jewelries, ceramic making, painting, sculpturing, traditional music (gamelan) & dance, wayang (puppet) show; touring to such as Borobudur Temple, Merapi Volcano, Taman Sari Water Palace, Kasongan traditional crafts center, caving advanture ; or we can also organize special tour to Bromo Mt, Bali Island or other specific trips…etc…

We will also organize a picnic-trip where all guests will participate in the “Friendship Trees-Planting Picnic” as part of our green campaign activity. We are also planning to all guests to participate in the process of making “The World Largest Pot” for the museum record; last but not least, all international delegates will be requested to participate to perform their unique culture in the “International Culture Night” with their traditional costums, ofcourse …and more…
