Have You Worked the Steps? - STABLE Recovery
Over the years I got in the habit of asking certain questions when speaking with a client who had relapsed. Have you been attending meetings? Have you been working with a sponsor? Three Nights with Canadian Brass - DVD

Three Nights With Canadian Brass is a great value for anyone who loves brass music. It is basically 3 concerts on one DVD. Even though some of the members of the Canadian Brass have changed over the years (as you will see in the 3 different concerts) their entertainment value remains very high. Not only does this DVD showcase their great musicianship, it also displays their great ability to make great music and be humorous at the same time.

My favorite section are: Hornsmoke (A Horse Opera), Gilda and the 5 Dukes, and Boy Mozart but it is all good. I’m sure you will enjoy it.

My Arban Adventure Week 3

My thoughts, observations, and insights for week 3.

This week I began spending more time on my warm up. As my lips have gotten stronger I have felt the need to take more care in developing a good routine for my daily warm up.

Daily Warm Up

long tones
low to mid register lip slurs
low to mid register chromatic scales
First Studies 1-10 used in warm up time on several days
12 major scales beginning with F# below middle C
mid to high register lip slurs
mid to high register chromatic scales
major scales in high register

I tried to vary each day’s warm up routine some but still maintain the basic structure mentioned above. In warm up and other practice I tried to remember to have equal amounts of resting and playing.

Using Metronome in Daily Practice

This week I began using the metronome in my daily practice in Arban. I have always known the benefits of using a metronome but I have rarely used one over the years. This goes back to the lack of discipline I have mentioned previously.

Sight Reading

In addition to daily practice I also decided to do some regular sight reading at least one day a week. Sight reading, without practicing, has benefits for all musicians—beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Make sure you chose music for your sight reading that challenges you.

Anxious to Play Everyday

Everyday I wake up anxious to start playing. It’s been a long time since I have enjoyed playing trumpet this much. It feels very good.

Making Progress

I am seeing and hearing progress with tone, breath support, embouchure, and endurance. Three weeks of disciplined practice have already paid off and I am expecting to see much more progress in the future.

My Lips Dont Want to Slur

I have always struggled with lip slurs—it has been an ongoing problem for as long as I can remember. As a result, I have always believed I wasn’t as good as other people I played with who were able to play them well. It was a big part of my music/trumpet inferiority complex. I really believe my trouble with lip slurs was one of the things that caused me to self-destruct and unconsciously sabotage my playing. One of the ways this happened was I had a chip on my shoulder and would get very defensive among other things. The belief that I couldn’t play well led to not playing well. Over the years I have seen this same type of self-destruct mode in most, if not all, areas of my life. I have since learned it is an example of what John Bradshaw calls “toxic shame.”

In trumpet terms, it would play out like this—“it’s not that I am playing badly in a certain situation, it’s that I AM BAD.” Not my actions but who I am is bad. Toxic shame has been working on my destruction and ultimate defeat my whole life. But, I am overcoming this in all areas of life, including my trumpet playing.

How does this relate to lip slurs you might ask? Well, one way is because of toxic shame I struggled in secret—hiding my failure from others, at least trying to. Instead of talking with my teacher about my struggle I hid it and secretly struggled and failed.

What I have learned is lip slurs is a misnomer—they should be called breath slurs. Lips are obviously involved since the sound is produced by buzzing your lips but the real power for lip slurs is in the breath. Instead of increasing the breath pressure to play higher notes I was trying to squeeze them out with lip strength. Since I didn’t understand the importance of breath over lip to play higher I was never able to really reach the higher notes (higher than high C).

Such a simple solution! If I had not been “ashamed” to share my struggle with my teacher in college I’m sure he could have helped me with this. My toxic shame held me back in so many other ways it is not funny. The good news is I have worked through most of that and I am now making real progress on becoming who I want to be—it’s a shame it took me 49 years to get here.

So, to sum up. Lip slurs require great breath support AND lips, not lips alone. And, toxic shame is a much bigger problem that will hurt you in many ways. If you think you have toxic shame get some help from a professional counselor or therapist. You won’t be sorry.
