The Daily Practice Routine

This post is a summary of an article of the same name by Bernard Fitzgerald from The Instrumentalist (March-April 1947). Direct quotes from the original article are within quotation marks.

Fundamental techniques to be developed in warm-up routine:

Tone and breath control
Lip flexibility
Coordination of tonguing and fingering

“As the student progresses, drills should be included which employ a wider range and demand increasing facility.”

Tone and Breath Control

Begin with sustained tones in mid and lower registers, not louder than mf.
Also good for aiding and strengthening embouchure and developing increased endurance.
Some experts recommend “buzzing” on the mouthpiece.
- Don’t over do it.
- Rest frequently.
Daily practice for tone control. Beginners should focus on type 1.
1. Play steady, controlled tones of good quality without dynamic change with different volumes ( p, mf, f ).
2. Sustained tones that change dynamically

Lip Flexibility

Lip slurs are necessary to develop ability to make changes quickly and accurately.
Master slow slurs and gradually increase tempo and range.
Daily practice should include:
- slow, sustained lip slurs regardless of the player’s ability.
- play exercises till able to play it perfectly.
- gradually extend range.
- increase tempo after good control has been mastered.
- interval studies (slurred and tongued)

Coordinating Tongue and Fingers

Herbert Clarke’s “Technical Studies” or similar exercises are important to develop tongue and finger coordination.

10 Unaccompanied Hymns for Trumpet

I arranged these hymns because of the many times I wanted to play in a service but had no accompanist. Also, I thought it would be good to have some etudes using hymn tunes.

Each of these arrangements includes the hymn tunes without embellishment and then at least one more verse in one of many styles that is typical for trumpet or cornet.

My Arban Adventure Week 4

Welcome to week 4 of My Arban Adventure.

I am very pleased with how things are coming along. I am seeing a lot of progress with embouchure and regaining coordination between tonguing, fingering, and breath support. I am gaining more endurance. It’s a good feeling to wake up every day looking forward to playing. In fact, there have been a few days that I wasn’t able to play much in Arban because I had too much going on and just didn’t have the time—I really missed getting to play.

Refining my method seems to be an every week thing at this point. So, I suppose change is my normal until I get things just the way I want them. I have been figuring out what works best through trial and error. Hopefully, there will be more trial and less error.

Three Nights with Canadian Brass - DVD

Three Nights With Canadian Brass is a great value for anyone who loves brass music. It is basically 3 concerts on one DVD. Even though some of the members of the Canadian Brass have changed over the years (as you will see in the 3 different concerts) their entertainment value remains very high. Not only does this DVD showcase their great musicianship, it also displays their great ability to make great music and be humorous at the same time.

My favorite section are: Hornsmoke (A Horse Opera), Gilda and the 5 Dukes, and Boy Mozart but it is all good. I’m sure you will enjoy it.
