I got to meet Roman this week and spend time watching him play. He gave me lots of kisses! Some of the words folks use to describe him at the Humane Society include energetic, very friendly, sweetheart, and awesome.

I was so impressed with the Houston Humane Society’s facilities. The dogs live in clean, air-conditioned runs with a glass door. They share space with one or two other dogs. They have plenty of space to run out in the garden or other green space. The facility also features a Wellness Center, for low-cost animal care and $30 spay/neuter. The Houston Humane Society is working to adopt 1,000 animals June 1 – August 31 to compete against 49 shelters to win Rachael Ray ASPCA $100K Challenge. As of June 15 they’ve adopted 135 animals!

Roman is part of the Houston Humane Society’s Project Dog program, which trains animals in basic obedience and manners. Roman can sit on command and walk the agility equipment.

When Roman met another dog on our walk, his tail was constantly wagging. He is so friendly greeting every dog outside! Here is a cute video showing his friendly nature…

I received the name and photo of the first dog I will represent this summer and help find a family. Meet Roman, a nearly three-year-old Chihuahua mix. He loves to snuggle according to his people friends! He walks well on a leash and sits quickly for a treat. He has been at the shelter for 10 months, so he desperately wants a family to take him in. Avenue Zoo kicks off Thursday, June 13, with performances through August 18 at 11am and 1pm Thursday through Sunday. The performance features animal puppetry, local actors and lively songs and music in partnership with Theater Under the Stars. The 25-minute production follows the adventures of Zoe, who visits the Houston Zoo and learns about the different species, their habitat, and how she can get more involved with the Zoo and wildlife conservation.

Avenue Zoo was adapted for the Houston Zoo and created and produced by the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo.

Zoo admission is $14 for adults and $10 for kids ages 2-11. Take advantage of the $4 off coupon for admission after 4 pm ( if you aren’t going to the new Avenue Zoo!). The Houston Zoo is located at Hermann Park.

Girls’ Night Out: Grab your favorite sister or girlfriend and head to Studio Movie Grill’s monthly series, Girls’ Night Out. The Wednesday, June 12, event features The Wedding Singer (PG) starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. The $1 monthly chick flick series is held the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm.

$1 Movie Classics: The next $1 Movie Classics is Thursday, June 20, 7:30 pm, featuring Caddyshack (R). This 1980 classic features Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield.
