Trix Snack Mix Recipe & DIY Sugar Skull Pumpkins for Dia de los MuertosPin It

My family is observing Dia de los Muertos this year by serving my Trix Snack Mix in Sugar Skull Pumpkins. I’ll show you how to make both the snack mix and the pumpkins! I wanted to teach my children about a holiday of a different culture, and I’ve always been a big fan of sugar skulls so I decided that we would observe Dia de los Muertos from October 31 thru November 2. I shopped at Walmart for Trix cereal as a delicious fruity base for my snack mix and I’d love to show you how to make this easy snack mix too!

Trix Cereal at Walmart

When I shop at Walmart for cereal, I look for Big G cereals that come in a “Giant Size” because those boxes are the most affordable (if you look at price per ounce) and they last the longest in our pantry! I’m a big fan of Walmart’s everyday low prices because it makes it more affordable for me to shop for groceries for my family. With two growing boys in our family, we go through cereal fast! Trix cereal is a favorite because if it’s fruity flavor. I also shopped the dried fruits and nuts section in the product area of Walmart in order to buy the other ingredients I needed for my snack mix.

My goal for my Trix Snack Mix was to make it the perfect mix of sweet and salty. The pepitos (pumpkin seeds), plantain chips and honey sesame sticks are all salty. The Trix cereal, greek yogurt covered almonds and apple cinnamon bites are all fruity and sweet.

I think it’s so important to commemorate deceased members of our family. They are an important part of who I’ve become today, and I want my children to know about them through my stories. Dia de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Mexico that involves families gathering to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

My kids loved watching me paint the Sugar Skulls. I used foam carvable pumpkins so that I can same them for next year! The artwork takes some time to do, so I knew I didn’t want to have to throw them away after we were finished observing the holiday. If you want your kids to help decorate Sugar Skulls, I recommend using small real pumpkins.

This Trix Snack Mix using #BigG cereal is so easy to make because you simply add the ingredients together and stir! Here’s my recipe to print along with easy substitutes you can make:

Quick no-bake cereal bars recipe
Ingredients
  • 5 cups Trix cereal
  • 1 cup pepitas (dried & salted pumpkin seeds)
  • 1 cup apple cinnamon bites (or dried apple)
  • 1 cup plantain chips (or banana chips)
  • 1 cup greek style yogurt almonds (or yogurt covered raisins)
  • 1 cup honey sesame sticks
Instructions
  1. Mix together all ingredients and serve in a Sugar Skull Pumpkin.

I was so excited that I finally got to make Sugar Skulls because I love this form of artwork. I used foam carvable pumpkins instead of real pumpkins so that I could preserve my artwork and use it year after year. Here are the instructions:

DIYĀ Sugar Skull Pumpkins for #DiaDeMuertos

Directions

What youā€™ll need:

  • foam carveable pumpkin
  • white parchment chalk paint
  • fine tip paint pens (black & bright colors)
  • small round plastic container
  • white ribbon
  • hot glue gun
  1. Carve a hole in the top of your pumpkin for your small round plastic container to fit inside. Your carveable pumpkin should carve just like a real pumpkin!
  2. Paint your pumpkin with the white parchment chalk paint and let it dry
  3. Paint your pumpkin with a second layer of white parchment chalk paint and let it dry
  4. Draw your Sugar Skull design using a pencil
  5. Outline your Sugar Skull design with a black paint pen
  6. Fill in your design with the black and color paint pens
  7. Hot glue a white ribbon around the edge of your container if it will stick out of the pumpkin
  8. Fill the container with your Trix Snack Mix and enjoy!

DIY Tub & Shower Cleaner

DIY Tub & Shower Cleaner made with Palmolive

Time for me to share my favorite new use for Palmolive! I’m cleaning my bathroom with this DIY Tub & Shower Cleaner that I made by mixing 1 cup of Palmolive with 1 cup of warm white vinegar in an empty spray bottle. Label your spray bottleĀ so everyone knows that it’s a bathroom cleaner (a Mr. Yuk sticker helps children who can’t read). Spray on your shower and tub surfaces and let sit for one hour before wiping and rinsing with water. I picked out Palmolive Lots Blossom because it smells amazing and I wanted my cleaner to be purple. I love how the Palmolive mixes perfectly with the white vinegar and it does a great job of cleaning my bathroom surfaces!

The beauty of this Iced Pumpkin Spiced Tea Latte recipe is that you can use any spice or chai tea bags that you have! Pin it to your Halloween, Pumpkin, or Drinks board to find it quickly later. They key is to make a tea concentrate that would be even more delicious by adding canned pumpkin. Now I happened to have a Pumpkin Spice Tea in my pantry, but I know that this recipe would be delicious with a wide variety of spice and chai teas. This drink is a fun “tea alternative” to an iced latte made with espresso. Use your favorite type of milk – mine is Almond Milk! I was also looking for a way to use my canned pumpkin after I made my Orangey Pumpkin Muffins. Of course my kids are begging me to make more muffins, but sometimes I need to make a treat that’s just for me!

Iced Pumpkin Spiced Tea Latte Recipe

You'll love this Fall Treat that uses your leftover canned pumpkin and any spice or chai tea you have on hand.
Ingredients
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 spice or chai tea bags
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 heaping spoonful of canned pumpkin
  • Milk
  • Ice Cubes
  • Whip Cream & Cherry for top (optional)
Instructions
  1. Make your tea concentrate ahead of time by steeping 2 tea bags in 1 cup of hot water. Let the tea concentrate cool on the counter then add your spoonful of canned pumpkin and cinnamon. Refrigerate until chilled.
  2. Fill your glass with ice then pour milk to about halfway.
  3. Shake the tea concentrate until well mixed then add it to the glass until the glass is full.
  4. Top with whip cream and a cherry if you'd like!
