appendTo is thrilled to welcome Joel A. Glovier to the team. Joel (aka JAG) is a designer and front-end developer who believes in data-inspired creative decisions that make marketing sense. He's passionate about intuitive user experiences, progressive enhancement, performance-oriented CSS and making things look beautiful.

Joel's background is in communications and he loves studying human behavioral patterns. His work prior to appendTo has included youth ministry, freelance graphic design, running his own business and working at a nonprofit dedicated to healing children in the developing world with curable disabilities through surgery.

In addition to his professional life, Joel pursues a highly diverse set of interests including breakdancing, skateboarding, photography, tuner cars, hip-hop culture, the Pittsburgh Steelers and studying the Bible. He writes about a wide range of topics on his blog, and shares cool industry insights (and other random things) on Twitter.

Joel lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and two kids.

Minnesota Developers Offered Free Conference With Andrew Powell and Others

appendTo’s Andrew Powell will join five other experts at the Tech Connection Live! Twins Cities on May 18 in Minneapolis. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Microsoft Technology Center in Edina. There is no charge to attend and breakfast and lunch are included.

Andrew’s session will introduce you to Juice UI, a collection of ASP.NET WebForms components that allows developers to add jQuery UI elements to any new or existing project easily. We'll discuss basic usage of Juice UI Controls and get a feel for what to expect from the library. We'll touch on what makes the library powerful and how you can use it to add visual elements quickly to improve the user experience.

Working at a Virtual Company

You may not know that appendTo is a virtual workplace. Currently, we have 23 people working all across the U.S. and in Europe. We each work from our own homes (or local coffee shops or restaurants when we need to be out) and use the Internet to communicate, meet, collaborate on work, and stay accountable.

Virtual work saves us a lot of time, helps us balance work and family life, and eliminates traffic frustration and commuting costs. It gives us the freedom to help out a spouse or friend, attend a kid’s event, or work when we’re away from home. It even makes us healthier (http://visual.ly/killer-commute) But it takes discipline and self-motivation. It takes more effort than plopping down in a cubicle for the requisite eight hours.

Brandon Brown Joins appendTo

appendTo is happy to welcome Brandon Brown as our newest Visual Design Engineer. Brandon is passionate about great experiences and problem solving. Originally from North New Jersey, this Jersey boy does his singing with a keyboard of another kind.

Designing for the web since 2002, Brandon has also spent time teaching user experience, design production and project management at the university level. He believes that making others excited about the awesome capabilities of strong design decisions is crucial to the future of our creative industry. Brandon's background as an adept designer moving between mediums such as video, 3D, print, and photography helps him to see solutions beyond the user interface.

When Brandon steps away from the challenges of design, you'll normally find him on his road bike, with a camera in his hand, or staring into deep space. He also builds paludariums, terrariums, and other live tanks. Brandon lives in Orlando with his cat, Pixel.
