Ceilings

Walls

While exposed rafters and beams are seen more frequently, exposed wall framing is gaining in popularity. Leaving walls uncovered creates an individual appearance not found in most custom homes. Laying bare the structural wall foundation allows for a visual manipulation of size and space, making the area look and feel larger. Again, as with the ceilings, it is important to plan ahead with wood selections.

 ]]> Before construction begins, you will be given a detailed schedule outlining when you can expect completion of your new home. It’s important to remember, however, that a construction timeline isn’t set in stone; don’t be surprised when delays occur. Also, don’t hesitate to ask your contractor if extra days have been built into the schedule to insure a more realistic time frame.

Frequently the same amount of time required for the entire design process, including permitting, ends up being about the same amount of time the overall construction takes. And whether you contract with a large nationally known construction firm or a small local one man operation, keep in the mind the general construction process works the same for both.

Simply because there are so many different trades involved, from framers to plumbers, roofers to electricians, getting everyone on schedule is like a carefully choreographed dance. Unfortunately it only takes one tradesman to create a delay. Additional delays may also occur because of out of stock materials, inclement weather and city and county inspections taking longer than expected.

While delays are inevitable in any construction process, they usually don’t disrupt the timeline too much.  Just stay realistic and schedule for them before your construction process begins and you’ll find the whole experience to be easier to manage.  In the end, having a beautiful home custom-built for you is worth any snags in the timeline.
