Quick Thoughts

It is always necessary to disambiguate between Capital One Shopping, which is a public shopping portal available to anybody, and Capital One offers, which are only available to Capital One cardholders.

Capital One Shopping is a public portal open to anyone, where rewards are only earned in the form of credit that can be redeemed for gift cards, whereas Capital One offers are earned in the form of either cash back or miles, depending on the card you’re using to access Capital One offers.

Which is better for you likely depends on how much you value miles and how high your target offer becomes for Capital One Shopping.

As of the time of writing, I have not seen an email offer any higher than the 30% back that I see on the Capital One Shopping home page. We sometimes get targeted email offers of up to 70% back when TripAdvisor is on special. At just 30% back in the form of credit that can only be redeemed for gift cards versus 25 miles per dollar, I would probably lean toward earning the additional transferable miles, but when the percentages become higher, the decision can sometimes become more difficult. Either way, it could be worth considering booking activities or airport transfers through TripAdvisor when targeted rates become high.

Keep in mind that Capital One Shopping rewards for travel-related purchases sometimes track as ineligible at first and are only credited after travel is complete. That is exactly what has happened with my past TripAdvisor bookings — they initially showed up as “ineligible”, but then became “pending” (and later “credited”) after travel was complete.

I’m not sure that the 30% back or 25 miles per dollar would be enough to get me to make a booking I wasn’t already considering, but if you do have bookings to make, this could certainly be handy. Keep in mind that these “Top Deal of the Day” offers only last until 11:59 pm Pacific Time.

When Staples offers these virtual cards, they tend to sell out within a couple of days—if not sooner—so it’s best to buy ASAP if you’re interested.

• Bilt and Blacklane have finally launched a partnership whereby Bilt Rewards members can redeem Bilt Cash one time per year for a discount toward booking a Blacklane chauffeur service ride in the Bilt app as follows:

Quick Thoughts

Blacklane is a car service facilitator that bills itself as providing a chauffeur service experience. In reality, Blacklane is just a booking platform that connects customers to local chauffeur service companies. If that sounds a lot like Uber but for chauffeury-rides, you’re on the right track.

However, Blacklane tends to be significantly more expensive than traditional rideshare services. Some price difference is warranted, given that it provides a scheduled ride with someone who has some built-in waiting time rather than an on-demand service. And in some cases, the difference in price may not seem totally unreasonable.

You can now book a Blacklane through the “Car Service” tab in the Bilt app or on the Bilt website (under “Rewards”).

Unfortunately, the experience of trying to book through Bilt isn’t intuitive. Both in the app and on the desktop site, I was trying to type in the name of my hotel (which starts with “Le”), and the only results it would give me were airport codes. I then tried typing in “Grand Hyatt Dubai” in the search box (this isn’t a hotel where I’ll be staying; I’m just using it as an example to show how poorly the system works), and it gives me a long list of airport codes that have nothing to do with the search.

If you scroll past the list of airport codes, you’ll eventually find a list of “Places”, where the Grand Hyatt Dubai hotel does show up, but I tried using the app multiple times over several days to book a ride and I didn’t realize that there was anything in the list other than airport codes (because who would repeatedly scroll beyond a list of search results that are irrelevant to the search terms?). The odd thing is that the search experience in the Blacklane app works exactly as you would expect — enter Grand Hyatt Dubai, and the Grand Hyatt Dubai is the only search result it populates.

Once you know that search quirk, you can at least use Bilt to book a Blacklane and earn an extra 1 point per dollar when booking through Bilt or redeem Bilt Cash once per year toward a ride.

I view these coupons as a good way to use up some Bilt Cash that might otherwise expire at the end of the year anyway to get a slight discount on a ride if you’re able to use one to cover a ride in full (or nearly in full). This isn’t a face-value use unless you’re already a Blacklane customer, but it will be useful in some circumstances.

It just so happens that I will need a ride to an airport in a couple of weeks where a Blacklane would be just a bit over $100, so I thought this might make for a good use of Bilt Cash. An Uber for a similar ride looks like it would ordinarily be less than $50, but scheduling one in advance would be more like $85, so Blacklane isn’t a bad alternative given other parameters (like the fact that I need the ride at a very early hour when I might otherwise have difficulty finding a rideshare driver).

I was disappointed to see that booking through the Bilt app would cost about 3.1% more than booking directly through Blacklane for the car type I wanted (I checked a different car type and Bilt was 3.6% more expensive). While those are relatively small markups, it nonetheless erodes the value of the Bilt Cash redemption. It also means that it probably isn’t worth booking through Bilt for the extra 1 point per dollar spent rather than simply booking through Blackalne, since you would effectively be buying the extra Bilt point for more than 3c.

That led me to check an airport pickup from the Grand Hyatt Dubai since I had already entered that hotel to search. For a random date ride to Dubai airport (DXB), booking through Bilt was about 9.4% more expensive than booking through Blacklane. Bilt was charging $44.34.

The same ride booked directly through Blacklane would be 148.82 AED (~$40.52).

It still might be worth using a $50 Bilt Cash coupon in that sort of situation if you’ve got Bilt Blue or Silver status and will otherwise have Bilt Cash expire, but it is worth comparing prices to know that what you’re getting makes sense for your situation.

Quick Thoughts

The ordinary transfer ratio from premium Citi cards to Leading Hotels of the World is 1,000 points to 200 Leading Hotels of the World points (5:1). Since Leading Hotels of the World points are generally worth around 8c per point toward room rates (note that there is some variance, but many hotels are close to exactly 8c per point), the ordinary transfer ratio yields about 1.6c per Citi point.

With a 25% transfer bonus, every 1,000 Citi points become 250 Leading Hotels of the World points (4:1), worth about $20 toward Leading Hotels of the World properties. That’s good for a value of about $0.02 per point.

Keep in mind that Amex recently added Leading Hotels of the World Leaders Club as a transfer partner, and the ordinary transfer ratio for Amex is 4:1, so this puts a transfer from Citi on par with one from Amex. Either can be an excellent deal, particularly considering the relatively few options left for using transferable points to good value for hotel stays.

All that said, this will be of limited use given LHW’s small footprint. However, if you have upcoming travel plans where LHW could be a fit, this could be a great deal.

The limit is nine per customer per day in-store, although some stores may allow more. Different stores appear to have different policies regarding the variable-load cards that some Staples now sell. Some folks report that fees are waived when they purchase them…others find that they aren’t. Your mileage may vary.

Quick Thoughts

Wells Fargo has a broad definition of “direct deposits,” including ACH transfers from many banks. When I did this a couple of years ago, I just scheduled an ACH from my local credit union (BECU).

The terms require the account to remain open until the 90-day qualification period ends, so it’s important to understand the requirements to avoid the $15 monthly fee. You could schedule a monthly $500 ACH deposit into the account and then transfer most of it back out to keep the account free, or just leave $1,500 in the account. There’s no early termination fee if you close the account. Still, with Wells Fargo, it’s generally considered best practice to leave it open for at least a few months to avoid getting blacklisted from future bonuses.

Quick Thoughts

Since you have to spend at least $2,000 before taxes and fees to earn 2,000 bonus points per night (capped at 10,000 bonus points), it isn’t a huge reward. That said, it’s better than earning zero bonus points if you were going to book a Homes & Villas stay anyway.

If you’re an Amex cardholder, check whether you’re targeted for this offer, which gives $350 back on stays of $1,000 or more. These will stack, which means you’d earn up to 10,000 total bonus points AND save $350, making it much more worthwhile.

Homes & Villas by Marriott is available on several shopping portals, so click through from one of those before making a reservation. You can find the current rates here and here. It’s also worth browsing the Homes & Villas website with the Capital One Shopping browser extension installed as I’ll often get targeted with much higher offers via email as a result.

Quick Thoughts

When buying third-party gift cards, you can earn 4x fuel points, saving you up to 14% on gas. To illustrate how that 14% figure is calculated, let’s say you spend $250 on gift cards during the promotion. That would earn you 1,000 fuel points, which you can redeem for $1 off per gallon on up to 35 gallons. If you can refuel to that 35-gallon limit (perhaps with a large gas tank or by refueling 2+ household vehicles at once), you’d save $35. Saving $35 on the original $250 in gift card spend amounts to a 14% discount.

If your gas tank is smaller, though, your savings won’t be as high. For example, our car holds at most 12 gallons, so we can barely save 5% on gas through these promotions, given how much we spend on gift cards. You can often get better gift card discounts through sites like Raise, so weigh your options before buying at full price from Kroger or its affiliates, such as Dillons, King Soopers, Ralphs, Fry’s, or Smith’s.

You can earn 4x fuel points on gift cards purchased online or in-store, though there are a couple of important differences between the two. If you’re buying in-store, you’ll need to load the digital coupons to your account first, whereas you’ll automatically earn 4x fuel points when buying gift cards online from Kroger.

Another thing to keep in mind is that buying gift cards in-store lets you take advantage of the many cards offering bonus spend at grocery stores right now. Kroger’s online gift card site processes payments through Blackhawk Network (the owner of GiftCards.com), so those online orders don’t count as grocery purchases.

Quick Thoughts

Leading Hotels of the World normally sells its points for 12 cents per point. On the face of it, that sounds extortionately high when you consider that most hotel loyalty program points are worth anything from 0.5 cents per point to 2 cents per point.

While 12 cents per point is high, it’s not as high as you might think, and this points sale can actually provide some good value. The 50% bonus drops the cost to 8 cents per point, the 75% bonus to 6.86 cents per point, and the 100% bonus to 6 cents per point.

It’s often possible to find Leading Hotels of the World redemptions for ~8 cents per point, so buying with a 75% or 100% bonus could save you money on the stay if you’d have otherwise paid cash rates. An important thing to bear in mind, though, is that cash rates tend to be high because Leading Hotels of the World properties are high quality. As a result, even if you’re buying at 6 cents per point and redeeming at 8 cents per point, you might still be paying a pretty penny for your stay.

Points.com processes point purchases, so buying points won’t code as a travel purchase. However, you can click through from a shopping portal to earn some additional rewards on the transaction.

Don’t forget that Leading Hotels of the World is now an Amex transfer partner, so you can transfer Membership Rewards points at a 4:1 ratio (or from Citi ThankYou Rewards at 5:1). Through September 30th, you can get 120 days of matched elite status if you register for the promo and take one eligible United flight into or out of Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD) within the next 90 days, or if you have taken one within the previous 30 days.

To extend that through the entire next year, you only need to take 2 qualifying United or United Express flights within the challenge period, instead of the minimum of five flights required for the normal challenge. Quick Thoughts

This Chicago-targeted promotion is similar to the standard status match the airline offers: the temporary status doesn’t begin until after your first post-registration flight (the “activating flight”), and it’s then valid for 120 days from that point.

It differs in a couple of key ways, however:

• It only requires 2 Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF), regardless of which status you’re matching to. The standard promo requires 5 for Silver, 10 for Gold, 15 for Platinum, and 20 for Premier 1K
• PQP earned from credit cards counts towards the requirements.

I assume this includes PQP earned from welcome offers, like the 2,000 currently available via the United℠ Business and United Club℠ Business cards, or the 500 available from the United Quest℠ card. Since you only need 1700 PQP to keep Silver, the welcome offer on either business card would get you there.

United doesn’t award PQP easily; you earn 1 per $15 in spend on the business or consumer United Club℠ cards and 1 per $20 in spend on the rest. Additionally, there are maximum caps on the amount of PQP that you can earn in a year, ranging from 1,000 to 28,000.

That said, if you were approved for the Club Business card (as an example), you’d get 2,000 PQP from the welcome offer, which would get you to Silver immediately, if that’s all you wanted. IF you matched higher, you’d need to spend the following amounts (including what you spend on the welcome offer), less any PQP that you might earn directly from flying:

• Gold – $21K (1,400 PQP)
• Platinum – $45K (3,000 PQP)
• Premier 1K – $82.5K (5,500 PQP)

You could do the same thing with the welcome offer for the regular United Business card, but the spending requirements would be 33% higher because you only earn 1 PQP/$20 in spend. Like the normal version of the promotion, anyone who completes this challenge after 1/1/27 will keep the matched level through January 2029. Given that, it makes the most sense to try to register as close to 9/30 as possible, then complete the PQP requirements sometime after January 1st, since you would have 120 days from the activating flight date.

That certainly is a lot of spend, but I imagine some folks would be perfectly willing to shell out ~$40-$80 for more than two years of United Platinum or Premier 1K status, especially since they’d undoubtedly be using that status on actual flights, which would decrease the spend required.

While United publishes the table above to indicate which statuses from other airlines correspond to the various United MileagePlus status levels, the chart is a “partial list.” In other words, if you have status with an unlisted airline, you aren’t necessarily out of luck.

It’s worth noting that United doesn’t specify what it considers the “Chicago metro area,” but I would assume it’s a fairly liberal interpretation. If you’re in doubt, I would confirm that you qualify prior to registering for the promo.

Quick Thoughts

If you’ll be staying at Best Western properties this Fall or Winter, this promotion gives you the opportunity to save up to 20% on your stay. That’s a great deal, but the most important thing to note is that the $20 bonus cards expire on February 28, 2027, which gives you ~6 months to redeem them. The $100 cards don’t expire.

Best Western apparently allows you to redeem gift cards when making a reservation, but I’m not sure whether their bonus cards can be redeemed the same way, or whether there’s a limit on how many you can redeem on one online booking, if that is possible.

The terms say this offer isn’t valid with any other promotion or discount, but that’s not entirely true. It won’t stack with some other kind of gift card discount, but you will still be eligible to earn bonus points from Best Western promotions, like AAA discounts or booking your stay through a shopping portal for cashback/rewards, etc.

Quick Thoughts

This is an excellent deal given the fairly low amount you’d need to spend to earn the bonus miles, the fact that it’s valid on economy flights, and that it’s valid on both one-way and round-trip tickets.

One-way flights from New York and Boston to Paris or Amsterdam on Air France or KLM can be as low as $300, while round-trip flights start at $500. Earning 10,000 bonus miles on top of the miles you’ll earn as standard on a potentially $300 fare is very generous.

Your end destination doesn’t have to be Paris or Amsterdam; it can be any destination served by Air France or KLM, as long as you fly to or via one of those two hubs.

Capital One Shopping and Capital One Offers have boosted StubHub rates today. I’m seeing 30% cashback or 20X miles, but some people may have even better targeted rates.

This would be an especially great day to redeem your July-December StubHub credit for those with a Chase Sapphire Reserve® card. This is Capital One Shopping’s “Offer of the Day,” so you won’t see it by searching. Instead, scroll down on the home page until you find the offer. Capital One Shopping is a shopping portal that’s available to anyone, even if you don’t have Capital One credit cards. If you do have any of their cards, be sure to check Capital One Offers too, a portal that’s available for cardholders only.

To view your Capital One Offers, log in to your Capital One account and scroll down to the section where it says ‘Activate shopping offers.’ Click on ‘View all offers’ and on the next screen near the top you should see your StubHub rate. If you have a card that earns miles, you’ll earn miles. If you have a card that earns cashback, you’ll earn that as cashback.

These boosted rates are especially appealing for anyone with a Chase Sapphire Reserve card. That’s because the personal version of that card (but not the business version) has a $150 StubHub credit for January to June each year and another $150 credit for July to December. If you haven’t redeemed your credit yet, this might be the most rewarding opportunity you’re going to get.

Some people have had trouble getting Capital One Offers to trigger when using cards from other issuers. If that happens, even though the terms say it’s allowed, Capital One is usually no help. I’ve never personally had that happen, but if you are using a non-C1 card, it may be prudent to use Capital One Shopping instead.

This latest promotion gives 2X points on stays, an additional 5,000 bonus points for stays of three or more nights, and purports to also give savings of up to 25% on your room rate.

Quick Thoughts

In order to earn the bonus points from this promotion, you have to book the specific rate that lists the promotion details. Based upon the searches that I did, this promo rate is either the same as or cheaper than the standard rate, so it doesn’t seem like you’re paying a premium for the additional points. I didn’t see any cheaper rates listed like an advance purchase rate, but it might also be worth running searches from the Wyndham homepage rather than from the promo page in case other non-promo rates are available.

It’ll also be worth checking pricing with Caesars Rewards directly. Not only might that pricing be lower, but you can also click through from a shopping portal, as well as stack it with Caesars Rewards Amex Offers, Chase Offers, and/or Citi Offers.

Quick Thoughts

The terms state that this Caesars Rewards Citi Offer can’t be combined or stacked with other offers, but that’s not necessarily true depending on the offer.

For example, you could split the cost of your stay across two or more cards in order to take advantage of this Citi Offer on two or more of your cards, or to also utilize a Caesars Rewards Amex Offer and/or Chase Offer. You can also click through to Caesars from a shopping portal to book your stay and earn additional rewards.

What won’t (or likely won’t) stack is the SimplyMiles card-linked offer that’s giving 1,160 American Airlines AAdvantage miles + 1,160 Loyalty Points when spending $250. In the past it was possible to stack Citi Offers and SimplyMiles offers, but that opportunity ended in the last couple of years.

Note that this Citi Offer requires $250+ spend in a single transaction, rather than it also being valid across two or more transactions. The terms state that the offer is only valid on your room rate, but if you charge anything else to your room (such as meals, parking, etc.), those costs should count towards the $250 spending threshold. The $250 spending amount can also include taxes and fees on your stay, not just the base room rate.

Quick Thoughts

If you were to spend $2,000 exactly, getting $250 back is a 12.5% return. That’s a pretty good return when it comes to flight costs, although it does necessitate spending a good chunk of change on flights in the first place. You also have to book through Amex Travel rather than directly with Delta which could introduce a layer of complexity in the event of irregular operations.

It looks like this offer is only being targeted at Platinum and Centurion cardholders, but it’s worth checking your other cards too just in case the same—or a similar—offer shows up on any of those.

Quick Thoughts

If you’re not familiar with how IHG Points + Cash bookings work, you redeem a certain number of points, plus you pay a cash co-pay for the rest of the cost. That cash co-pay is, in effect, buying the additional points needed to book the room. As a result, if you subsequently cancel the stay you’ll get the refund entirely in points, rather than a refund of both the points and cash.

Ordinarily, this can be a good way to buy points at a discount, with the cost per point only being slightly more than during points sales when IHG offers a 100% bonus when buying points. The cash and points portions can vary slightly from property to property, plus the different thresholds in pricing for any given room offer different values.

For example, take this Candlewood Suites hotel. You can redeem 33K points for a standard award stay, or anything ranging from 8K-29K points plus a cash co-pay ranging from $127 down to $28. As you can see, if you’re targeted for this Points + Cash promotion, you’ll see the regular cash price struck through, with the discounted amount displayed beneath.

Those different thresholds buy IHG points at different prices. At the high end, booking the 29K points + $28 rate means you’re buying 4K points for $28 which is a 0.7 cents per point rate. At the other end of the spectrum, booking the 8K + $127 rate means you’re buying 25K points for $127 which is a 0.51 cents per point rate.

That’s better than normal Points + Cash pricing, but it’s still ever-so-slightly more expensive than the current 100% points sale which means you can buy the points for 0.5 cents per point.

It’s worth knowing about—particularly if you’ll be booking a cheap one day car rental—because you’ll earn 5,000 bonus I Prefer points with each Sixt rental.

Quick Thoughts

Our Reasonable Redemption Value for I Prefer points is 0.5 cents per point, so 5,000 points are worth ~$25. That’s a decent return on spend if you’re just booking a cheap rental for 24 hours, although it can’t be too cheap: the terms state that it has to cost at least €25 (or local equivalent) before taxes and fees.

Seeing as this partnership requires the usage of a Preferred Hotels & Resorts corporate code, it might be possible to stack the 5,000 bonus points offer with shopping portal rewards. The terms do state though that a combination of different promotional programs is not possible; whether that’s enforced in this way is another matter.

However, it should definitely stack with card-linked spending offers for Sixt such as a 10% Citi Offer or this Amex Offer giving $100 back when spending $500.

Wyndham is marketing this as a 3 for 1 promotion because these properties usually cost 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 points per night, while with this promotion you’ll get three nights for the price of one.

That could be an excellent deal, particularly if you’re a Wyndham credit cardholder. That’s because—depending on your card and when you applied for it—you’ll get an additional discount of 10%-25% on the stay. If you have the new Wyndham Rewards Earner Premier card, its 25% discount will reduce the total cost to 5,625, 11,250, or 22,500 points total depending on whether you book a 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 point property. That would make the nightly price as low as 1,875 which would be a superb deal, provided you don’t mind the catch with this promotion.

And that catch is that you have to attend a timeshare presentation during your stay. I did a Wyndham timeshare presentation eight years ago (albeit not during an actual stay) and it wasn’t terrible—you just need to ensure you can say no.

You have to buy the package by September 14, but it’s valid on stays through January 31, 2027.
