When buying third-party gift cards, you can earn 4x fuel points, saving you up to 14% on gas. To illustrate how that 14% figure is calculated, let’s say you spend $250 on gift cards during the promotion. That would earn you 1,000 fuel points, which can be redeemed for $1 off per gallon on up to 35 gallons. If you’re able to refuel to that 35-gallon limit (perhaps with a large gas tank or refueling 2+ household vehicles at once), you’d save $35. Saving $35 on the original $250 in gift card spend amounts to a 14% discount.

If your gas tank is smaller, though, your savings won’t be as high. For example, our car holds at most 12 gallons, so we can barely save 5% on gas through these promotions, given how much we spend on gift cards. You can often get better discounts on gift cards through sites like Raise, so weigh up all your options before buying them at full price from Kroger or its affiliates, such as Dillons, King Soopers, Ralphs, Fry’s, or Smith’s.

You can earn 4x fuel points on gift cards purchased online or in-store, though there are a couple of important differences between the two. If you’ll be buying in-store, you have to load the digital coupons to your account first, whereas you’ll automatically earn 4x fuel points when buying gift cards online from Kroger.

The other thing to bear in mind is that buying gift cards in-store lets you take advantage of the plethora of cards offering bonus spend at grocery stores right now. Kroger’s online gift card site processes payments through Blackhawk Network (the owner of GiftCards.com), so those online orders don’t count as grocery purchases.

Quick Thoughts

Based on the terms, you only have to leave the money in the bank for ~31 days to get the bonus. This is because you have to deposit $25 initially, then add the remainder within 30 days of account opening. Then, you have to maintain that balance for 60 days after account opening.

It’s important to note that the net upside is a bit lower than the bonus. There are plenty of ways to earn ~4-5% interest right now with savings accounts and CDs, so you’re effectively losing 31 days’ worth of interest on the money you put in. Given that, the opportunity cost is ~$100 for the $25K option, ~$40 for the $10K option, or ~$10 when depositing $2.5K.

That said, the larger bonus still corresponds to a ~40% annual interest rate, an incredible return. At the same time, there’s a minimum time commitment and more flexibility with your money. The smaller version is simply a no-brainer if you have $2,500 that you can free up for a month.

Wells Fargo periodically runs a very similar promotion on its personal Way2Save accounts, but the bonus is only $525 for a $25K deposit requirement, AND you have to keep the money in the account for 61 days instead of 31. This business checking offer is vastly superior.

Do note that there is a $15 monthly fee, which can be waived only with a $500 minimum daily balance (or a $1K average ledger balance). That’s obviously not an issue when you have the required amount in the account, but remember to factor it into the deposit or add $500 initially to avoid the fee being deducted in the first month.

While I haven’t rented often rented via Sixt, I’ve recently been finding some solid deals on rentals via Sixt. I’ve also been consistently seeing targeted Capital One Shopping offers for 30% or more back at Sixt (I received such an offer in a couple of emails just today), up to 45% back. That’s certainly made it worth booking a couple of Sixt rentals, so I could see the potential for a nice stack with this offer.

That said, I usually avoid paying for car rentals with an Amex because of Amex’s inferior rental car coverage. That said, given the savings in this case, it might be worth paying a little extra for coverage to get a good stack.

If you’ve been thinking about joining Costco or looking to add a bit more space to your annual 2% rebate (like I often am), this could be a good opportunity to get off the fence and try it for a year.

Normally, Costco breaks these promos into two tiers: $40 for Gold memberships and $60 for Executive. This time, it’s split the difference and is offering $50 regardless of which one you select, making it an excellent deal for the $65/year Gold version.

Quick Thoughts

$100 back on $500 spend at Preferred Hotels locations is a very nice deal. This’ll work even on award stays if you have room charges of $500 or more for things like meals, parking, spa treatments, etc.

If the cost of your stay will be $1,000 or more and you have this Preferred Hotels Amex Offer on more than one household card, you can ask the hotel to split the bill across those cards to earn more than one $100 statement credit.

Be sure to click through from a shopping portal before booking a paid stay. I’ve been targeted for a Capital One Shopping offer that gives $100 back on a $330+ Preferred Hotels stay, so that would be a superb stacking opportunity.

This must be relatively widely targeted. I checked both mine and my wife’s accounts after Stephen noticed the offer this morning; we had it on ~80% of our cards. That’s especially salient here because, unlike Amex, Chase allows you to redeem offers on multiple cards, so you could theoretically get 10% off on several rides by switching payments cards after each one.

Quick Thoughts

Hilton Grand Vacations releases variations on this basic offer somewhat regularly. This particular one is applicable for many more locations than usual; ten in total, including options in Hawai’i, California, Utah, Arizona, and Washington, DC. Depending on when you stay, the cash cost for many lodging options would be an excellent deal… and that’s before considering the points.

In exchange for agreeing to attend a 2-hour timeshare presentation, you get 2-4 nights’ lodging and 125,000 Hilton Honors Points for $ 299-$1099 + tax (and an additional $19.95 for changes made up to 7 days prior to arrival). You buy the package now and then have 12 months from the date of purchase to use it. Note that the points will not post until after you travel, so you won’t get them instantly.

Our reasonable redemption value for Hilton Honors Points is .35 cents per point, so you’re getting around $425 in value from the points alone. Throw in several nights’ lodging and the deal gets interesting, especially if you already need to travel to one of the included destinations.

Timeshare presentations are notorious for being somewhat exhausting affairs. To prepare, it’s probably helpful to read Stephen Pepper’s Timeshare Presentation Survival Guide: Get your “No” face on.

Quick Thoughts

This is better than the standard checking account offer Wells Fargo has had out for a couple of years, which it keeps extending. You get an extra $75 for the effort, and the direct deposit requirement has again decreased to $1,000 from $3,000.

Wells Fargo has a broad definition of “direct deposits,” including ACH transfers from many banks. When I did this a couple of years ago, I just scheduled an ACH from my local credit union (BECU).

The terms require the account to remain open until the 90-day qualification period ends, so it’s important to understand the requirements to avoid the $15 monthly fee. You could schedule a monthly $500 ACH deposit into the account and then transfer most of it back out to keep the account free, or just leave $1,500 in the account. There’s no early termination fee if you close the account. Still, with Wells Fargo, it’s generally considered best practice to leave it open for at least a few months to avoid getting blacklisted from future bonuses.

Quick Thoughts

Although this isn’t valid at all Hyatt properties, Hyatt Place makes up a large proportion of Hyatt’s portfolio, so it’s a more useful promotion for many members than if it only included brands with fewer locations like Park Hyatt.

If you stay exactly three nights at eligible properties during the promo period, you’ll earn 1,000 bonus points per night. If you have a three-night stay at a Hyatt Place and haven’t already maxed out Hyatt’s portfolio-wide promo, you get another 2,000 points for a total of 5K, or ~1,666 points per night.

Note that award stays count too, so this could potentially be worth a mattress run. If you have a category 1 property near you with three nights of lowest award availability during the promo dates, your net cost would be 4,000 points, or an average of only ~1,333 points per night.

It could potentially get even better than that. At both the 20– and 30-night Milestone Rewards levels, one option is a 2K Next Stay Award, which awards 2,000 bonus points after your next stay at Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, or Hyatt Studios properties within 180 days of selecting that reward. If you have one, your net cost for a three-night stay would be only 2,000 points, or ~666 per night.

While Trip.com’s rates aren’t quite as high as some we’ve seen on other travel sites recently (such as Viator), they’re still far better in many cases than you’ll get through other shopping portals.

Via Capital One Offers, I’m seeing rates of up to 16X miles depending on the type of booking. You can see the breakdown at the top of this post, although the rates available to you might be different than what I have. We only have miles-earning cards, but if you have cashback-earning cards then you’ll see the return as a cashback percentage instead.

You can find Capital One Offers by logging in to your account and scrolling down to the section labeled ‘Activate shopping offers’ or by clicking the link above. Click on ‘View all offers,’ and you should see Trip.com listed towards the top.

Slightly better rates are available via Capital One Shopping – the shopping portal available to anyone, even if you don’t have any Capital One credit cards. I received an email this morning with the following breakdown:

• Completed Hotel Stay – 16.5% Rewards
• Car Rental – 16.5% Rewards
• Airport Transfer Booking – 11% Rewards
• Tours – 5.5% Rewards
• Cruise – 4% Rewards
• Completed Flight – 3% Rewards

Past experience suggests that even higher rates might be sent out via email on a targeted basis later in the day, so be sure to check your emails if any Trip.com bookings are on the cards for you.

Note that, with Capital One Offers, the rewards you earn come as transferable miles or straight cashback, depending on whether you have miles-earning or cashback-earning cards. With Capital One Shopping, you earn cashback that can only be redeemed for select gift card brands, so that should be taken into account when deciding which of the two portal types works best for you.

Quick Thoughts

This can be a great bonus as it means the person you refer can essentially get a $50 item for free after cash back, and you get $50, 5,000 Membership Rewards points, or 5,000 Bilt points for helping them do it. When you sign up for Rakuten, your account preference is set to earn cash back by default, but you can switch your earning preference to Membership Rewards or Bilt points. Note that the rewards will only convert to 5,000 Bilt points if you have Bilt status, otherwise they’ll transfer on a 2:1 ratio which means you’ll only end up with 2,500 Bilt points.

Just make sure your referees sign up by September 30. They then have 90 days to make $50 in purchases through Rakuten, which should be fairly easy – it’s a good deal for them as well.

An 8% statement credit isn’t a huge return, but it’s a decent enough offer considering there’s no minimum spend requirement and so it’s valid on cheap activities too.

With a limit of $10 total cashback, you’ll max this out when spending $125 across one or two transactions. If you’ll be booking a more expensive activity for two or more people and you have the offer on more than one credit card, you could book the tickets separately in order to take advantage of multiple statement credits.

Seeing as this is a card-linked spending offer, it’ll stack nicely with shopping portal rewards. Viator and TripAdvisor Experiences are often available at high portal rates, especially through Capital One Shopping where you can often get targeted for rates of 20%-35% back.

Quick Thoughts

Earning 10X points on up to $500 of spend on the new authorized user card(s) is a decent return on spend, especially considering you don’t have to actually hit that $500 spending cap in order to earn 10X on any of that spend.

This offer was sent to a Hawaiian Airlines credit cardholder, but there will likely be similar offers sent to targeted cardholders of other Barclays cobranded cards.

One consideration before taking advantage of this type of deal is that the authorized user cards will affect the 5/24 status of the authorized user.

Now, if the authorized user card pushes them over that five card threshold, they can call the Chase reconsideration line and ask for it not to be counted towards their 5/24 count. Chase phone reps aren’t always willing to ignore authorized user cards though; even if they are, it’s up to you whether it’s worth potentially adding more hassle in the future for your P2 for the sake of earning 10X points on a maximum of $500 spend.

Quick Thoughts

This is a handy offer if you’re planning on booking paid airfare with Cathay Pacific. The $150 statement credit should also get triggered when booking award flights using Asia Miles if the taxes and fees total $1,000 or more and are charged in US dollars rather than HK dollars. This Amex Offer is valid on one or more transactions, so it won’t matter if you’re booking flights for two or more people and payment for each person’s ticket is processed separately.

Something important to be aware of is that flights have to originate in the US. That means one way flights departing the US or round trip flights where the first flight departs from the US are eligible but not, say, a one way flight from Hong Kong to the US.

At first glance, this seemed like a ridiculously generous offer, as the email from American Airlines initially made it seem like you’d get 25,000 bonus miles just for registering for the program. Sadly, that’s not the whole story based on the full terms and conditions.

That’s because you have to meet the program’s standard requirements to trigger the bonus. That involves having at least five active travelers and the business spending at least $5,000 in a calendar year.

However, reader Andrew has confirmed that if you have the Citi®/AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard®, those requirements are waived, and the 25K bonus miles will be awarded instantly. That makes this a no-brainer deal if you have that card.

inKind has had a number of Amex Offers and other discounts over the past couple of years. I ignored it for a while, but then finally signed up and have enjoyed the couple of chances I’ve had to use it.

For those unaware, inKind is a payment app. Participating restaurants allow you to settle your restaurant tab within the app, eliminating the need to give your credit card to the server (and wait for them to return with it). I was skeptical as to how useful this would be, but I’ve used it several times now and found it easy to use and convenient to simply type the check number into the app and settle the bill without any wait time.

The drawback, of course, is that you’re limited to restaurants that accept inKind payments. They certainly aren’t everywhere, though the footprint seems to be growing. Nick used it at Chef José Andrés’s Jaleo DC and Michelin-starred Gramercy Tavern in New York City, and I’ve been able to use it at several well-regarded spots in Seattle.

If you have a Costco Executive membership, you’ll also earn 2% back on the purchase as that’s earned even on gift card purchases like these.

Quick Thoughts

This isn’t the most rewarding promotion ever, but it’s worth registering if you’re eligible for it. To be eligible, you need Titanium or higher status with Marriott or Gold or higher status with United and have already linked your United and Marriott accounts. If you haven’t linked those before, you can do that here if you have United status or here if you have Marriott status. Remember to also register for this limited time promotion after linking your two accounts.

The way it works is that every time you have both a paid flight with United and a paid stay with Marriott, you’ll earn 1,500 bonus miles and 2,000 bonus points. The flight and stay don’t have to occur during the same trip, so you could take a United flight now and have a Marriott stay in several weeks time and still earn the two bonuses. Taking only two flights or booking only two stays won’t earn you any bonuses though—you’ll only earn the bonuses when having both a new flight element and a new stay element.
