Today, April 28, 2023, sees national icon Wembley Stadium celebrate its 100th anniversary
Since it first opened its doors 100 years ago, Wembley Stadium, connected by EE, has been home to some of the most historic and memorable moments of the last century.
Many of the stars associated with those moments have now been captured in a celebratory piece of artwork to mark the stadium’s landmark birthday.
The Wembley 100 Icons image features famous names from the worlds of football, sport, music, and politics, who have all performed at the iconic stadium in the last 100 years. It includes sporting icons such as Muhammed Ali, Bobby Moore, Lionel Messi, David Beckham, Leah Williamson and Harry Kane alongside music legends Paul McCartney, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, and Beyonce. Sir Geoff Hurst, England’s hat-trick hero from 1966, is also one of those to appear in the artwork. He said he will always have a special affinity with the stadium, adding: “Wembley will always have a very special place in my heart for obvious reasons. It’s the place where I enjoyed one of the greatest days in my life and a venue, I still love going back to each time because of the memories it evokes.

“To perform at Wembley is every footballer’s dream. I feel honoured to be associated with one of the stadium’s greatest footballing moments ever and I can still recall the noise, colour, and atmosphere of the time we did our celebratory lap. What a place. What a memory. Happy Birthday Wembley.”

Hurst’s performance at Wembley also features in a list of 100 History Making Moments put together by the stadium team to mark the momentous milestone. It combines memorable sporting and music feats alongside some of the more unusual events to have taken place at the stadium during that time, including greyhound racing, speedway World Championships, the Olympics (twice), ski-jumping and American stunt man Evil Knievel jumping 13 buses on his motorbike in 1975.

The stadium received thousands of recollections of moments, from people whose lives were forever enriched by their trip to the national stadium.
Adrian Steel and his wife Wendy got married at the new Wembley Stadium in 2007. They are the only couple ever to get special dispensation to exchange their vows on the centre circle of the famous hallowed turf.
The couple waited four years for the new stadium to open and their wish was granted when they got the opportunity to hire out the stadium for their big day.
The ceremony was witnessed by 250 family and friends seated in the stands and served as a test event for the stadium’s grand opening a week later – when Chelsea took on Manchester United in the FA Cup Final. Adrian commented: “It was a dream come true and the perfect match of the day.”
Another moment came from Jonathan Smith from Southampton. His grandad William attended the 1923 FA Cup Final and secured a programme from that day. In 1978 when he was 81, William penned a letter to young Jonathan telling him to look after and treasure the programme, because it would be quite the ‘curiosity’ in 2023 when Wembley was 100 years old.
Jonathan said: “The programme is one of my most prized possessions and is particularly poignant at this moment in time as Wembley celebrates its 100th birthday.”
As part of the birthday celebrations stars from the worlds of music and sport have sent congratulatory messages to the stadium which will be showcased on social media throughout today (Friday, 28 April). Follow @WembleyStadium on Twitter and Instagram to join in the action.
The stadium will also be welcoming around 2,000 members of the local community and fans for a free tour of the stadium following an invite on social media earlier this week.

ASA Foundations mission is to Support, Transform and Save the Lives of those affected by Autoimmune Disease.

In the UK, 7%, or 4 million people, are known to live with at least one autoimmune condition. There are nearly 100 identified autoimmune diseases, with incidence rising 9% each year. This is predicted to be significantly higher now that we are aware of Long-COVID. As a group they are a bigger killer than cancer and include conditions such as MS, Alzheimer’s, lupus, scleroderma, endometriosis, asthma, autism, Parkinson’s, Crohn’s, eczema, psoriasis and many more. Even cancer is related as it is an autoimmune dysfunction. 

Autoimmune Support & Awareness Foundation UK (ASA Foundation) is a registered UK charity. It was established by Asal Shirazi BEM in late 2022, after many years of her personal advocacy and as a direct response to the lack of information available for sufferers combined with the limited training provided to the primary care sector. 

Asal has a life limiting condition called Diffuse Systemic Scleroderma, Sjogren’s, Raynaud’s, Hashimoto’s, lupus plus many more, all autoimmune conditions. She was initially misdiagnosed which has led to more internal damage, affecting her physical and mental health. There are millions like her who have been mis or late diagnosed and thus a bigger burden on the NHS due to late treatment and unnecessary cost. 

According to Asal, “It’s all down to awareness and education. We need everyone to be able to spot the signs and be able to access the right kind of tests quickly”. In many ways COVID has helped people be more aware of their bodies, they now need to recognise that there are many more autoimmune conditions which can be equally as dangerous if undetected.

What is clear is that the emotional and mental impact on an individual can be life-changing and debilitating; depression, anxiety, and loneliness are common side-effects of a diagnosis. It is predicted that 66% of people living with autoimmune diseases have mental health problems and 68% of people with autoimmune diseases are unemployed or unable to work full-time.

The NHS is under ever increasing pressure with waiting lists only set to get longer. But the alternative doesn’t need to be expensive private healthcare, there is another way. In response to this ASA Foundation UK has recently partnered with Living Room Health. “Speed to Diagnosis is key if we are to deal with growing number of people affected by Autoimmune Disease. We are delighted to be able to partner with Living Room Health to be able to make this happen” says Prof Ash Professor Ash Mosahebi, Consultant Plastic Surgeon – MBBS FRCS FRCS(PLAST) PHD MBA. Professor Mosahebi is the head of one of the largest plastic surgery teaching units at a leading London hospital. He carries out reconstructive surgery for the after effects of cancer and deals with patients deformed by the effects of autoimmune disease every day. Living Room Health is making private healthcare more accessible to take the burden off the NHS. They offer a self-pay solution for diagnosis and treatment and have created an immediate, straightforward, and cost-effective approach to healthcare, providing same day appointments and a range of services and treatments from MRIs to joint pain management to GP services.

In its inaugural year, the King’s Award for Enterprise follows 57 years of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, where previous winners included J.P Morgan, iCandy, Veolia and Willmott Dixon.

The next celebratory steps for PCE include a listing in a special edition of the London Gazette, published in April, which will carry the names of all of the winners. The London Gazette is the oldest English newspaper and is an official journal of record of the British Government. A Grant of Appointment ceremony will take place at PCE’s office (date tba) with the county’s Lord Lieutenant and local VIPs. The Lord Lieutenant is His Majesty The King’s local representative and will personally present a crystal trophy to the PCE team. In addition, CEO, James Cook will visit Buckingham Palace in the summer for a celebratory reception, which is hosted by His Majesty King Charles III.

The name of the gin, “1960” represents the year The Belfry was founded. Many of its botanicals have been carefully selected from the resort. Roses and lavender picked from the resort’s courtyard, willow from the golf courses and honey harvested from its very own “Belfry Bees.”

Tasting notes for 1960 describe it as having a traditional juniper heart with a characterful citrus forward. “It was very important to us to ensure that the gin is reflective of the beautiful environment at The Belfry and of our commitment to sustainability. To achieve this, we have had botanicals and produce from across the resort incorporated into the blend, something we felt was absolutely crucial to do. We hope our guests love 1960 as much as we do!”

In line with environmental policies at The Belfry, once empty all 1960 bottles from the resort will be sent to the distillery to be refilled and returned.

At the prestigious IWSC 2023 awards, the quality of the new gin was recognised with a much-coveted Bronze Medal in the London Dry “taste” category.

In terms of prize money, Grand National winners earn up to 9 times more than Olympic medal winners. This year, the winner’s prize pot for the Grand National horse is a whopping £561,000, compared to only £63,870 for Olympic athletes. His younger brother Owen, who survived the attack, and his mother Suzy, from Wednesbury, went on to set up the Smile For Joel charity in his memory, helping families affected by murder and violence.
The charity has now launched the Joel Richards Development Fund to help young referees who may be struggling with costs.
Suzy said: “We are so proud to be able to offer this help to young referees in Joel’s memory. Whether it’s kit or training costs, or maybe they’ve been asked to ref abroad but can't afford to travel – whatever it is we can help.
“Joel was a Level 4 referee at the age of 19 and his dream was to become a Premier League referee. He was robbed of that dream, but now we want to give someone else that opportunity.
“We felt we wanted to do this for Joel and we know it’s something he would be proud to be part of.”
Owen added: “The aim of this fund is to be able to reward those young referees who give back to those around them and encourage them to continue on in their football journey in the same way we know Joel would be doing if we were lucky enough to have him with us.
“I believe this is something that reflects and represents who Joel was as a character. He would be tremendously proud to have this in his name."
The charity had previously run the Joel Richards Foundation Legacy Fund in partnership with Birmingham FA.
It is now being relaunched as the Joel Richards Development Fund in collaboration with the Referees’ Association and has a much wider reach and scope.
It is open to young referees aged between 16 and 26 who have been a paying member of the Referees’ Association for two years.
