The business, headquartered in Birmingham and with a distribution and logistics centre in Aylesbury, focusses on high-quality supply chain solutions for palletised freight distribution, haulage, warehousing and fulfilment. With a team of more than 120 people and 60 owned vehicles covering all key industrial regions within the UK mainland, the company handles over 300,000 shipments per annum through its shareholding in Pallet-Track, and its own haulage and distribution fleet.

The announcement comes at a time when businesses in the sector are under increasing pressure to address their environmental impact, whilst maintaining service levels and profit margins in a highly competitive market. For the past five years Mobile PPL has been operating under the ISO14001 environment management framework, which has dictated decision making on everything from machinery and equipment to warehousing and administration, to reduce emissions and stay within the criteria.

The company first started its journey to carbon neutrality in 2022 by understanding customer expectations and framing that against internal ambitions and motivations. The process was completed at the end of March 2023 through its partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain, a UK offsetting programme. This allows Mobile PPL to offset its environmental impact by investing in projects to remove Carbon Dioxide and Greenhouse Gases from the atmosphere.

Mobile PPL is using this milestone to cement its ambition to become a Zero Emissions business by 2037. Mobile PPL hopes that others in the industry will follow suit, thereby creating the necessary demand to accelerate research and investment in more sustainable technology for the haulage sector. Current technology does not allow any national haulage and distribution business to be Zero Emissions.

The Mobile PPL Environment Pledge

]]> The announcement follows an 11-year road trial of longer semi-trailers of up to 18.55 metres – over two meters above the standard size – which will be allowed on Britain’s roads from 31st May.
The transport industry welcomed the move, saying it would mean more goods could be transported by fewer vehicles, cutting emissions and increasing efficiency.
However, the Campaign for Better Transport has issued a warning over the larger tail swing, where their rear end covers a bigger area when turning, which it claims could put vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists at risk.
Emily Hardy, Marketing Manager UK, Brigade Electronics Ltd, said: “To Brigade, the continuing number of deaths involving HGVs and vulnerable road users is simply shocking.
“As we see larger lorries hitting the UK’s streets, fleet operators must take a fresh look at their camera and sensor technology.
“Older iterations of sensors were less intelligent and could create false alerts arising from the articulation of the trailer, so it was not practical to have the technology fitted to them.
“But state-of-the-art systems, like Brigade’s new Radar Predict, use artificial intelligence to detect whether the vehicle has a trailer and only alerts the driver of the risk of a collision; reducing false alerts.
“The system is also ideal for preventing sideswipes on motorways.”
The Government’s announcement comes as Transport for London’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS) is proposing that vehicles should have sensors to cover trailers.
Brigade’s Radar Predict is one of the most technically sophisticated products in Brigade’s portfolio.
It was developed as a highly accurate collision detection system using artificial intelligence (AI) to determine potential collisions and warn the driver with sufficient time for an intervention. As a predictive system that minimises false alerts, Radar Predict can detect vulnerable road users up to five metres from the side of the vehicle, seven metres in front of the vehicle and up to 30 metres to the rear of the vehicle’s cabin.
Radar Predict constantly gathers object detection data such as the speed, direction, acceleration, and turning rate of a vehicle using radar technology.
It also collects information from the cyclist or other vulnerable road user, for example, their speed and distance from the lorry.
This data is then put through a processor created by Brigade technology partners to calculate the point of collision with road users alongside the vehicle, giving warnings to the driver of any risks through a visual display teamed with audible warnings.

A Grant of Appointment ceremony will take place at PCE’s office (date tba) with the county’s Lord Lieutenant and local VIPs. The Lord Lieutenant is His Majesty The King’s local representative and will personally present a crystal trophy to the PCE team. In addition, CEO, James Cook will visit Buckingham Palace in the summer for a celebratory reception, which is hosted by His Majesty King Charles III.

- UNOPS and iRAP have established a partnership to enhance support for the road sector in planning, designing and building safer roads.

- The partnership aims to improve road infrastructure safety and reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on roads worldwide by implementing iRAP’s globally recognised methodology, tools and training to identify high-risk road sections, inform evidence-based investment in safety upgrades and build road safety capacity in countries.

- By collaborating on advocacy, capacity-building, knowledge sharing, and technical assistance, the partnership aims to support countries in achieving Global Road Safety Performance Targets and halving road deaths and injuries by 2030.

UNOPS and the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) signed the agreement today in Manila, Philippines, in the presence of Mr. Jean Todt, United Nations Special Envoy on Road Safety and former President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), as part of the Road Safety Initiative.

The agreement will allow UNOPS and iRAP to work together in outreach and advocacy to improve global road safety, capacity-building activities, sharing and transfer of knowledge and technical assistance on projects and project implementation, among others.

Every year, around 1.23 million people are killed and nearly 50 million are injured on roadways around the world. According to the World Health Organization, there is no greater threat to the lives of people between 5 to 29 years old.

The UN has called for greater global efforts to reduce traffic deaths and injuries by half by 2030. “One of the best ways to remember and honour the victims is by doing our part to make roads safer around the world”, said UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, in his last message to mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, observed annually on 20 November.

In addition, the agreement will augment the mutual capacity and outreach of both organizations, allowing them to support countries towards a more comprehensive and robust road safety management and implementation approach and implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. In doing so, the agreement will support countries in achieving Global Road Safety Performance Targets 3 and 4:
Target 3 – By 2030, all new roads achieve technical standards for all road users that take into account road safety or meet a three-star rating or better
Target 4 – By 2030, more than 75% of travel on existing roads is on roads that meet technical standards for all road users that take into account road safety

Greg Smith, Global Programme Director, iRAP said:

“Eliminating high-risk roads is critical to saving lives, particularly vulnerable road users, and reducing the vast economic and social burden on families impacted by road crashes. Good speed management and infrastructure such as 30km/h speeds in busy built-up areas, bicycle lanes, sidewalks, raised slow-speed pedestrian crossings and safety barriers are like vaccines – with them, we can eradicate road death and serious injury.

Through this partnership, we have an opportunity to maximize the life-saving impact of safe road infrastructure in projects around the world, supporting the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

North Lincolnshire Council partners with ubitricity to deliver a network of 35 on-street electric vehicle (EV) charge points across the region

London & Scunthorpe, UK – Thursday 23rd March 2023 - North Lincolnshire Council has appointed ubitricity, the UK’s leading charge point operator with a network of over 6,500 public charge points, to install a network of 35 on-street electric vehicle (EV) charge points in North Lincolnshire as part of the council’s drive towards A Green Future. Through this partnership, ubitricity, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell, will install and manage the public charging infrastructure, which will be made up of a combination of bollard and street lamppost chargers. The charge points will charge at a speed of up to 5kW and each take just under 2 hours to install . The council has asked residents to suggest charge point installation locations. Residents can register their interest here.

The roll-out is planned for residential communities where the majority of residents park on the street, allowing residents to easily charge hybrid and electric vehicles on the street where they live. A lack of accessible public EV charging points is a common barrier to EV adoption. A study commissioned by the Department for Transport published in March 2022 showed that the public wants to charge their vehicles at or near home , which can be difficult for the 8 million households in the UK don’t have access to off-street or private parking .

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Residents are now becoming more conscious of their carbon footprint, with more people converting to electric vehicles to contribute to improving emission levels. We are excited to implement this government-led initiative and enable easy access to charge points for residents. These new chargers will be installed where off-street parking is not available and will use the power supply from streetlights – now we need to know where residents would like to see them installed.”

In 2022 North Lincolnshire Council pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030. In 2023, the council unveiled its A Greener Future environmental programme, which laid out a roadmap to tackle its carbon footprint. One of the key aims of this plan, which also includes developing the city’s cycling and walking infrastructure, was to increase EV adoption in the area.
