Features include Free Crash Detection, Enhanced SOS and Tile integration

LONDON, UK - Life360, the family locator app and safety membership platform, has today announced a 64% growth in UK premium members over the last year, alongside a range of new features included in its free membership offering, rolling out over the next weeks. This includes further integration with Tile, the leading Bluetooth tracker brand it acquired in 2021.

Used by more than three million people in the UK and 50 million people worldwide, Life360 offers families peace of mind by allowing them to coordinate daily activities in real time, find important items, stay connected with those who matter most, and assist in emergencies.

Its existing features include; advanced intelligent location sharing between Circle (group) members through Place Alerts, which send a push notification when members leave or arrive at a designated location; Check-ins, which allow a user to send their location via push notification instantly to every member in their Circle and Family Driving Reports, which allow families to see how (and what) drivers are doing behind the wheel to encourage safe habits and more.

New free features unveiled include:

Free Crash Detection, which notifies Circle members and emergency contacts when Life360 detects they are in a car accident. If help is needed or the member doesn’t respond within a five-minute grace period, all Circle members and emergency contacts are notified via a text message with the user’s exact location. The app notification will also play a unique sound on the phone that will repeat for either 10 minutes or until the notification is acted upon. Of course, no one ever expects to be in a car crash, but the truth is that they happen more often than you might think and the time it takes to get help is critical.

Enhanced SOS, which means that after triggering an SOS Alert, a 10 second countdown will begin, after which Life360 will call and text all Circle members and emergency contacts for the Circle the alert was triggered in. Circle members will also receive a push notification. The phone call and text message will say where the user was when the SOS Alert was triggered. SOS alerts are available to all Life360 users, meaning parents of all ages, including new drivers and university students, can be reassured that if a loved one requires emergency assistance but can’t contact 999 because they are unable to talk on the phone, Life360 can help.

The Tile integration allows Life360 users’ entire "Circle" of family and friends to see the location of important items within their Life360 map. Life360 members will automatically be able to see Tile and Tile-enabled products' last reported location, so everyone in their Circle can easily locate shared items or help each other retrieve something that's been misplaced. Tiles can be attached to everyday essentials like bikes, keys, wallets, bags, and more.

David Rice, Life360’s International GM and CSO, said: “There’s a reason why one in eleven UK families already use Life360. The launch of these new services form part of our vision to expand our offering in the UK and to help better connect and protect the people and things that matter most.

“Members can now expand their Circle to include items using Tile and these services combined feed into our mission to deliver safety options for families and their things. So whether you’re retrieving keys lost down the back of the sofa with Tile, or sending your teen driver immediate help following Life360’s crash detection, the ability to confirm the people and things that matter most are safe and accounted for and takes the stress out of everyday life.”

As a top 25 iOS app in the UK, Life360 will be introducing more additional features to the UK market over the coming months.

ubitricity’s Rapid Growth Continues with 7,000 Electric Vehicle Charge Points Now Live Across the UK

Market leader ubitricity has successfully installed 7,000 public EV charge points across the UK

London, UK Wednesday 10th May 2023 – ubitricity, one of the UK’s leading charge point operators, has announced that it has successfully installed more than 7,000 EV charge points in the UK. This milestone comes off the back of a number of recent contract awards including the Cities of Westminster and Liverpool, North Lincolnshire and West Suffolk. These developments are all part of a wider effort to bring more publicly available EV charging to the millions of UK drivers without private parking and to help local authorities establish accessible charging networks quickly and efficiently using existing infrastructure.

ubitricity, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell, an electric vehicle charge point operator based in London, Berlin, and Paris, is one of the leading providers of innovative charging solutions for electric vehicles. Over the past six years, ubitricity has helped enable the transition to Evs in the UK by converting existing lampposts into charging points for electric vehicles in residential areas. ubitricity is also deploying fast and rapid charging points for councils and local authorities in easily accessible areas such as council car parks and leisure centres.

ubitricity’s charge points offer a convenient way of charging without the need for a private parking space. Its lamppost chargers also allow for the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure without additional street furniture. Ubitricity enables a fast, comprehensive expansion of charging infrastructure in public spaces, thereby supporting the adoption of electric vehicles.

“The UK EV market has seen rapid growth, and the provision of convenient and accessible charging is a key component in enabling the shift away from internal combustion engine vehicles,” said Toby Butler, Managing Director at ubitricity. “As the UK’s largest EV charge point operator, we’re proud of our role in helping ensure that EV owners can drive with confidence, knowing that a convenient, reliable charge will be close at hand. With more than 7,000 charge points now live, and our recent string of high-profile contract wins, we are proud to support local authorities’ roll out of EV charging infrastructure and assist them in meeting their goals to reduce emissions and improve their carbon footprint”.

ubitricity will also support local authorities with financing, through various funding schemes, to install more on-street chargers in towns and cities across the UK.

Cautionary Note

The companies in which Shell plc directly and indirectly owns investments are separate legal entities. In this press release “Shell”, “Shell Group” and “Group” are sometimes used for convenience where references are made to Shell plc and its subsidiaries in general. Likewise, the words “we”, “us” and “our” are also used to refer to Shell plc and its subsidiaries in general or to those who work for them. These terms are also used where no useful purpose is served by identifying the particular entity or entities. ‘‘Subsidiaries’’, “Shell subsidiaries” and “Shell companies” as used in this press release refer to entities over which Shell plc either directly or indirectly has control. Entities and unincorporated arrangements over which Shell has joint control are generally referred to as “joint ventures” and “joint operations”, respectively. “Joint-ventures” and “joint operations” are collectively referred to as “joint arrangements”. Entities over which Shell has significant influence but neither control nor joint control are referred to as “associates”. The term “Shell interest” is used for convenience to indicate the direct and/or indirect ownership interest held by Shell in an entity or unincorporated joint arrangement, after exclusion of all third-party interest.

Forward-Looking Statements
This press release contains forward-looking statements (within the meaning of the U.S. Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995) concerning the financial condition, results of operations and businesses of Shell. All statements other than statements of historical fact are, or may be deemed to be, forward-looking statements. Forward-looking statements are statements of future expectations that are based on management’s current expectations and assumptions and involve known and unknown risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results, performance, or events to differ materially from those expressed or implied in these statements. Forward-looking statements include, among other things, statements concerning the potential exposure of Shell to market risks and statements expressing management’s expectations, beliefs, estimates, forecasts, projections and assumptions. These forward-looking statements are identified by their use of terms and phrases such as “aim”, “ambition”, ‘‘anticipate’’, ‘‘believe’’, ‘‘could’’, ‘‘estimate’’, ‘‘expect’’, ‘‘goals’’, ‘‘intend’’, ‘‘may’’, “milestones”, ‘‘objectives’’, ‘‘outlook’’, ‘‘plan’’, ‘‘probably’’, ‘‘project’’, ‘‘risks’’, “schedule”, ‘‘seek’’, ‘‘should’’, ‘‘target’’, ‘‘will’’ and similar terms and phrases. There are a number of factors that could affect the future operations of Shell and could cause those results to differ materially from those expressed in the forward-looking statements included in this press release, including (without limitation): (a) price fluctuations in crude oil and natural gas; (b) changes in demand for Shell’s products; (c) currency fluctuations; (d) drilling and production results; (e) reserves estimates; (f) loss of market share and industry competition; (g) environmental and physical risks; (h) risks associated with the identification of suitable potential acquisition properties and targets, and successful negotiation and completion of such transactions; (i) the risk of doing business in developing countries and countries subject to international sanctions; (j) legislative, judicial, fiscal and regulatory developments including regulatory measures addressing climate change; (k) economic and financial market conditions in various countries and regions; (l) political risks, including the risks of expropriation and renegotiation of the terms of contracts with governmental entities, delays or advancements in the approval of projects and delays in the reimbursement for shared costs; (m) risks associated with the impact of pandemics, such as the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak; and (n) changes in trading conditions. No assurance is provided that future dividend payments will match or exceed previous dividend payments. All forward-looking statements contained in this press release are expressly qualified in their entirety by the cautionary statements contained or referred to in this section. Readers should not place undue reliance on forward-looking statements. Additional risk factors that may affect future results are contained in Shell plc’s Form 20-F for the year ended December 31, 2022 (available at www.shell.com/investor and www.sec.gov). These risk factors also expressly qualify all forward-looking statements contained in this press release and should be considered by the reader. Each forward-looking statement speaks only as of the date of this press release, 10.05.2023. Neither Shell plc nor any of its subsidiaries undertake any obligation to publicly update or revise any forward-looking statement as a result of new information, future events or other information. In light of these risks, results could differ materially from those stated, implied or inferred from the forward-looking statements contained in this press release.

Shell’s net carbon intensity
Also, in this press release we may refer to Shell’s “Net Carbon Intensity”, which include Shell’s carbon emissions from the production of our energy products, our suppliers’ carbon emissions in supplying energy for that production and our customers’ carbon emissions associated with their use of the energy products we sell. Shell only controls its own emissions. The use of the term Shell’s “Net Carbon Intensity” is for convenience only and not intended to suggest these emissions are those of Shell plc or its subsidiaries.

Shell’s net-Zero Emissions Target
Shell’s operating plan, outlook and budgets are forecasted for a ten-year period and are updated every year. They reflect the current economic environment and what we can reasonably expect to see over the next ten years. Accordingly, they reflect our Scope 1, Scope 2 and Net Carbon Intensity (NCI) targets over the next ten years. However, Shell’s operating plans cannot reflect our 2050 net-zero emissions target and 2035 NCI target, as these targets are currently outside our planning period. In the future, as society moves towards net-zero emissions, we expect Shell’s operating plans to reflect this movement. However, if society is not net zero in 2050, as of today, there would be significant risk that Shell may not meet this target.

Forward Looking Non-GAAP measures
This press release may contain certain forward-looking non-GAAP measures such as cash capital expenditure and divestments. We are unable to provide a reconciliation of these forward-looking Non-GAAP measures to the most comparable GAAP financial measures because certain information needed to reconcile those Non-GAAP measures to the most comparable GAAP financial measures is dependent on future events some of which are outside the control of Shell, such as oil and gas prices, interest rates and exchange rates. Moreover, estimating such GAAP measures with the required precision necessary to provide a meaningful reconciliation is extremely difficult and could not be accomplished without unreasonable effort. Non-GAAP measures in respect of future periods which cannot be reconciled to the most comparable GAAP financial measure are calculated in a manner which is consistent with the accounting policies applied in Shell plc’s consolidated financial statements.

UNOPS and the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) will work together to enhance support of the road safety sector by improving the safety of road infrastructure aligned to UN Global Targets for road safety.

- UNOPS and iRAP have established a partnership to enhance support for the road sector in planning, designing and building safer roads.

- The partnership aims to improve road infrastructure safety and reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on roads worldwide by implementing iRAP’s globally recognised methodology, tools and training to identify high-risk road sections, inform evidence-based investment in safety upgrades and build road safety capacity in countries.

- By collaborating on advocacy, capacity-building, knowledge sharing, and technical assistance, the partnership aims to support countries in achieving Global Road Safety Performance Targets and halving road deaths and injuries by 2030.

UNOPS and the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) signed the agreement today in Manila, Philippines, in the presence of Mr. Jean Todt, United Nations Special Envoy on Road Safety and former President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), as part of the Road Safety Initiative.

The agreement will allow UNOPS and iRAP to work together in outreach and advocacy to improve global road safety, capacity-building activities, sharing and transfer of knowledge and technical assistance on projects and project implementation, among others.

Every year, around 1.23 million people are killed and nearly 50 million are injured on roadways around the world. According to the World Health Organization, there is no greater threat to the lives of people between 5 to 29 years old.

The UN has called for greater global efforts to reduce traffic deaths and injuries by half by 2030. “One of the best ways to remember and honour the victims is by doing our part to make roads safer around the world”, said UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, in his last message to mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, observed annually on 20 November.

In addition, the agreement will augment the mutual capacity and outreach of both organizations, allowing them to support countries towards a more comprehensive and robust road safety management and implementation approach and implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. In doing so, the agreement will support countries in achieving Global Road Safety Performance Targets 3 and 4:
Target 3 – By 2030, all new roads achieve technical standards for all road users that take into account road safety or meet a three-star rating or better
Target 4 – By 2030, more than 75% of travel on existing roads is on roads that meet technical standards for all road users that take into account road safety

Greg Smith, Global Programme Director, iRAP said:

“Eliminating high-risk roads is critical to saving lives, particularly vulnerable road users, and reducing the vast economic and social burden on families impacted by road crashes. Good speed management and infrastructure such as 30km/h speeds in busy built-up areas, bicycle lanes, sidewalks, raised slow-speed pedestrian crossings and safety barriers are like vaccines – with them, we can eradicate road death and serious injury.

Through this partnership, we have an opportunity to maximize the life-saving impact of safe road infrastructure in projects around the world, supporting the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Steven Crosskey, Director of Infrastructure and Project Management Group, UNOPS said:

“Safer road infrastructure will save lives and reduce the suffering caused by serious injuries. UNOPS has valuable expertise to help governments to increase road safety and this partnership with iRAP will enhance knowledge sharing and enable cooperation towards common road safety goals.

UNOPS is ready to get to work on this vital initiative and we are confident that our partnership will, quite literally, build the roads to a better future. ”
About the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP)
iRAP is a registered charity with a vision for a world free of high-risk roads, influencing road infrastructure safety in more than 170 countries. iRAP and its partners work with governments, development banks, mobility clubs, industry, research organisations, road safety NGOs, the United Nations and research organisations to provide evidence-based tools, training and support to help them make their roads safe. iRAP’s road safety Star Rating Methodology is free to use and provides a simple and objective measure of the level of safety which is ‘built-in’ to the road for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians. A 1-star road is the least safe and a 5-star road is the safest. iRAP works with partners to: inspect high-risk roads and develop Star Ratings, Risk Maps and Safer Roads Investment Plans; provide training, tools, and support that will build and sustain national, regional, and local capability; and track road safety performance so that funding agencies can assess the life-saving and economic benefits of their investments. iRAP and its partners have influenced the safety of over USD$95 billion of infrastructure investment, Star Rated over 1.4 million kilometres of roads and designs, as well as road locations around 1,028 schools, mapped crash risk across 1.7 million kilometres of roads and trained nearly 60,000 people globally.

North Lincolnshire Council partners with ubitricity to deliver a network of 35 on-street electric vehicle (EV) charge points across the region

London & Scunthorpe, UK – Thursday 23rd March 2023 - North Lincolnshire Council has appointed ubitricity, the UK’s leading charge point operator with a network of over 6,500 public charge points, to install a network of 35 on-street electric vehicle (EV) charge points in North Lincolnshire as part of the council’s drive towards A Green Future. Through this partnership, ubitricity, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell, will install and manage the public charging infrastructure, which will be made up of a combination of bollard and street lamppost chargers. The charge points will charge at a speed of up to 5kW and each take just under 2 hours to install . The council has asked residents to suggest charge point installation locations. Residents can register their interest here.

The roll-out is planned for residential communities where the majority of residents park on the street, allowing residents to easily charge hybrid and electric vehicles on the street where they live. A lack of accessible public EV charging points is a common barrier to EV adoption. A study commissioned by the Department for Transport published in March 2022 showed that the public wants to charge their vehicles at or near home , which can be difficult for the 8 million households in the UK don’t have access to off-street or private parking .

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Residents are now becoming more conscious of their carbon footprint, with more people converting to electric vehicles to contribute to improving emission levels. We are excited to implement this government-led initiative and enable easy access to charge points for residents. These new chargers will be installed where off-street parking is not available and will use the power supply from streetlights – now we need to know where residents would like to see them installed.”

In 2022 North Lincolnshire Council pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030. In 2023, the council unveiled its A Greener Future environmental programme, which laid out a roadmap to tackle its carbon footprint. One of the key aims of this plan, which also includes developing the city’s cycling and walking infrastructure, was to increase EV adoption in the area.

“The momentum of EV infrastructure deployments across the UK continues to build, with more and more councils and local authorities helping residents to make the shift to greener modes of transport,” said Toby Butler, UK Managing Director of ubitricity. “We’re delighted to have added North Lincolnshire Council to our growing list of council partners, paving the way for residents who want to switch to EV.”

Each forward-looking statement speaks only as of the date of this press release, 23/03/2023 Neither Shell plc nor any of its subsidiaries undertake any obligation to publicly update or revise any forward-looking statement as a result of new information, future events or other information.

Council signs deal that will see 100 new fast, rapid and lamppost public EV charge points installed on council owned land in 2023

London, UK & Bury St Edmunds 15th March 2023 – West Suffolk Council announced that it has appointed ubitricity, the leading charge point operator in the UK with a network of over 6,500 public charge points, to roll out a network of 100 public electric vehicle (EV) charge points. Under the deal, ubitricity, a wholly owned Shell subsidiary, will install and maintain the public charging infrastructure, meaning motorists will be able to use a new network of 5kW, 7kW, 50kW and 150kW chargers and pay by debit or credit card or by using the Shell Recharge app. West Suffolk Council will roll out a programme later in 2023 confirming the planned locations for the charge points, which will be chosen for EV driver convenience, and include town centres, leisure centres, country parks and car parks.

Figures published in January 2023 by the Department for Transport show that West Suffolk is already in the top 29 percent of councils nationally for public charging points for EVs, both in total number of devices, and for devices per 100,000 residents. Having declared environment and climate change emergencies, West Suffolk Council is working towards being carbon net zero by 2030. It is also a key contributor to the Suffolk Climate Emergency Plan. In December 2022, the council published its EV Infrastructure Position Statement, detailing how it will support delivery of EV charging infrastructure. Partnerships such as the one with ubitricity are seen as key to this work and to developing the EV charging infrastructure yet further.

Cllr Andy Drummond, Cabinet member for Regulatory and Environment at West Suffolk Council said:
“This sees a step change in availability of public charging points ahead of the change from fossil fuel vehicles in 2030. I welcome the collaboration with ubitricity and am delighted that the energy motorists are to be supplied is from the same company that buys the energy we generate from our council-owned solar farm, and at competitive rates. In December we published a position statement on EV charging point infrastructure and to see this being delivered so quickly shows the pace we are working at to be carbon net zero by 2030.”

Toby Butler, UK Managing Director at ubitricity said:
“West Suffolk council is making incredible leaps when it comes to EV charge point infrastructure, delivering a blueprint for other local authorities to follow. By expanding their network to provide convenient charging facilities for both residents and businesses, they are making the transition to EV much more accessible and helping give drivers the confidence to make the switch. We are thrilled to be working with West Suffolk to help them set a standard for other councils to follow.”

Drax Group Deploys Solace to Power Up the UK’s Electric Vehicle Drive

London (February 23, 2023) – Solace, the leading enabler of event-driven architecture (EDA) for real-time enterprises, announced today renewable energy company Drax Group has deployed Solace event streaming and management technology to underpin its industry-leading Electric Vehicle (EV) solutions, powered by renewable energy. With 400,000 EVs in the UK, this will affect a large proportion of EV drivers and help the UK reach its goal of becoming net-zero by 2050.

Supply chain disruptions are bringing to the fore the importance of balancing power, demand and supply, especially in the wake of wild energy price fluctuations. To maximize energy efficiency, providers and consumers both demand real-time updates of commodity prices, which ultimately influence purchasing decisions.
Event-driven architecture is the basis of Ofgem’s mandate to enable half-hour energy settlements for businesses and consumers (MHHS), and Elexon, who set the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) in Great Britain. To generate and deliver renewable power in the most efficient way and remain compliant with the programme, energy providers need real-time, event-driven data. Drax has chosen Solace, as the market-leading enabler of EDA in the UK energy sector, to orchestrate real-time information sharing with the MHHS Data Integration Platform.
This means the use of EDA will benefit EV users and producers by effectively turning electric vehicles into de facto storage batteries, ready to be used at home in lieu of peak energy price consumption levels, or even sold back to the grid.
Solace PubSub+ Platform is the first purpose-built EDA platform available today that can support the real-time movement of data between vehicles, charging points, energy sources and energy suppliers. The interoperability of the platform allows multiple technologies and systems to access data in real time, empowering users to make energy usage more efficient and agile.
“Getting more electric vehicles on the road is key to decarbonising the UK. At Drax, our EV experts can help fleet managers by doing the hard work for them when it comes to looking at the data to understand which EV solutions would benefit their business,” said Adam Hall, Energy Services Director, Drax. “Event-driven architecture is the key to making energy production and consumption resource-effective and therefore limit waste and make life easier for UK homes and businesses.’’
The real-time nature of EDA allows for the most cost-effective energy source to be consumed at a specific point in time, which will, in turn, encourage new and disruptive services.
“The efforts to make the energy supply chain more efficient are commendable, not only for the environmental benefits but for the energy savings they bring to consumers and producers alike,” said David Mitchell, Regional VP, United Kingdom & Ireland, Solace. “The UK in particular is leading the effort to ensure energy efficiency, as the Ofgem’s MHHS programme confirms. Drax again proves itself to be a trusted provider with this initiative, as it will allow EV owners to make the best use of electricity.”

Case in point - Drax’s first EV customer, SES Water, made an initial investment in 16 new charging points and replaced 10 of its 120 strong fleet of diesel vans with electric vehicles. This small step is saving SES Water an estimated 43 tonnes of CO2 per year.

About Drax
Drax Group’s purpose is to enable a zero carbon, lower cost energy future and in 2019 announced a world-leading ambition to be carbon negative by 2030, using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology. Drax’s around 3,000 employees operate across three principal areas of activity – electricity generation, electricity sales to business customers and compressed wood pellet production and supply to third parties. For more information visit www.drax.com

Power generation:
Drax owns and operates a portfolio of renewable electricity generation assets in England and Scotland. The assets include the UK’s largest power station, based at Selby, North Yorkshire, which supplies five percent of the country’s electricity needs. Having converted Drax Power Station to use sustainable biomass instead of coal it has become the UK’s biggest renewable power generator and the largest decarbonisation project in Europe. It is also where Drax is piloting the groundbreaking negative emissions technology BECCS within its CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage) Incubation Area. Its pumped storage, hydro and energy from waste assets in Scotland include Cruachan Power Station – a flexible pumped storage facility within the hollowed-out mountain Ben Cruachan. The Group also aims to build on its BECCS innovation at Drax Power Station with a target to deliver 4 million tonnes of negative CO2 emissions each year from new-build BECCS outside of the UK by 2030 and is currently developing models for North American and European markets.

Pellet production and supply:
The Group has 19 operational pellet plants and developments with nameplate production capacity of around 5 million tonnes a year. Drax is targeting 8 million tonnes of production capacity by 2030, which will require the development of over 3 million tonnes of new biomass pellet production capacity. The pellets are produced using materials sourced from sustainably managed working forests and are supplied to third party customers in Europe and Asia for the generation of renewable power. Drax’s pellet plants supply biomass used at its own power station in North Yorkshire, England to generate flexible, renewable power for the UK’s homes and businesses, and also to customers in Europe and Asia.

As icy cold snaps make for challenging conditions on the roads, a High Street opticians is urging people to ‘get themselves seen’ after more than a quarter of customers admitted they are choosing to drive less during the winter months.
The main reasons given for not getting behind the wheel is down to glare of oncoming headlights (69 per cent), closely followed by icy roads (66 per cent) and driving in snow (63 per cent).
The straw poll of 700 customers carried out by Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care also showed that one in six are scared of driving in the dark, with 60 per cent not aware of the availability of lenses designed to reduce headlights dazzle and improve vision in low light and poor weather conditions.
Almost all of those surveyed (91 per cent) believed that eye tests for drivers should be a statutory requirement, with 53 per cent believing the test should be completed annually.
Scrivens’ professional services and training manager and qualified optometrist, Sonal Lad, said: “Drivers need optimum vision for their own safety and the safety of other road users, and this is particularly true in the challenging winter months.
“It is understandable that some people lose confidence during winter, but we would urge anyone to get themselves seen by an optician, so they don’t have to avoid going places and seeing people.”

Cambridge, UK: FocalPoint, the UK software company which provides next generation positioning solutions for mobiles, wearables and vehicles, has announced a strategic investment from GM Ventures, the venture capital arm of General Motors (NYSE: GM), and a collaboration with GM to explore the application of next generation GPS technologies to the automotive market.

FocalPoint’s SupercorrelationTM technology addresses the critical issue of GPS inaccuracies from current receivers in cities, bringing navigation positioning better in line with modern customer and business demands. The collaboration with GM will focus on possible application of the technology in future vehicles, including potential enhancements and expansion of its Super Cruise advanced hands-free driving assistance technology and its upcoming Ultra Cruise advanced driver assistance system in the coming years.

Overview

● Technology revolutionizes the accuracy and security of GPS and other global navigation satellite systems in dense urban areas
● Companies to collaborate on potential application of SupercorrelationTM in EVs and AVs
● Technology redefines the state of the art for safety and reliability of positioning

“FocalPoint’s Supercorrelation technology can make navigation and positioning more precise, especially in dense urban environments, which we believe can have significant benefits for the ongoing growth and capability of ADAS and AV systems,” said Scott Pomerantz, FocalPoint CEO. “We’re delighted to expand our advanced technology into the automotive sector with GM, a leader in advanced driver assistance systems.”

“We’re constantly researching technologies to support and enhance the growth and performance of our vehicles, both within our internal research and development operations and through collaborations with innovators beyond our company,” said Kent Helfrich, President, GM Ventures. “This collaboration with FocalPoint targets a specific aspect of the ongoing expansion of Super Cruise and Ultra Cruise going forward.”

FocalPoint was founded to address the critical issue of GPS inaccuracies of current receivers and bring navigation and positioning better in line with the demands of businesses and individuals in the 21st century.

This latest investment follows the announcement in September of a Series C funding round of £23m, led by Molten Ventures and Gresham House Ventures. FocalPoint has also secured funding from the European Space Agency’s NAVISP programme to develop a live demonstration and rapid prototyping system to accelerate FocalPoint’s activities in the automotive and mobile sector.

Having already licensed some of its technologies to u-blox (SWX:UBXN), the leading European manufacturer of wireless communication and positioning technologies, for use in their GNSS receivers, this collaboration signifies the first steps into the booming automotive market.

Currently, over a trillion dollars of the US economy and over 800 billion euros of the European economy depend on positioning and timing systems.

Solving the critical issue of GPS inaccuracy and spoofing FocalPoint’s groundbreaking SupercorrelationTM technology enables a new class of satellite positioning receiver that can measure the directions of the incoming signals, allowing them to ignore reflected signals and fake ‘spoofed’ signals, making them more accurate in cities and more resilient against spoofing attacks.

Spoofing is used by criminal networks, maritime pirates, and fraudsters to broadcast fake satellite signals and confuse the receiver. This is a critical threat to business and consumers, particularly as the criminals become more sophisticated and the cost of spoofing technology comes down.

FocalPoint’s unique technology can instantly detect fake signals as spoofers, ignore those signals, and pinpoint where in the physical environment the signal is coming from. It is the only consumer-grade product in the market capable of these unique performance characteristics.

“This is a major milestone for FocalPoint as we work with General Motors to explore the deployment of our technologies in EVs and AVs. Accurate positioning for autonomous cars and driver assistance platforms is an opportunity for the industry and we are proud to be providing a much-needed solution,” commented Ramsey Faragher, FocalPoint Founder, President and CTO.

In the last year, FocalPoint has almost doubled its headcount across its offices spanning the UK and US and brought in former Broadcom SVP Scott Pomerantz as its new Chief Executive Officer alongside other senior executives with deep experience in building and scaling technology firms.

Notes for Editors
● Supercorrelation™ is a patented, chipset-level software product developed by FocalPoint for mobiles, wearables, and vehicles - increasing the positioning accuracy in urban environments by a factor of 10. It requires no extra hardware or infrastructure and is therefore a cost efficient and environmentally friendly option by reducing the requirement for high cost antennas and reducing power consumption.
● GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System - a blanket term to describe systems that include GPS, Galileo, BeiDou, Glonass.
● Developed and launched by the US military in the 1980s, GPS became fully operational in 1993.
● Other nations have launched similar systems: Russia’s GLONASS, China’s BeiDou and Europe’s Galileo, along with smaller regional services.
● 1.8bn GPS chipsets were shipped in 2019, this is expected to grow to 2.8bn by 2029, with the majority of growth coming from receivers for autonomy, road and drone (source).
● A US Government study in 2019 estimated the economic benefits of the US Global Positioning System at $1.4 trillion.
● GNSS technology touches almost every part of today’s interconnected world and economy. A 2017 US government study estimated that the loss of GPS service would average a $1 billion per-day impact to the nation (reference).
● Inaccurate satellite positioning in cities is caused by obscured, reflected and weak satellite signals due to surrounding buildings, resulting in positioning and timing errors on GPS and other GNSS-dependent devices.

News in brief:
•	Getac Electronic Vehicle Inspection Solution and technical expertise are helping the BTCC achieve its ambitious digital transformation goals for the 2022 season
•	Digitising key race day processes has improved transparency and communication between teams and officials, whilst shortening crucial decision making times
•	The result is even tighter, more exciting racing for millions of BTCC fans around the world

Telford, UK, 27 September 2022: Getac has worked closely with the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) to digitise key race day operations, including safety and compliance checks, team communications, and vehicle diagnostics, in the latest phase of its ongoing strategic technology partnership.

Getac has collaborated with the BTCC for over three years and is now its official technology partner. For the 2022 season, Getac has supplied the BTCC with its Electronic Vehicle Inspection Solution, which includes the UX10 fully rugged tablets and Getac Vehicle Inspection Software, to digitise the key scrutineering processes that take place each race. Doing so has significantly improved transparency between teams and officials, whilst crucially shortening operational and decision making times.

Effective digitisation central to BTCC’s future plans
Prior to partnering with Getac, BTCC staff primarily relied on paper forms and consumer grade IT devices, which created major challenges before, during and after each race weekend. Not only were paper forms time consuming to complete and difficult to archive correctly, but the relative fragility and poor battery life of consumer grade devices often led to unanticipated issues and delays. As the BTCC moved from traditional petrol-powered engines to petrol/electric hybridization for the 2022 season, it knew a fully digitised approach to race day officiating and analysis was the only way to ensure smooth, efficient and seamless operations going forward.

Digitally transforming race operations
Getac’s solution offers outstanding performance and reliability in every aspect of operations, for both officials and race teams.

For race officials, the Getac UX10 makes data entry quick and easy. Its fully rugged design also means it can be used in race control or trackside, for everything from lap timing and regulation compliance to video reviews and post-race car inspections, with complete peace of mind.

The BTCC technical team use Getac’s Electronic Vehicle Inspection Solution to check the safety and compliance of competing vehicles digitally, with the data immediately made available to all relevant parties. Once each race is over, officials can then look at key data trends from the weekend and use the information to improve team and driver experiences at future events.

Race teams can also use Getac’s Electronic Vehicle Inspection Solution to capture and review racing data in real-time, take/transmit photos and video evidence, and pull diagnostic information directly from the cars pre/post-race for performance analysis purposes. Additionally, teams can monitor engine and tyre performance, using data provided by BTCC partners Cosworth and Goodyear, directly on their Getac devices.

The extensive connectivity options also mean teams can get accurate timing and race information from wherever they are around the track, rather than having to continuously return to their technical trucks or garage during each race.

“Our partnership with Getac over the past three years has helped us realise that paper-based processes no longer have a place in fast-paced race environments,” says Alan Gow, Chief Executive of the BTCC. “Thanks to Getac’s digital solution, we can bring real-time control, visibility and efficiency to every aspect of our race day operations, ensuring audiences everywhere get the fantastic spectacle they have come to expect.”

“In competitive motorsports, the smallest detail can be the difference between winning and losing,” says Russell Younghusband, Global Automotive Director, Getac. “We’re proud to help the BTCC achieve its digital transformation goals through this partnership, putting a wealth of information at the fingertips of both race officials and teams alike, and helping deliver incredibly exciting racing at every BTCC venue throughout the season.”

The next BTCC race weekend will take place at Brands Hatch GP, from 08-09 October 2022. For more information, please visit www.btcc.net

As Britain’s beach resorts prepare to pack away their deckchairs and umbrellas for another year – organisers of the UK’s highly acclaimed new roadtrip route are just getting into gear for their peak season.
The glorious South West 660 drive around the coast of the southwest peninsular is considered to be at its best in the coming autumn months.

The spectacular route around the coast of Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and Somerset has been a massive success with visitors, travelwriters and local businesses since it launched earlier this spring.

Locals say that the amazing 660-mile coastal adventure is even better from September onwards. Visitors can do it all as a once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list treat – or enjoy one of the 12 sections of around 50 miles each.

Here are ten great reasons to take a South West 660 roadtrip break this autumn:

1
Just look at those trees!
Autumn colours are twice as good when reflected in the waters of estuaries like the Helford in Cornwall or Dart in Devon.
In Somerset it’s the best time to explore ancient woods where Exmoor meets the sea at beautiful points along the South West 660 route, like Dunster and Porlock.
The summer holiday crowds have gone so it’s a great time to wander round the southwest’s sub-tropical coastal gardens too, like those at Abbotsbury in Dorset or Trebor or Trebah and Heligan in Cornwall.
Stay at Kentisbury Grange (www.kentisburygrange.com) set among trees on the edge of Exmoor for some great autumnal walks.

2
Party with the locals
After the summer holiday rush is over the locals have time to join in a glorious sequence of autumn events across the region.
Find food events ranging from Clovelly’s ‘Crab Feast’ and Redruth’s Pasty Festival to The Honey Fair on Bodmin Moor and Seafood Festival in Weymouth. And expect to find cider festivals, demonstrations and tastings all over the westcountry around harvest time.
You might stumble upon annual surprises like the Antiques Fair in the shadow of Dunster Castle, Swanage’s beachside Folk Festival or the huge Taste East Devon Festival of Food in September too. And look out for regular autumn favourites like Bridport Hat Festival, the Black Bream Fishing Festival at Lyme Regis and Port Isaac Book Festival.
Why not stay at Moonfleet Manor (www.moonfleetmanorhotel.co.uk) overlooking the sea just outside Weymouth for the Seafood Festival?

3
Running Free
Let your dogs enjoy the seaside. They are generally allowed on all beaches in the region from September, many of the South West 660’s hotel partners are very dog friendly too. Of course there are plenty of all-year dog-friendly beaches – from the enormous Northam Burrows in North Devon and the little-known Porlock and Bossington Beach in Somerset to the gigantic 18-mile Chesil Beach in Dorset.
At some of the resort beaches like Exmouth and Woolacombe more and more of the beach is open to dog walkers as autumn arrives. At Cornwall’s Perranporth dogs are allowed from the end of August and at protected beaches like Minehead and Falmouth’s Swanpool from the end of September.
The harbourside Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth (www.greenbank-hotel.co.uk) is perfect for an autumnal dog-friendly break along the South West 660.

And 4
So are horses!
You can have a romantic autumn canter through the waves thanks to riding stables at many spots around the coast like Gwithian in Cornwall, Putsborough in Devon and Studland in Dorset.
Stay at The Pig on the beach, Studland in Dorset (www.thepighotel.com/on-the-beach/) – the nearby stables offer rides along the four-mile sandy beach.

5
Time for a walk
The beaches are almost empty and the breeze is fresher - you won’t be able to resist stopping for a coast walk at fantastic scenic stretches of the South West 660 like Lulworth in Dorset, Branscombe in Devon, Roseland in Cornwall and Culbone in Somerset.
Why not park at the remote Hunters Inn on Exmoor and walk down the National Trust’s Heddon Valley to the sea? Or wrap up warm for a bracing cliffwalk to the Lizard Point in Cornwall (calling in at the award-winning Ann’s Pasty Shop on the way back!).
Stay at the Masons Arms, Branscombe, Devon, (https://masonsarms.co.uk) for some great South West Coast Path walking.

6
Into the Wild
Right along the South West 660 route autumn means less people… but more wildlife.
It’s a lovely time to see formations of migrating birds from rocky headlands, go rockpooling on deserted beaches and join guided trips to see the annual deer rutting displays. (Try Arlington in North Devon, Powderham in South Devon, Holnicote in Somerset, Redrice Reserve in Cornwall and Powerstock in Dorset).
It’s the perfect time to take red squirrel tours on Dorset’s Brownsea Island and spot the flocks of wildfowl arrive in the Exe or Torridge Estuaries. Wonder at a mesmerising autumn starling murmuration at dawn or dusk – try the Exe Estuary or Burgh Island in Devon or Marazion or Hayle in Cornwall.
And even when you’re driving along the quiet roads used in the South West 660 route, keep your eye out for badgers, bats, hawks, owls and pheasants – they’re all busily preparing for winter.
Stay at the Marazion Hotel, Marazion, Cornwall (https://marazionhotel.co.uk) overlooking Mount’s Bay for spotting wildlife ranging from whales to rare seabirds.

7
Britain’s Most Spectacular Bonfire Party
Visit the historic market town of Ottery St Mary in East Devon for a bonfire night like no other. After dark, and sometimes fuelled with mulled cider, locals traditionally run through the crowded streets carrying flaming barrels of tar on November 5th. Stand well back – but have smartphones at the ready.
Autumn is also the season for Somerset’s spectacular carnival processions – the biggest and best is at Bridgwater on November 5th.
Stay at Mazzard Farm (www.mazzardfarm.com) for easy access to Ottery’s spectacular Tar Barrel night.

8
The Season of Mellow Fruitfulness
Autumn’s a lovely time to just relax and enjoy the westcountry’s mellowest sights. Gaze into long sunsets across the Atlantic, picnic among hills of bracken and gorse turning crunchy and orange or visit orchards laden with ripe apples. You’ll be able to find mushrooms on grassy clifftops, forage in hedgerows bulging with berries and watch autumn’s bigger waves crash onto sandy surf beaches.
The roads and beaches are quiet but autumn visitors are amazed to find the southwest’s seas are still often warm enough for swimming. Southwest water temperatures in September and October are similar to July.
Nevertheless, it’s the season to consider tucking into heartier local dishes, maybe homemade soup and crusty bread by a crackling pub fire or fish and chips sitting on a harbour wall as darkness falls.
Stay at one of the Original Cottages’ lovely characterful properties to explore the very best of the Dorset and Devon food scene (www.originalcottages.co.uk).

9
Help the local hospitality scene
The South West 660 route has been carefully researched and planned to lead you along the best roads, hugging one of the world’s great coastlines. It passes scores of pretty coves, picturesque fishing villages and romantic valleys.
You’ll find that autumn’s less crowded coastal communities will be more welcoming. You won’t struggle to find a parking spot. Accommodation is more plentiful – and more affordable – and places to eat won’t all be booked up. The bank holiday traffic jams are forgotten and local businesses will be pleased to see you – they’re grateful for your custom to extend their season.
Why not stay at Dart Marina in Dartmouth as the waterside at Dartmouth becomes less crowded in autumn (www.dartmarina.com).

10
Enjoy the drive
Follow the extraordinary varied shores of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset and there’s a new sight round every headland.
Tackling the South West 660 is about slow travel. Autumn’s quiet roads give you the chance to relax and enjoy the journey itself. Drive carefully but remind yourself of the lovely old-fashioned thrill of ‘going for a drive’. Of course it helps when you’ve got a great view out the window... And on the South West 660 there are world-class views all the way.
It’s easy to find high quality coastal inns right around the coast of the westcountry (www.staustellbrewery.co.uk/south-west-660).
